1.       JAMAICAN PM ANDREW HOLNESS’S VISIT TO INDIA

·         https://affairscloud.com/assets/plugins/wccp-pro/images/transparent.gifAndrew Holness, Prime Minister(PM) of Jamaica, paid a 4-day visit to India to strengthen bilateral ties in key areas including trade and investment.

·         This marks the first-ever bilateral visit by a Jamaican PM to India as well as the first visit of Andrew Holness to India.

·         Narendra Modi, PM of India, highlighted that the India-Jamaica relationship is defined by 4Cs- culture, cricket, Commonwealth and Caribbean.

·         India and Jamaica exchanged 4 Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) in the fields of Digital Public Infrastructure, Cultural Exchange and Sports.

2.       TUNISIA’S PRESIDENT

·         President Kais Saied has secured a second five-year term as Tunisia’s leader in an election marked by both overwhelming numbers and significant concerns.

·         The Independent High Authority for Elections of Tunisia (ISIE) announced on October 7, 2024, that Saied had won a staggering 90.7 percent of the votes cast

·         The Jasmine Revolution of 2011 marked a pivotal moment in Tunisia’s history as it Overthrew dictator Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali

3.       BCCI ANTI-CORRUPTION UNIT CHIEF

·         BCCI has appointing retired IPS officer Sharad Kumar as the new chief of its Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU).

·         He is  1979 IPS officer (Haryana cadre)

 

AWARDS/PRIZES

4.       NOBEL PRIZE IN PHYSIOLOGY OR MEDICINE 2024

·         Victor Ambros, an American developmental biologist, and Gary Bruce Ruvkun, an American molecular biologist, were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2024 by the Nobel Assembly at KarolinskaInstitutet, Stockholm, Sweden.

·         They were honoured “for the discovery of microRNA and its role in post-transcriptional gene regulation”. 

 

5.       NOBEL PRIZE IN PHYSICS 2024

·         American physicist John J. Hopfield and British-Canadian Computer scientist Geoffrey E. Hinton were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics 2024 by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm, Sweden

·         They were awarded “for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks”.

·         Prize amount: 11 million Swedish kronor will be shared equally between the laureates.

 

6.       NOBEL PRIZE IN CHEMISTRY 2024

·         https://affairscloud.com/assets/plugins/wccp-pro/images/transparent.gifAmerican biochemist David Baker, Demis Hassabis, the Chief Executive Office (CEO ) of Deep Mind Technologies Limited, a subsidiary of Google, and American chemist John Jumper were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2024

·         The Nobel Prize is awarded to David Baker “for computational protein design” and to Demis Hassabis and John Jumper “for protein structure prediction”.

·         Prize amount- 11 million Swedish kronor

 

7.       NOBEL PRIZE 2024 IN LITERATURE

·         The Nobel Prize in Literature 2024 has been awarded to Han Kang, a prominent South Korean author, in recognition of her intense poetic prose that addresses historical traumas and unveils the fragility of human life.

·         Before receiving the Nobel Prize, Han Kang gained international acclaim with her 2016novel ‘The Vegetarian’, which won the Man Booker International Prize.

 

8.       NOBEL PEACE PRIZE

·         The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2024 to the Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo.

·         This grassroots movement of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, also known as Hibakusha, is receiving the Peace Prize for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again.

·         The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by a committee elected by the Norwegian Parliament (Stortinget).

 

9.       NOBEL IN ECONOMICS 2024

·         The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the SverigesRiksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel for 2024 to three US-based economists - Daron Acemoglu, James A Robinson and Simon Johnson.

·         Their research sheds light on a fundamental question that has intrigued economists for decades: Why are some nations rich while others remain poor?

·         Their research focuses on the impact of societal institutions on economic prosperity, exploring how the frameworks governing behaviour can lead to significant disparities in wealth among countries.

·         The Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences was established in 1968 by the SverigesRiksbank (the central bank of Sweden) in memory of Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite and the founder of the Nobel Prizes.

·         It is officially called the SverigesRiksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel.

·         ABOUT NOBEL PRIZE-Unlike the original Nobel Prizes in fields like physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, and peace, which were established by Nobel's will, the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences is not one of the original Nobel Prizes.

·         The Nobel Day – which takes place on 10 December every year, marks the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death and is the day that the Nobel Prizes are presented to Nobel laureates.

10.    MIDORI PRIZE 2024

·         The MIDORI Prize for Biodiversity 2024 has been awarded to VeraVoronova from Kazakhstan and Ysabel Agustina Calderón Carlos from Peru for their exemplary contributions to biodiversity conservation and sustainability.

·         The prize, awarded every two years by the AEON Environmental Foundation and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, includes a $100,000 cash prize and a commemorative plaque.
