1.       PRESIDENT OF IBRO

·         Indian neuroscientist Shubha Tole has been appointed as the president-elect of the International Brain Research Organisation (IBRO), marking her as the first scientist from a developing country to attain this prestigious position. She will replace Tracy Bale.

·         It was announced at the IBRO’s annual assembly in Chicago, the United States of America (USA).

 

2.       SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE WORLD AGRICULTURE FORUM

·         Dr. Jacqueline d’Arros Hughes, the outgoing Director General of the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), is set to take up the role of Secretary General of the World Agriculture Forum (WAF) in mid-November 2024.

 


3.       UNDER-SECRETARY-GENERAL FOR HUMANITARIAN AFFAIRS

·         United Nations (UN) Secretary-General (SG) António Guterres appointed Tom Fletcher of the United Kingdom (UK) as Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

·         Tom Fletcher will succeed Martin Griffiths of the UK, who stepped down from the post in July 2024 due to health reasons.

 

4.       ICC ANTI-CORRUPTION UNIT CHAIR

·         The International Cricket Council (ICC) has appointed Sri Lankan legal expert Sumathi Dharmawardena as the new independent chair for its Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU), effective November 1, 2024.

·         The ICC is headquartered in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), a move made in 2005 from its previous base at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.

·         Greg Barclay serves as the ICC Chairman, and Geoff Allardice is the CEO.

 

5.       SCHEME- UDE DESH KA AAM NAGRIK COMPLETED 8 YEARS

·         The Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) – UDAN, or “Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik,” spearheaded by the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), celebrated the completion of 8 years in service to the nation.

·         21st October 2024 marks the 8th anniversary of RCS UDAN, which was launched on 21st October 2016.

·         Narendra Modi, Prime Minister (PM) of India, inaugurated the first RCS-UDAN flight, connecting Shimla to Delhi on 27th April 2017.

 

6.       INDIA & SEYCHELLES SIGN MOU FOR COLLABORATION IN AUDITING

·         The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) and Office of the Auditor General Auditing (OAG), Republic of Seychelles have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Victoria, Seychelles to boost training opportunities and information sharing between their respective Auditor General’s offices.

·         The agreement was signed by Girish Chandra Murmu, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India, and Gamini Herath, the Auditor General of the Republic of Seychelles during the CAG Girish Chandra Murmu’s official visit to Seychelles.

7.       ITU WORLD TELECOMMUNICATION STANDARDIZATION ASSEMBLY

·         Narendra Modi, Prime Minister(PM) of India, inaugurated the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA) 2024 in New Delhi

·         PM Modi also inaugurated the 8th edition of India Mobile Congress(IMC 2024), Asia’s largest digital technology forum during the programme.

·         ITU-WTSA 2024 was held from hosted by India in New Delhi

·         WTSA was hosted in India for the first time in ITU’s history of 150 years.

·         This also marks the first WTSA hosted in the Asia-Pacific.

8.       SHAKTIKANTA DAS RECEIVES A+ GRADE IN CENTRAL BANK REPORT CARDS 2024

·         Shaktikanta Das, the Governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) received an ‘A+’ grade in Central Bank Report Cards 2024 for the second consecutive year during an event in Washington D.C,USA

·         He has been placed at the top of the list of three central bank governors, who have been rated A+.Denmark’s

·         Christian Kettel Thomsen, and Switzerland’s Thomas Jordan have also been ranked under the ‘A+’ category of central bankers.

 

9.       SOHRAI PAINTINGS: A GIFT TO RUSSIAN PRESIDENT

·         Prime Minister Modi presented Russian President Vladimir Putin with a Sohrai painting from Hazaribagh district in Jharkhand during the recently held BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia

·         The BRICS Summit served as an ideal platform to bring global attention to India’s One District One Product (ODOP) initiative, which aims to foster local art and crafts,

·         He also presented unique, handcrafted artifacts representing different regions of India to leaders of various countries. Including Maharashtra’s Mother of Pearl Sea Shell Vase and Warli Painting.

 

10.    CITY WITH THE BEST PUBLIC TRANSPORT SYSTEM

·         The 17th Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference & Exhibition 2024 concluded in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

11.    CENTRE TO BEGIN CENSUS FROM 2025

·         The Central government is set to commence the long-awaited census exercise in 2025, aiming for completion by 2026.

·         This census was originally scheduled for 2021 but faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

·         The delimitation of Lok Sabha seats will commence post-census completion, with a target completion date of 2028.

 

12.    eShram ONE STOP SOLUTION FOR UNORGANISED WORKERS

·         Union Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Ministry of Labour & Employment (MoL&E) launched the ‘eShram One Stop Solution‘ from New Delhi to enhance easier access to various social security schemes for unorganized workers.

·         eShram – One Stop Solution will act as a facilitator, ensuring that unorganised workers can easily access various Government schemes.

·         The eShram portal, originally launched in August 2021 by MoL&E for creation of National Database of Unorganized Workers (NDUW).

·         It has already registered over 30 crore workers, showcasing its vital role in providing welfare services.

·         Unorganized workers aged between 16-59 years can register on this portal.

·         There is a significant increase in user engagement, with approximately 60,000 to 90,000 new registrations daily, reflecting growing trust in the platform.

 

13.    INDIA’S FIRST WRITER’S VILLAGE

·         India’s first ‘Writer’s Village’ was inaugurated in Dehradun by former President Ram Nath Kovind

·         This unique village aims to foster creativity and provide a nurturing environment for writers from across the country, establishing Dehradun as a new cultural hub for literary talent.

 

14.    WORLD ENERGY OUTLOOK 2024

·         The International Energy Agency’s (IEA) has released its flagship report titled ‘World Energy Outlook (WEO 2024)’. 

·         It states that India is on track to become the third-largest economy in the world by 2028.

·         The report emphasized that the world is entering the Age of Electricity, with increased growth in global power demand, especially in China, where solar power generation could exceed the total electricity demand of the United States of America (USA) by the early 2030s.

·         Electric Vehicles(EVs) projected to account for 50% of new car sales by 2030.

·         Global electricity demand is on track to double by 2050, mainly due to China’s large scale energy transition, according to the Carbon Tracker’s statement on the IEA’s WEO 2024.

15.    FATF REVISED GREY LISTING CRITERIA

·         The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has revised the criteria for placing countries on its grey list. 

·         The main objective of these changes is to reduce the burden on Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and to focus on those nations that pose great risks to the international financial system.

·         FATF observed that LDCs are mostly affected by the impact of illicit financial flows, which impedes sustainable development.

·         As per the revised criteria, jurisdictions will be prioritized for active review if they meet the referral criteria and are Country which is a member of FATF;

·         Country on the World Bank’s High Income Countries (HICs) list (excluding those with a financial sector of two or fewer banks);

·         Country that has financial sector assets more than USD 10 billion (measured by broad money).

·         LDCs, as defined by the United Nations (UN), will not be prioritized for active review unless the FATF agrees that they poses serious risks such as money laundering, terrorist financing or proliferation financing.

·         In such cases, LDCs which are subject to review process will be granted a longer observation period of two years to work on progress against their key recommended action roadmap.

·         The Grey list identifies countries with strategic deficiencies in their Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Countering the Financing of Terrorism system.

·         Currently, countries which are on the grey list: Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Croatia, Kenya, Congo, Haiti, Mali, Monaco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Philippines, Senegal, South Africa, South Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Venezuela, Vietnam and Yemen.
