1.       BRICS SUMMIT

·         16th BRICS summit held in Kazan, Russia under chairmanship of Vladimir Putin

·         Theme, “Strengthening Multilateralism for Fair Global Development and Security,”

·         BRICS is an international organization made up of five major emerging economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

·         This organization was started in 2006

·         BRICS began as BRIC, a term coined in a 2001 report by economist Jim O’Neill, referring to Brazil, Russia, India, and China. First summit was held in Yekaterinburg, Russia, in 2009

·         South Africa joined in 2010, leading to the name change to BRICS.

·         The 15th BRICS Summit, held in Johannesburg, marked a significant milestone with the group’s expansion by inviting six new members: Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

2.       EGYPT DECLARED MALARIA-FREE

·         Egypt has been officially declared ‘malaria-free’ by the World Health Organization (WHO)

·         This achievement makes Egypt the second country in the world to receive this certification in 2024, following Cabo Verde.

·         Egypt is the third country in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region to receive malaria-free certification, joining the United Arab Emirates (2007) and Morocco (2010).

 


3.       ASIAN DEVELOPMENT BANK (ADB) 69TH MEMBER

·         Israel has become the newest non-regional member of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

·         Israel officially joined the Asian Development Bank (ADB) as its 69th member and 20th non regional member

·         The ADB, established in 1966, serves as a major financial institution aimed at promoting social and economic development across Asia and the Pacific.

4.       ASIA CLEAN ENERGY SUMMIT 2024

·         The Asia Clean Energy Summit (ACES), a cornerstone event of the annual Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW), is held on the 11th edition in Singapore.

 

5.       MEMORIAL FOR UNSUNG HEROES OF MILITARY INTELLIGENCE ‘SATARK PARK’

·         The Indian Army (IA) inaugurated its first memorial, “Satark Park” in Pune (Maharashtra), dedicated to honouring Military Intelligence (MI) personnel who lost their lives in service.

·         The memorial is inspired by MI’s motto “Sada Satark” (always alert).

 

6.       INDIAN NAVY & BAJAJ ALLIANZ LIFE SIGNED MOU

·         The Indian Navy (IN) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Pune(Maharashtra) based Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance Company Limited (BALIC),  marking a significant initiative to enhance the welfare of its civilian personnel.

·         This initiative aligns with the IN’s declaration of the 2024 as ‘Year of Naval Civilians,’ aimed at enhancing the work environment and welfare measures for civilian staff

·         BALIC will offer a diverse range of life insurance products under this partnership, including term insurance and other plans tailored to meet the varied life goals of naval civilians.

 

7.       INDIAN ARMY LAUNCHES DETONATION DEVICE “AGNIASTRA”

·         Indian Army (IA)’s Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), General UpendraDwivedi launched the “Agniastra,” a multi-target portable detonation device (WEDC), during the Army Commanders Conference (ACC) held in Gangtok, Sikkim.

·         WEDC was created to improve the safety and reliability of executing multiple-target detonations, addressing shortcomings of older systems like the Exploder Dynamo Capacitor​.

·         The device significantly increases the operational range to 2.5 kilometers, compared to the limited 400-meter range of its predecessor. This allows for greater tactical flexibility​.

·         WEDC can operate in both wired and wireless modes.

 

8.       INDIA AND OMAN CONDUCT JOINT NAVAL DRILL

·         The India-Oman bilateral naval exercise Naseem-Al-Bahr, held from off the coast of Goa

·         It is held in two phases Harbour Phase and Sea Phase

·         Oman is the first Gulf country with which all three wings of India’s defense forces—Army, Navy, and Air Force—hold joint exercises.

 

9.       EXERCISE ‘SWAVLAMBAN SHAKTI’

·         The Army’s Sudarshan Chakra Corps of the Southern Command is currently conducting ‘Exercise SWAVLAMBAN SHAKTI’ at the Babina Field Firing Ranges near Jhansi

·         The XXI Corps or Sudarshan Chakra Corps, a strike corps of the army, is headquartered in Bhopal.

 

10.    SINGAPORE INDIA MARITIME BILATERAL EXERCISE (SIMBEX)

·         It is held in two phases

·         Harbour phase held at the Eastern Naval Command (ENC) in Visakhapatnam

·         Sea Phase: Bay of Bengal

·         SIMBEX, initially began as ‘Exercise Lion King’ in 1994

 

11.    INDIA’S FOURTH NUCLEAR-POWERED BALLISTIC MISSILE SUBMARINE (SSBN)

·         India’s fourth nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN), designated S4, was officially launched into the water at the Ship Building Centre in Visakhapatnam

·         INS Chakra was designated as S1, followed by INS Arihant as S2, and INS Arighaat as S3.

·         The INS Arihant (the first of its class) carries K-15 nuclear missiles with a range of 750 km.

·         INS Arighaat and S4* are upgrades and exclusively carry K-4 ballistic missiles.

·         The formal name for S4* still pending.

 

12.    129MN INDIANS LIVES IN EXTREME POVERTY IN 2024: WB REPORT

·         The World Bank (WB)’s  ‘Poverty, Prosperity, and Planet Report 2024-Pathways Out of the Polycrisis‘ reveals that India has 129 million citizens living in extreme poverty as they are surviving on less than Rs 180 (USD 2.15) per day.

·         This figure marks a significant decline from 431 million in 1990

·         Individuals are classified as extremely poor if they earn less than Rs 180 (USD 2.15) daily.

·         The increased poverty threshold of USD 6.85 (around Rs 576) for middle-income countries results in more individuals below this line compared to 1990.

·         Less than 1% of the population aged 15 and above has no formal education, linking education levels directly to poverty rates.

·         A significant decrease of 38 million individuals in poverty was noted in 2021 after a surge in previous years, attributed to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita growth.

·         Approximately 700 million people (8.5% of the global population) live on less than USD 2.15 per day.
Around 3.5 billion people (44% of the global population) live below the upper middle-income poverty line of USD 6.85 per day, largely unchanged since the 1990s due to population growth.

·         By 2030, an estimated 622 million people (7.3% of the global population) are expected to live in extreme poverty, with only 69 million projected to escape this status from 2024 to 2030.

 

13.    IRENA’S REPORT ON  SOLAR POWER GENERATION

·         According to the report titled “Renewable Energy and Jobs Annual Review 2024” released by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation (ILO), 347 GigaWatts (GW) of photovoltaic (PV) capacity were added to power generation globally in 2023.

·         This marks an increase of 74% compared to 2022.

·         As per the report, China alone constituted 63% (216.9 GW) of the new PV capacities added in year 2023.

·         The year 2023 witnessed the largest ever increase in jobs in renewable energy sector i.e. from 13.7 million (in 2022) to 16.2 million (in 2023).

·         Globally, 7.1 million jobs were created in solar PV in 2023(increased significantly from 4.9 million in 2022), which accounted 44% of the world’s total RE workforce.

·         The report has estimated that 1.02 million jobs were created in RE in 2023.

14.    INDIA RANKS AMONG TOP 6 IN GLOBAL 6G PATENT FILINGS

·         According to various studies, India ranks among the top 6 countries globally in filing patents related to 6G technology, indicating the potential influence of India on the 6G standard-setting process.

·         This progress made by India is in alignment with the Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi’s vision to make India a front-line contributor in the design, development and deployment of 6G technology by 2030.

·         According to the official data from MaxVal, a global Intellectual Property (IP) management firm, India has been ranked at 6th spot with 188 6G-related patents, based on the Government of India (GoI)’s data.

·         China emerged as the top player in global patent filings with 6,0016G-related patents, followed by the United States of America (USA) (3,909 patents); South Korea (1,417 patents); Japan (584 patents); and the European Union (EU) (214).

·         Another analysis was made by the UK-based U Switch, a price comparison platform for broadband and mobile services, ranked India at 4th position with 265 6G patents in April, 2023.

·         China (4,604), the USA (2,229) and South Korea (760) have emerged as the top 3 countries in terms of maximum number of 6G-related patents.

 

15.    ECONOMIC FREEDOM OF THE WORLD: 2024 ANNUAL REPORT

·         The 2024 Economic Freedom of the World Report measures how much economic freedom people have in 165 countries.

·         5 top ranked countries for economic freedom in 2022 were Hong Kong, Singapore, Switzerland, New Zealand, and the United States.

·         India Rank is India 84th

 

16.    NASA’S SPACECRAFT EUROPA CLIPPER TO JUPITER MOON

·         National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) launched its Europa Clipper spacecraft under the Europa mission to Jupiter and its moon Europa, one of Jupiter’s 95 known moons.

·         This marks NASA’s 1st mission dedicated to studying an ocean world beyond Earth.

17.    ISSF WORLD CUP FINAL 2024

·         India finished 9th on the medal tally of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSFWorld Cup Final Rifle / Pistol / Shotgun 2024 with 4 medals (2 Silver and 2 Bronze).

·         China topped the medal tally with 8 medals (5 Gold and 3 Bronze) followed by Italy with 5 medals (1 Gold, 3 Silver and 1 Bronze) and Germay with 3 Medals (1 Gold and 2 Silver).

·         ISSF World Cup Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun was held in Dr Karni Singh Range, New Delhi,

·         India’s SonamMaskar secured the silver medal in the women’s 10m air rifle event

·         VivaanKapoor won the silver medal in Men’s Trap (Shortgun) event

·         AkhilSheoran won the bronze medal in the 50m Rifle 3 Position Men final

·         Anantjeet Singh Naruka won the bronze medal in the men’s skeet event with a total of 43 points.

·         ISSF is the world governing body of shooting events at the Olympic Games.

18.    ICC WOMEN’S T20 WORLD CUP 2024

·         New Zealand’s Women’s Cricket team won their firstever International Cricket Council (ICC) 9TH Women’s Twenty20 (T20) World Cup title, by defeating South Africa’s Women’s cricket team by 32 runs in the finals of the ICC Women’s T20 Cricket World Cup 2024 held at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium

·         The New Zealand team (known as Kiwis) was captained by Sophie Devine and South Africa Team (known as Proteas) was captained by Laura Wolvaardt.

·         The winning team (New Zealand) received a cash prize of USD 2.34 million (Rs 19.6 crore).

·         Player of the tournament(POT): Amelia Kerr (New Zealand)

·         Player of the match(POM) (Finals): Amelia Kerr

·         Amelia Kerr became the 1st player in history to bag both the POT and POM in the Women’s T20 World Cup.

·         Suzie Bates became the most-capped player in international matches (334 appearances), breaking Indian legend MithaliRaj’s record (333 appearances).

·         The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, organised by ICC, is the biennial international championship for women’s Twenty20 International cricket.

·         The first edition of the tournament was held in England in 2009.

·         As of 2024, Australia is the most successful team of the event which has won the title six times (2010, 2012, 2014, 2018, 2020, 2023); while England (2009), West Indies (2016) and New Zealand (2024) have once.

·         The 10th edition of the tournament will be hosted by England in 2026.

 

19.    SAKSHI MALIK MEMOIR TITLED ‘WITNESS’

·         Sakshi Malik, former Indian freestyle wrestler, and Olympic bronze medalist, has unveiled her memoir titled “Witnessco-authored by journalist Jonathan Selvaraj,

·         Sakshi Malik won the bronze medal in 58 kg category at the 2016 Rio Olympics (Brazil) and became the 1st Indian female wrestler to win a medal at the Olympics.

·         Government of India (GoI) honoured her with ArjunaAward(wrestling) in 2016; Padma Shri(Sports) in 2017.

·         She has also won the Gold in 2022 Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham, England and 2017 Commonwealth Championships held in Johannesburg, South Africa.

 

20.    TENNIS HALL OF FAME CLASS 2025

·         Maria Sharapova Russian and twins Bob and Mike Bryan (USA)  were named to the International Tennis Hall of Fame’s Class of 2025.

·         Bob and Mike Bryan are celebrated as the most successful doubles team in tennis history.

·         Their career boasts 16 Grand Slam titles, an Olympic gold medal, and a record 438 weeks as the world No. 1 team.
