1.       SAUDI ARABIA TO HOST 2034 FIFA WORLD CUP

·         The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) announced that Saudi Arabia as the host for the Men’s World Cup 2034 during the Extraordinary FIFA Congress held in Zurich Switzerland .

·         This significant milestone marks the kingdom’s global sports ambitions under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Vision 2030 initiative.

·         This is the first time Saudi Arabia will host the FIFA Men’s World Cup.

·         FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

·         FIFA also announced that Spain, Portugal and Morocco will co-host the 24th men’s World Cup in 2030 with one-off matches in three South American countries.

·         For its centenary celebrations, the first three matches of the 2030 World Cup will be held in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay.

 

2.       ARJUN ERIGAISI  REACH 2800 ELO RATING

·         Grandmaster (GM) Arjun Erigaisi became the second Indian and 16th player worldwide to reach the gold-standard ELO rating of 2800, after legendary Viswanathan Anand.

·         Arjun now has 2801 rating points and is currently ranked No. 4 in the world, just below Hikaru Nakamura (2802) of the United State of America (USA).

·         Norwegian Magnus Carlsen continued to be at the top spot with 2831 ratings, followed by Fabiano Caruana (2805) of the USA.

·         Earlier this year, he won both team gold and individual gold medals in the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary.

 


3.       U-19 MEN’S ASIA CUP 2024

·         Bangladesh defeated India in the finals by 59 runs to win their 2nd consecutive Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Under (U)-19 Men’s Asia Cup title.

·         The Final held at Dubai International Cricket StadiumDubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

·         The 11th edition of the tournament was held in Sharjah and Dubai, UAE.

·         The Indian team was captained by Mohamed Amaan while the team of Bangladesh was captained by Azizul Hakim

·         8 nations participated in this competition, of 15 matches including the group stages and knockouts.

·         The participants included 5 Asian full members of the International Cricket Council (ICC) —India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh as well as the three associate members—UAE, Japan, and Nepal who were selected through regional competitions.

·         Player of the Tournament- Iqbal Hasan Emon (Bangladesh) (13 wickets)

 

4.       F1 ABU DHABI GP

·         British racer Lando Norris of McLaren (25 points) has won the season-ending Formula 1 (F1) Abu Dhabi Grand Prix (GP) 2024 which was held at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi

·         Carlos Sainz (Spain) (18 points) and Charles Leclerc (Monaco) (15 points) of Ferrari secured 2nd and 3rd spot

 

5.       KIWG 2025 TO BE HELD IN LADAKH AND J&K

·         Union Minister Mansukh MandaviyaMinistry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) announced that the 5th edition of the Khelo India Winter Games (KIWG) 2025 will take place  in Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh and UT of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K).

·         The KIWG will kick off the Khelo India season, with the Youth and Para Games in Bihar in April 2025 and the University Games later in the year.

·         TheKhelo India Winter Games (KIWG) started in 2020. It is an initiative under the Khelo India program, aimed at promoting winter sports in India.

 

6.       D GUKESH BECOMES YOUNGEST WORLD CHAMPION

·         Indian grandmaster Gukesh Dommaraju (D. Gukesh) from Chennai defeated China’s Ding Liren in the 14th and final round to win the World Chess Championship 2024 that was held in Singapore.

·         With this win, D.Gukesh has become the 18th and the youngest world champion at the age of  18 years 8 months 14 days till date.

·         Before Gukesh, Garry Kasparov (Russia) was crowned as the world champion in 1985 when he was 22 years, six months and 27 days old.

·         D.Gukesh was awarded with a prize money Rs.11.45 crore(USD 1.35 million) by the International Chess Federation (FIDE).

·         He will also be awarded with Rs.5 crore by the TN government.

·         Gukesh is the 2nd grandmaster from India to hold the world title.

·         Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand was the unbeaten world champion for 6 years starting in 2007.

·         In the 45thChess Olympiad held in Budapest in 2024, he won both the team and individual gold.

·         As of December 2024, he has a global rank of 5 with a FIDE rating of 2783.

·         The World Chess Championship is played to determine the world champion in chess and has been conducted by International Chess Federation (FIDE) since 1948.

·         The first event was held in 1886 match between Wilhelm Steinitz and Johannes Zukertort wherein Steinitz became the first world champion.

 

7.       SYED MUSHTAQ ALI TROPHY 2024

·         Mumbai defeated Madhya Pradesh (MP) by 5 wickets to win the 17th edition of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2024.

·         The Cricket tournament final was held at the Mangalam Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

·         This was Mumbai’s 2nd title at the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

·         The team of Mumbai was captained by Shreyas Iyer while the team of MP was captained by Rajat Patidar.

·         The winning team Mumbai has been awarded with Rs 5 crore as prize money while the runners up team Madhya Pradesh has received Rs 2.5 crore as prize money.

·         Mumbai is now the 4th team to win SMAT title twice before BarodaGuajarat and KarnatakaTamil Nadu has won the tournament thrice.

·         Shreyas Iyer has become the first captain in history to win both the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) trophies in captain and in the same year.

·         Player of the Tournament- Ajinkya Rahane (Mumbai)

·         The 2024–25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is an annual Twenty20 cricket tournament in India featuring all 38 teams from the Ranji Trophy.

 

8.       MASCOT, LOGO, ANTHEM, JERSEY, TORCH & TAGLINE FOR 38TH NATIONAL GAMES

·         Union Minister of State(MoS) Raksha Khadse, Ministry of  Youth Affairs and Sports(MYAS), unveiled the Mascot, Logo, Anthem, Jersey, Torch and Tagline for the 38th National Games at an event held at Maharana Pratap Sports College in Dehradun(Uttarakhand). 

·         The 38th National Games is scheduled to take place at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Dehradun, Uttarakhand from January 28 to February 14, 2025 with over 10,000 athletes competing in 38 sports.

·         Mascot “Mauli” , Inspired by the Monal, the state bird of Uttarakhand.

·         Tagline  “Sankalp Se Shikhar Tak” (From Resolve to Zenith), representing determination and ambition.

 

9.       WALDNER CUP -TABLE TENNIS 2024

·         Team Asia comprising India’s Manika Batra, led by Ma Long won the 1st-ever inaugural edition of the ‘Waldner Cup 2024’ by defeating Team World 14-10 in Oslo, Norway.

·         Team Asia comprised  China’s Ma Long,  Chen Meng(China),  South Korea’s Shin Yubin , Kazakhstan’s Kirill Gerassimenko and India’s Manika Batra.

 

10.    ESA LAUNCHES COPERNICUS SENTINEL-1C SATELLITE

·         The European Space Agency (ESA) successfully launched its 3rd Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellite (Sentinel-1C) into Sun-Synchronous Orbit (SSO) at an altitude of 700 kilometre(km), aboard a Vega-C rocket from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana, France.

·         This launch is the 6th Sentinel satellite in the Copernicus program launched by Arianespace SA, world’s leading aerospace company.

·         The launcher’s mission called ‘VV25’ is a return-to-flight for Vega-C, which is Europe’s lightweight, high-performance rocket.

·         The Sentinel-1C satellite strengthens the Sentinel-1 constellation (1st Copernicus family), which includes 2 identical satellites in orbit of 180°apart to optimize global coverage and data delivery for the Copernicus programme.

 

11.    OPENAI LAUNCHES SORA TURBO

·         OpenAI has officially launched its much-anticipated AI video generation model, Sora, for paid subscribers.

·         The model, introduced as Sora Turbo, allows users to generate up to 20-second-long videos in 1080p resolution.

 

12.    INDIA, FRANCE AND UAE TRILATERAL AIR EXERCISE ‘DESERT KNIGHT 2024’ 

·         The Indian Air Force (IAF), the France Air and Space Force (FASF) and the United Arab Emirates Air Force (UAEAF) have conducted their trilateral air combat exercise ‘Desert Knight 2024’ over the Arabian Sea

·         The “Desert Knight” exercise expands on the trilateral framework set up in 2022 by the foreign ministers of India, France, and the UAE.

·         This partnership covers cooperation in areas such as defence, technology, energy, and the environment, as detailed in an ambitious roadmap.

·         India has a strong strategic partnership with France through regular joint exercises like Shakti, Varuna, and Garuda, and growing defence ties with the UAE through exchanges, training, and participation in the Desert Flag exercise in the Persian Gulf region.

 

13.    SLINEX 2024 : INDIA, SRI LANKA JOINT NAVAL EXERCISE

·         The 11th Edition of annual bilateral maritime Exercise Sri Lanka-India Naval Exercise(SLINEX-24) held between the Indian Navy(IN) and the Sri Lankan Navy under the Eastern Naval Command of the IN in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh(AP).

·         It was initiated in 2005 and evolved into a significant series of exercises designed to improve interoperability, foster mutual understanding and promote maritime security in the Indian Ocean region.

14.    INS TUSHIL COMMISSIONED INTO INDIAN NAVY

·         INS Tushil, a Russian-built guided missile frigate, was commissioned into the Indian Navy at Kaliningrad, Russia

·         The ship is an upgraded version of the Krivak III-class frigate under Project 1135.6.

·         It is Part of a USD 2.5 billion deal for four stealth frigates between India and Russia signed in 2016.

 

15.    INDIA CONFER HONORARY GENERAL RANK TO NEPAL ARMY CHIEF

·         President Droupadi Murmu, honored Nepal’s Army Chief, General Ashok Raj Sigdel, with the prestigious honorary rank of ‘General of the Indian Army.

·         A unique tradition of conferring honorary military titles has been maintained between the two countries since 1950.

·         Indian Army chiefs receive the honorary rank of ‘General of Nepal Army,’ while Nepal Army chiefs receive the honorary rank of ‘General of Indian Army.’
