India
has made remarkable progress in intellectual property (IP) filings, securing 6th place globally for the
first time in 2023, according to the World Intellectual Property Organisation
(WIPO) Global Patent Filing Report.

This
achievement reflects a robust growth of
15.7% in patent filings, marking the fifth consecutive year of double-digit
growth in India.

than 64,480 patents filed in 2023

MAHATMA GANDHI LEADERSHIP AWARD
·
Indian
Actor and philanthropist Darasing Khurana has
received the “Mahatma Gandhi Leadership Award” for his
work towards raising awareness around
mental health issues as the ‘Commonwealth Year of Youth Champion’ at the
University of Oxford’s Ashmolean Museum in the United Kingdom (UK).

He served
as the keynote speaker at the Global
Mental Health Summit 2024 held at the Oxford Union at the University of
Oxford, the UK.a

BOOKER PRIZE FOR FICTION 2024
·
British author Samantha Harvey has won the prestigious Booker Prize
for Fiction for her novel “Orbital,”
a thought-provoking and imaginative exploration set in the unique setting of
the International Space Station (ISS).
·
The Booker Prize, one of the most prestigious awards
in the literary world, was awarded to Harvey
with a £50,000 prize.
·
Paul Lynch, an Irish writer, won the Booker Prize in 2022 for his novel “Prophet Song”.
·
The
award is given to novels written in
English and published in the UK or
Ireland.
·
It is open to any nationality.
·
The
Booker Prize has been awarded since
1969.

FIH STAR AWARDS 2024
·
Indian men’s hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh won
International Hockey Federation (FIH) Men’s Player of the Year award.
·
Former Goalkeeper of Indian hockey team
Parattu Raveendran (PR) Sreejesh have won
the and Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year
award.
·
Award ceremony was held at the 49th FIH
Statutory Congress held in Muscat, Oman.
·
Harmanpreet
Singh had previously won the FIH Men’s Player of the Year award in 2020-21 and
2021-22.
·
PR Sreejesh,
popularly known as “The Wall of India” won his 3rd FIH
Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year award. Earlier, he won this title for two
consecutive years i.e. in 2021 and 2022.

ADB REPORT: INDIA TO FACE 24.7% GDP LOSS BY 2070 DUE TO
CLIMATE CHANGE
·
According to the inaugural edition of
Asian Development Bank (ADB)’s report titled “Asia-Pacific Climate Report 2024:
Catalyzing Finance and Policy Solutions”, climate change under a high-end
emissions scenarios could potentially lead to 16.9% loss
in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2070 across
the Asia-Pacific region, with India projected to witness a 24.7% GDP
decline.

It has further estimated that Asia-Pacific
will experience 41% loss in GDP by 2100.
·
The
report has cautioned that if the climate crisis continues to accelerate,
then up to 300 million people in the region could be at risk from coastal inundation
and trillions of dollars’ worth of coastal assets could face annual damage
by 2070.
·
These
losses are prominent in Bangladesh (30.5%), Vietnam
(30.2%), Indonesia (26.8%), India
(24.7), the rest of Southeast Asia’ (23.4%), higher-income Southeast Asia
(22%), Pakistan (21.1%), the Pacific (18.6%), and the Philippines (18.1%).

11TH HURUN INDIA PHILANTHROPY LIST

The 11th edition
of the Hurun India Philanthropy list has been
released by the EdelGive Foundation in partnership with Hurun India in November
2024
·
Shiv Nadar (79) and his
family have retained the title of India’s Most Generous for
the third time in five years as he donated Rs
2,153 crore during the Financial Year (FY) 2023-24.
·
The 2nd spot on
the list was occupied by Chairman and Managing director(CMD) of Reliance
Industries Limited, Mukesh Ambani who donated Rs
407 crore.
·
The 3rd spot
was secured by the Bajaj family with a donation
of Rs 352 crore.
·
Rohini Nilekani (69),co-founder and
director of EkStep, has been named as the India’s most
generous woman with a personal donation of Rs.154 crores and
led the list of Indian women philanthropists.
·
Zerodha co-founder Nikhil
Kamath has been listed as one of the youngest philanthropists in
the EdelGive-Hurun India Philanthropy List 2024 at 38 years.
7. QS ASIA UNIVERSITY RANKINGS 2025
·
Quacquarelli Symonds (QS)
released the 16th edition of the ‘QS World University
Ranking Asia 2025‘ which showed that Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD)
(75.4), New Delhi, secured the top
spot in India with the 44th position (from 46th
in 2024) on the list.
·
It was followed by Indian Institute of
Technology Bombay (IITB) (73.1), Mumbai, Maharashtra at
the 48th position
·
The Indian Institute of
Technology Madras (IITM) (69.6), Chennai, Tamil Nadu is at
the 56th position and are the top 3 universities from India featured in the list.
·
Peking University, Beijing(China) secured 1st spot in the QS Asia University
Rankings 2025 with an overall score of 100
·
It is followed by the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong(China) and the National University of Singapore (NUS),
Singapore on the 2nd and
3rd spot respectively.

WHO REPORT ON TB
·
According to the World Health Organisation
(WHO)’s Global Tuberculosis (TB)
Report 2024 released on 29th October 2024, India has registered a 17.7% decline
in TB incidence from 237 per lakh
population in 2015 to 195 in 2023, which is more
than twice the global average decline of 8.3%.
·
The report has acknowledged the
significant progress made by India in
bridging the gap of missed TB cases since 2015.
·
As
per the report, the net reduction in the
global number of deaths caused by TB
between 2015 and 2023 was 23%, which is almost 1/3rd
of the WHO End TB strategy milestone of
a 75% reduction by 2025.
·
The
report showed that globally, the number
of deaths caused by TB has declined
in 2023, from 1.32 million (in 2022) to 1.25 million (in
2023).
9. GLOBAL CITY INDEX 2024
·
According to the Brand Finance’s Global City
Index 2024, London, the United
Kingdom (UK), has again emerged as the world’s top city brand for 2nd consecutive
year, with overall score of 90.9 out of 100.
·
It is followed by New York City, the United States of America (USA), Paris,
France secured 2nd and 3rd position
respectively.
·
Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has emerged as the highest-ranked city in the West Asia
and Africa region for the 2nd consecutive year.

·
Indian wrestler Chirag Chikkara won
a gold medal in the men’s freestyle
57kg category by defeating Abdymalik
·
Karachov of Kyrgyzstan in
the finals of the 7th edition of United World
Wrestling (UWW) Under-23 (U23) World Wrestling Championships 2024 held in Tirana, Albania.
·
The 18-year-old became only the second Indian men’s wrestler and third overall
to win the gold medal at the U23 World Championships.
·
India
clinched a total of nine medals
including one gold, one silver
and seven bronze, placing the nation fourth in
the team standings with 82 points, behind Iran (158), Japan (102)
and Azerbaijan (100).

CHENNAI GRANDMASTERS 2024

Grandmaster (GM) Aravindh Chithambaram clinched
the Masters title after tying for first

tiebreak with a 2-0 score at the 2nd edition of the
Chennai Grandmasters 2024 held at the Anna Centenary Library in
Chennai, Tamil Nadu (TN).

In the
Challengers category, GM Pranav Venkatesh emerged victorious after drawing with
Leon Mendonca (India) thus ending the competition with four wins and three
draws.
·
The
Chennai Grand Masters is an 8-player single round-robin
with a time control of 90 minutes for the game plus 30-second increments per
move.

HOCKEY INDIA BEGINS CELEBRATION OF 100 YEARS OF INDIAN HOCKEY

Hockey India(HI) announced
a year-long celebration to mark the 100th year of Indian hockey. 2025,
the centenary year of Hockey India, is a tribute to
a century of unparalleled excellence and vision for the future of Hockey in
India.
·
Hockey
India was formed as India’s first national body
for Hockey on 7th November 1925 in Gwalior, Madhya
Pradesh(MP).
·
As
a part of the celebration, Hockey India
relaunched the Men’s Hockey India League (HIL) after a 7-year pause and
also announced the launch of the Women’s
HIL.
·
Over
these100 years, the Indian Men’s hockey
team has won 8 gold medals, one silver and 4 bronze medals in the Olympics.

They
have also won the 1975 Hockey World Cup
trophy.
