1.       NAL LAUNCHES ‘SWADESHI’ KAMIKAZE DRONES 

·         The National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) has launched Swadeshi (indigenous) Kamikaze Drones, do-and-die Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) with home-built engines that can power them to fly up to 1,000 kilometres (km).

·         It is also known as loitering munitions which have been extensively used by Ukrainian forces to target Russian infantry and armoured vehicles.

·         It will be around 2.8 metres(m) long with a wingspan of 3.5 m, weigh about 120 kilogram (kg) and be equipped with a 25 kg explosive charge.

·         It will powered by 30-horsepower (hp) Wankel Engine which is designed and developed by the NAL which can fly continuously with a maximum speed of 180 kilometres per hour (km/h).

·         NAL was established by the CSIR in 1959, headquartered at Bengaluru, Karnataka.

3.        ‘AMBASSADOR OF INDIAN ARTS AND CULTURE’ AWARD

·         Indian actor Konidela Ram CharanTeja, who works predominantly in Telugu cinema, was honoured with the prestigious title of “Ambassador of Indian Arts and Culture” during the 15th edition of Indian Film Festival of Melbourne  (IFFM 2024) held at the Palais Theatre in St. Kilda, Melbourne (Australia).

·         Guest of Honour, Ram Charan also hoisted the Indian national flag at Melbourne’s iconic Federation Square during the IFFM 2024.

 


4.       RBI GOVERNOR SHAKTIKANTA DAS RATED ‘A+’ 

·         The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor, Shaktikanta Das has been rated “A+” for 2nd consecutive year in the ‘Central Banker Report Cards 2024’ by the United States of America (USA) based Global Finance magazine .

·         Christian Kettel Thomson, Royal Governor of the Bank of Denmark (Denmark) and Thomas Jordan, Chairperson of the Swiss National Bank (Switzerland) also have been received the “A+” rating.

·         The grades are based on an “A+” to “F” scale with A representing “excellent performance” and F representing “outright failure”.

·         In 2023, Shakitkanta Das was bestowed with the award of “Governor of the Year” at the 10th annual Central Banking Awards 2023 held at London

·         The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has joined Project Nexus, a multilateral international initiative aimed at facilitating instant cross-border retail payments by interlinking domestic Fast Payments Systems (FPSs) through a unified platform.

 

 

5.       JOINT FLAG-BEARERS FOR PARIS 2024 PARALYMPICS

·         Indian para-athletes Sumit Antil and Bhagyashri Jadhav have been named joint flag-bearers for the Paris 2024 Paralympics Opening Ceremony

·         Reigning javelin throw Paralympic champion in the men’s F64 category from Tokyo 2020.

·         Bhagyashri Jadhav:Won a silver medal in the women’s shot put F34 category at the Asian Para Games.

·         India will send their largest Paralympics contingent to Paris 2024, with 84 athletes competing across 12 sports.

 

6.       CHEF DE MISSION FOR INDIA'S CONTINGENT AT PARIS PARALYMPICS 2024

·         Chef de Mission: Satya Prakash Sangwan, Vice-President of the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI), was appointed chef de mission for the Indian team.

·         New Sports: India will compete in three new sports—para-cycling, para-rowing, and blind judo—bringing the total number of sports to 12.

 

7.       VENUE CHANGE FOR 2024 WOMEN'S T20 WORLD CUP

·         The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially confirmed that the 2024 Women's T20 World Cup will be relocated from Bangladesh to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

 

 

8.       2024 HURUN INDIA MOST VALUABLE FAMILY BUSINESSES

·         According to 2024 Hurun India Most Valuable Family Businesses, Ambani Family headed by Mukesh Ambani, is ranked 1st with a value of Rs 2,575,100 Crore.

·         Bajaj family led by Niraj Bajaj, Directors of the Bajaj Group, ranks 2nd with a value of Rs 712,700 crore and Birla family, led by Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairperson of the Aditya Birla Group, ranks 3rd with a value of Rs 538,500 crore.

·         Roshni Nadar Malhotra, representing the Nadar family, is India’s most influential woman leading a family-owned business. The Nadar family is ranked 5th with a value of Rs 430,600 crore.

 

9.       WORLD’S STRONGEST FOOD AND DAIRY BRAND

·         According to the Brand Finance’s Food & Drink 2024 report, Anand Milk Union Limited (AMUL) has emerged as the world’s strongest food and dairy brand with an AAA+ rating for the the 4th consecutive year.

·         The brand value of AMUL has increased by 11% to USD 3.3 billion, with a Brand Strength Index (BSI) score of 91 out of 100.

·         AMUL has improved its ranking from 29th position (2023) to 22nd (2024) position on the list of world’s most valuable and strongest food brands.

·         Switzerland’s Nestle emerged as the world’s most valuable food brand, valued at USD 20.8 billion, despite a 7% decline compared to 2023, followed by the United States of America (USA)-based Lay’s and China’s Yili at the 2nd and 3rd position respectively.

 

10.    HIGHLIGHTS OF 78TH INDEPENDENCE DAY OF INDIA

·         The Government of India has organized the 78th Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort in New

·         Delhi, Prime Minister (PM) of India Narendra Modi addressed the nation  and delivered his 11th consecutive Independence Day speech.

·         2024 Independence Day signified the theme ‘Viksit Bharat@2047’ i.e. transforming India into a developed nation by 2047.

 

11.    WORLD HUMANITARIAN DAY 2024 – AUGUST 19

·         World Humanitarian Day (WHD) is annually observed across the globe on 19 August to pay tribute to humanitarian workers worldwide, who have been killed or injured while helping the most vulnerable.

·         WHD 2024 marks the 21st anniversary of the tragic attack on the United Nation(UN) headquarters in Baghdad.

·         The slogan for the 2024 WHD commemoration is “#ActForHumanity” which calls for protecting civilians and humanitarian workers, addressing impunity, and striving for peace.

12.    SADBHAVANA DIWAS OR HARMONY DAY 2024 – AUGUST 20 

·         Sadbhavana Diwas, also known as Harmony Day, is annually observed across India on August 20 to commemorate the birth anniversary of the former Indian Prime Minister (PM) Rajiv Gandhi.

·         Sadbhavana Diwas 2024 marks the 80th birth anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi. He was born on August 20, 1944.

·         The word ‘Sadbhavana’ means ‘Goodwill and Bonafide’ in English.

 

13.    WORLD MOSQUITO DAY 2024 – AUGUST 20

·         World Mosquito Day (WMD) is annually observed across the globe on 20th August to commemorate the discovery made by British doctor Sir Ronald Ross in 1897 that female Anopheles mosquitoes transmit  malaria between humans.

 

14.    INTERNATIONAL DAY OF REMEMBRANCE AND TRIBUTE TO THE VICTIMS OF TERRORISM 2024 – AUG 21

·         The United Nations (UN)’s International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism is annually observed across the globe on 21st August to honour the victims, support the survivors of terrorism.

·         Theme of International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism 2024 is, “Voices for Peace: Victims of Terrorism as Peace Advocates and Educators”.

15.    WORLD SENIOR CITIZEN’S DAY 2024 – AUGUST 21

·         World Senior Citizen’s Day is annually observed across the globe on 21st  August to honour and recognise the contributions of senior citizens to society and highlight the challenges they face, such as healthcare, elder abuse, social isolation, etc.

·         On 19 August 1988Ronald Reagan, the 40th President of the United States of America (USA), signed Proclamation 5847, designating August 21 as “National Senior Citizens Day.”

 

16.    FIRST-EVER NATIONAL SPACE DAY – 23 AUGUST 2024

·         The first-ever National Space Day (NSpD) is observed across India on 23 August 2024 to commemorate the achievement of the Chandrayaan-3 Mission launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

·         The 2024 theme of NSpD is, “Touching Lives while Touching the Moon: India’s Space Saga.

·         The ISRO–Chandrayaan 3 Team was awarded the Vigyan Team (VT) Award for their contributions to space science and technology.

18.    WORLD'S OLDEST PERSON PASSED AWAY

·         The world's oldest person, Spain's Maria Branyas Morera, who was born in the United States, passed away at the age of 117.

·         Branyas was officially recognized as the world's oldest person by Guinness World Records in January 2023, following the death of French nun Lucile Randon aged 118.

·         Historical Ranking: Branyas was the 8th oldest verified person in history at the age of 117.

·         Jeanne Calment, a Frenchwoman, was the oldest person ever recorded, living to 122 years and 164 days.

·         Current Oldest Living Person: Japan's Tomiko Itooka, born on May 23, 1908, currently holds the title of the oldest living person, according to the US Gerontology Research Group.
