51ST CHIEF JUSTICE OF INDIA
·
Justice Sanjiv Khanna was sworn in
as the 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI)
succeeding Justice Dhananjaya Yeshwant (DY) Chandrachud who
retired on November 10, 2024.
·
Justice Sanjiv Khanna will hold the post
till May 13, 2025.
·
JusticeSanjiv
Khanna enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1983.
·
He
was elevated as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in 2005 and was
made a permanent judge in 2006 and later became a Judge of the Supreme Court of
India on 18th January 2019.
·
He
has been part of several landmark judgments. Some significant cases include Revocation
of Article 370,Electoral Bonds Scheme,Electronic
Voting Machines (EVMs): Upholding their use while ensuring that
adequate safeguards are in place
·
Article 124 (1) of the Constitution of India states
that there shall be a Supreme Court of
India consisting of the Chief Justice of India.
·
Article 126 of the constitution deals with the appointment of an acting CJI.
·
The
CJI is appointed by the President of
India under Clause (2) of Article
124 of the Constitution of India.

PRESIDENT OF MOLDOVA
·
Maia Sandu, a former World Bank
economist, has been re-elected to a 2nd term as
the President of Moldova.
·
She received 55.33% of the vote against
44.67% for Alexandr Stoianoglo, a former prosecutor general backed by the
pro-Russian Socialist Party
·
She previously served as the President of
the Republic of Moldova from 2020 to 2024.

INTERPOL’S NEW SECRETARY GENERAL
·
Valdecy Urquiza, a Federal Police Commissioner from Brazil, has
been elected as the new Secretary-General
of the International Criminal Police Organisation INTERPOL,during
its 92nd General
Assembly held at Glasgow(Scotland) in the United
Kingdom(UK).
·
He is succeeding Jürgen
Stock (Germany), who served the Organisation for a decade.
·
He was the first person from a developing country Brazil to
hold this position since INTERPOL’s establishment in 1923.
·
Prime Minister (PM) of the UK has
opened the 92nd General Assembly of INTERPOL Organisation
·
From India, the annual event was attended by the
Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) director, Praveen Sood and Vijayendra
Bidari, joint director in the federal
anti-corruption agency.
·
Taiwan seeks to join as an observer in
the 92nd INTERPOL General Assembly to strengthen international cooperation in
combating global crimes.
·
INTERPOL was founded in 1923 as the International Criminal Police
Commission (ICPC) in Vienna, Austria. In
1956, the organization adopted the name INTERPOL, derived from “International
Criminal Police Organization” (ICPO).

Alix Didier Fils-Aime has been sworn in as Haiti’s new
prime minister
·

PM-VIDYALAXMI SCHEME
·
The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime
Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, has approved PM Vidyalaxmi,
a new Central Sector Scheme (CSS) which aims to provide financial assistance to meritorious
students
·
As per the scheme, any meritorious student
who gets admission in Quality Higher
Educational Institutions (QHEIs) will be eligible to
get collateral free, guarantor-free
loan from banks and financial institutions (FIs) to
cover tuition fees and other course-related expenses.
·
The GoI
has allocated Rs 3,600 crore for the scheme during
the period from Financial Year 2024-25 (FY25) to FY31, and 7 lakh new students are students are expected to avail the benefit
of this interest subvention during the period.

INDIA’S FIRST IGBC-CERTIFIED ZOO IN KANGRA, HP
·
Durgesh Aranya Zoological Park,
located in the Bankhandi area of
Kangra’s Dehra constituency in HP, will set to become the first zoo
in India to receive certification from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC).
·
This certification highlights the commitment to sustainable infrastructure
and eco-friendly practices, setting a new benchmark for conservation and
environmental responsibility across the country.
·
The
entire park, with a budget of Rs 619 crore, will
boost tourism in Kangra and its neighboring areas, creating a thriving, eco-friendly
attraction.
·
The Indian Green Building Council
(IGBC), headquartered in Hyderabad, Telangana and established in 2001 as part of the
Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), serves as India’s premier certification
body for green buildings.

INDIA JOINS ARIN-AP STEERING COMMITTEE
·
India has joined the Steering Committee of the Asset
Recovery Interagency Network-Asia Pacific (ARIN-AP) to combat
economic crimes and enhance asset recovery capabilities.
·
India will assume the Presidency of
the network in 2026 and
host its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in
2026.
·
ARIN-AP is a multi-agency network based in Seoul,
South Korea facilitating the exchange of information regarding
individuals, companies, and assets involved in unlawful activities across
the Asia-Pacific region.
·
It
has 28 member jurisdictions and 9 observers.
·
It
operates under the framework of the Paris, France-based Camden
Asset Recovery Inter-Agency Network (CARIN), which includes over
100 jurisdictions worldwide.
·
Directorate of Enforcement (ED) is responsible for enforcement of the
Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999 (FEMA) and certain provisions under the
Prevention of Money Laundering Act. It is working under the Department of
Revenue(DoR) in the Ministry of Finance(MoF).

1ST INDIAN CITY TO WIN GLOBAL AWARD FOR
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN CITIES
·
The Thiruvananthapuram Municipal
Corporation in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, has become the first Indian city to
win the Global Award for Sustainable Development in Cities, also known as the Shanghai Award.
·
The award ceremony was held in Alexandria, Egypt, coinciding
with the observance of World Cities Day 2024.
·
5
global cities were selected for the award this year, with Agadir (Morocco), Melbourne (Australia),
Doha (Qatar), and Iztapalapa (Mexico)
also being recognized alongside Thiruvananthapuram.
·
The
Global Award for Sustainable Development in Cities, launched by United Nations
Human Settlements Programme (UN Habitat) and the
Shanghai Municipality, recognizes cities advancing sustainable practices
aligned with the 2030 Agenda and New Urban Agenda, focusing on Sustainable
Development Goal 11 (SDG 11) to create inclusive, safe,
resilient, and sustainable cities.

CENTRAL SECTOR SCHEME “NAMO DRONE DIDI”
·
The Government of India (GoI)
has approved the Central Sector Scheme ‘Namo Drone Didi’ for
providing Drones to the Women Self Help
Groups (SHGs) under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana –
National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM), with an
outlay of Rs 1261 Crores.
·
This aims to provide drones to 14500 selected Women
SHGs during the period from 2024-25 to 2025-2026 to
provide rental services to farmers for
agricultural purposes like the application of liquid fertilizers and
pesticides for the present.

7TH ED OF RECAAP ISC
·
The Governing Council of Regional
Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in
Asia Information Sharing Centre (ReCAAP ISC), Singapore has
appointed Additional Director General
(Retd) VD Chafekar, the former senior officer of
the Indian Coast Guard(ICG) as its 7th Executive
Director(ED).
·
ReCAAP
ISC, established in 2006, is the first
regional government-to-government agreement to promote and enhance cooperation
against piracy and armed robbery at sea in Asia.

16TH MEETING OF THE CBD COP
·
The 16th meeting
of the Conference of the Parties to the
Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 16) was
conducted in Cali, Colombia.
·
The
theme of the conference was “Peace with Nature “.
·
The conference’s main goal was to assess
progress on the 2022 Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity
Framework (KM-GBF), which set targets to protect 30% of global
land and sea areas and restore 30% of
degraded ecosystems by 2030.
·
India has taken a significant step in
global wildlife conservation by setting up the International Big
Cat Alliance(IBCA) to protect the world’s seven major big cat
species for preserving ecosystems and enriched biodiversity.
·
World’s First of its kind Global
Ecosystems Atlas at the 16th Conference of Parties (COP16) has
been launched to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
·
UN
COP16 summit agreed to establish a subsidiary body
that will include Indigenous peoples in future decisions on nature
conservation.

AZERBAIJAN

The 29th UN Climate Summit, COP29, kicked off in Baku, Azerbaijan, ,
with discussions set to focus on vital climate finance mechanisms, particularly
the new “New Collective Quantified Goal”
(NCQG).
·
COP29 has been dubbed the “Finance COP” due to its central focus on financial strategies
·
COP29’s key agenda is to secure agreements on climate finance, addressing the historic failure to
meet previous funding targets.
