1.       75TH IAC HELD IN MILAN, ITALY

·         The 75th International Astronautical Congress (IAC 2024) was held at the Milano Congress Center (Allianz MiCo), Europe’s largest conference venue in Milan, Italy.

·         It was organized by the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) and co-hosted by the Italian Association of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIDAA) and the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and Leonardo.

·         The theme of IAC 2024 is  "Responsible Space for Sustainability"

·         The significant highlights of the congress included the the awarding of the IAF World Space Award 2024 to ISRO Chairman Dr. S. Somanath, launch of ESA’s Moonlight Programme for lunar communication, and the unveiling of the AxEMU spacesuit by Axiom Space and Prada.

·         The IAC 2025 will be held in Sydney, Australia

·         International Astronautical Federation (IAF) Headquarters – Paris, France

·         Founded – 1951

 

2.       USA, JAPAN & SOUTH KOREA TO SUPPORT DIGITAL INFRASTRUCTURE IN INDIA

·         The United States of America(USA), Japan and South Korea have signed the Digital Infrastructure Growth Initiative for India Framework (DiGi Framework) to strengthen the digital infrastructure development in India.

·         The framework was signed between US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), and the Export-Import Bank of Korea (Korea EximbankKEXIM) at the DFC headquarters in Washington D.C., the USA.

·         This will support the projects in the Information and Communications Technology(ICT) sector such as 5G, Open Radio Access Network (RAN), submarine cables, optical fibre networks, telecom towers, data centres, smart city, e-commerce, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and quantum technology.

 


3.       BRAZIL OPTS OUT OF CHINA’S BELT AND ROAD INITIATIVE

·         Brazil has chosen not to join China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), becoming the second member of the BRICS bloc, after India, to opt out of Beijing’s ambitious multi-billion-dollar infrastructure project.

·         The decision, is taken by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva

 

4.       MOST POLLUTED CITY IN THE WORLD

·         Lahore has once again claimed the title of the most polluted city globally, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) soaring to alarming levels.

·         Recently recorded at a staggering 708, the PM2.5 levels reached an unprecedented 431 µg/m³, significantly exceeding the World Health Organization’s recommended annual limit by 86 times.

 

5.       NCPCR REPORT ON CHILD MARRIAGE

·         According to the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR)’s latest report, over 11.5 lakh children across the 27 states and 7 Union Territories (UTs) of India were found to be “vulnerable” to child marriage in 2023-24.

·         As per the report, Uttar Pradesh (UP) with over 5 lakh vulnerable children, topped among the states, followed by Assam with 1.5 lakh children and Madhya Pradesh (MP) has nearly 1 lakh such children.

·         UTs like Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar Islands has identified no children vulnerable to child marriage.

·         National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) It is the statutory body established under the Commissions for Protection of Child Rights (CPCR) Act, 2005 under the administrative control of the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MoW&CD).

6.       WORLD JUSTICE PROJECT’S RULE OF LAW INDEX 2024

·         The World Justice Project (WJP) Rule of Law Index 2024 reveals that India ranks 79th out of 142 countries, reflecting a continuing decline in the rule of law globally.

·         For the seventh consecutive year, rule of law scores declined in 57% of countries worldwide, attributed mainly to authoritarian trends and a decline in Fundamental Rights.

·         Regionally, India holds the 3rd position among 6 South Asian countries.

·         Among lower-middle-income countries, India ranked 8th out of 38.

·         Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Germany top the list,

·         Venezuela, Cambodia, Afghanistan, Haiti, and Myanmar rank the lowest.

·         Within South Asia, India ranked third after Nepal (69) and Sri Lanka (75), followed by Bangladesh (127) Pakistan (129) and Afghanistan (140).

·         Venezuela got the lowest rank and placed at 142.

 

7.       HARRY MESSEL AWARD FOR CONSERVATION LEADERSHIP 

·         Assam-based conservation scientist Bibhab Kumar Talukdar has been awarded the prestigious Harry Messel Award for Conservation Leadership by the Species Survival Commission (SSC) of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in Abu Dhabi.

·         Talukdar has been an influential conservationist associated with IUCN SSC since 1991 and became Chair of the Asian Rhino Specialist Group in 2008.

·         Talukdar has played a pivotal role in organizing three Asian Rhino States meetings in Indonesia, India, and Nepal, resulting in a landmark commitment to protect Asian rhino species.

 

8.       ANR AWARD

·         Amitabh Bachchan recently honored renowned Telugu film star Chiranjeevi at the ANR National Awards 2024, an event organized by the Akkineni International Foundation.

·         This prestigious award recognizes artists for their lifetime contributions to cinema.

·         The ANR National Awards celebrate the legacy of late Akkineni Nageswara Rao, a renowned actor-producer in Telugu cinema, and aim to honor those who have made significant impacts in the film industry.

 

9.       BEST SPORTS LEAGUE AWARDS

·         The Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) proudly received the prestigious ‘Best Sports League of the Year’ award at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Sports Business Awards 2024.

·         The award ceremony took place in New Delhi

 

10.    FIJI’S HIGHEST CIVILIAN AWARD

·         The Republic of Fiji has bestowed its highest civilian award, the “Honourary Officer of the Order of Fiji,” on Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar founder of The Art of Living Foundation.

·         This recognition, presented by Fiji’s President, Ratu Wiliame M. Katonivere

 

11.    50TH AFI LIFE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

·         Oscar-winning filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola is set to be honored with the AFI Life Achievement Award, 

·         The AFI Life Achievement Award was established by the board of directors of the American Film Institute on February 26, 1973, to honor a single individual for their lifetime contribution to enriching American culture through motion pictures and television.

·         The AFI Life Achievement Award recognizes individuals whose work has significantly advanced the art of film.

 

12.    UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX

·         Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc (Monaco) won the title at the Formula 1(F1) United States (US) Grand Prix (GP) 2024 held in Austin, Texas, USA

·         Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz finished 2nd and Red Bull Racing Honda RBPT’s Max Verstappen finished 3rd.

 

13.    MEXICO CITY GRAND PRIX

·         Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz (Spain) won the Mexico City Grand Prix (GP) 2024  at the  Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City, Mexico.

·         Lando Norris of McLaren finished 2nd and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished 3rd. 

 

14.    MAJOR SPORTS DROPPED FROM COMMONWEALTH GAMES 2026

·         The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) announced that wrestling, badmintonhockey, cricket and shooting, among other major sports, have been dropped from the Commonwealth Games 2026 (CWG 2026).

·         The 23rd edition of CWG is scheduled to take place in Glasgow, Scotland in August, 2026.

·         Table Tennis (TT), Squash and Triathlon have also been excluded in a bid to limit the cost and streamline logistics as only 4 venues will host the entire CWG 2026.

·         With this, total number of sport events has reduced to 10 compared to 19 sports events at the 2022 Birmingham CWG.

15.    LOGO AND TAGLINE FOR KHO KHO WORLD CUP

·         The Kho Kho Federation of India (KKFI) unveiled the logo and tagline – #TheWorldGoesKho, for the inaugural Kho Kho World Cup set to take place in 2025

·         The tournament will feature 16 teams each in the men’s and women’s divisions

·         The tournament will introduce new rules, including a concept called “wazir,” designed to make the game more spectator-friendly and engaging.

 

16.    BALLON D’OR 2024 - FOOTBALL

·         Ballon d’Or is an annual award given by France Football to the best male and female footballers over the previous year

·         This Year UEFA also partnered with France Football award

·         Rodri (Spain, Manchester City) secured the men’s Ballon d’Or award

·         Aitana Bonmatí (Spain, Barcelona) For the second consecutive year, Bonmatí earned the title of the world’s best female footballer.

·         Lamine Yamal (Spain, Barcelona) The 17-year-old prodigy claimed the Kopa Trophy, awarded to the best player under 21.

·         Real Madrid took home the Men’s Club of the Year award for the winning UEFA Champions League, La Liga and Spanish super cup.

·         Carlo Ancelotti, Real Madrid’s manager, was named Men’s Coach of the Year.

·         Yashin Trophy (Best Goalkeeper)-Emiliano Martínez (Argentina, Aston Villa)

·         Gerd Müller Trophy-Shared by Kylian Mbappé (France, PSG/Real Madrid) and Harry Kane (England, Bayern Munich) for their 52-goal achievements across all competitions.

·         Women’s Coach of the Year-Emma Hayes (Chelsea, USA)

·         Socrates Award-Jenni Hermoso (Spain, Tigres UANL) – Recognized for her humanitarian efforts off the field.

 

17.    U23 WORLD WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

·         Chirag Chikkara made history by becoming only the third Indian wrestler to win the Under-23 World Championship in the men’s freestyle 57kg category

·         India secured a total of nine medals at the championships,1 Gold Medal: Chirag Chikkara ,2 Silver Medals,6 Bronze Medals

·         India placed fourth in the overall team rankings with 82 points, behind Iran (158), Japan (102), and Azerbaijan (100).
