1.       RBI PENALIZES 5 CO-OPERATIVE BANKS FOR REGULATORY VIOLATIONS     

·         The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed monetary penalties on 5 urban cooperative banks for failing to comply with various regulatory directions.

·         Urban Co-operative Bank Limited., Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh: Rs5 lakh penalty for non-compliance with investment norms.

·         Nagnath Urban Co-operative Bank Limited, Hingoli, Maharashtra: Rs1 lakh penalty for failing to transfer eligible amounts to the Depositor Education and Awareness Fund as per Section 26A.

·         Shrikrishna Co-operative Bank Limited, Umrer, Maharashtra: Rs2.08 lakh penalty for non-compliance with loan and advance regulations related to directors and their relatives.

·         Alibag Co-operative Urban Bank Limited, Alibag, Maharashtra: Rs2 lakh penalty for mismanagement of advances, including sanctioning gold loans beyond regulatory limits.

·         The Hindustan Co-operative Bank Limited, Mumbai, Maharashtra: Rs4 lakh penalty for violations including exposure norms and KYC requirements.

 

2.       IRDA OF INDIA FINES HDFC LIFE RS 2 CRORE FOR REGULATORY VIOLATIONS    

·         The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has imposed a penalty of Rs1 crore on HDFC Life Insurance Company for violation of various norms.

·         The norms violated included those pertaining to insurance web aggregators, insurance brokers, insurance intermediaries (payment of commissions) and outsourcing activities.

·         Additionally, a penalty of Rs 1 crore was imposed for irregularities concerning the outsourcing of services by the company.

 

3.       BOOK BREAKING ROCKS AND BARRIERS - SUDIPTA SENGUPTA

·         Sudipta Sengupta, a geologist and trained mountaineer, has penned a memoir titled “Breaking Rocks and Barriers: Memoirs of a Geologist and Mountaineer” narrating her adventures as a geologist conducting fieldwork in remote areas worldwide.

·         Sudipta Sengupta is one of the first Indian women (along with Dr Aditi Pant) to visit Antarctica as part of the 3rd Indian Antarctic Expedition in 1983-84.

 

4.       RBI REVOKES LICENCES OF 78 URBAN COOPERATIVE BANKS SINCE 2014

·         The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has cancelled the licences of 78 Urban Cooperative Banks (UCBs) since 2014.

·         Maharashtra has the highest number of cancellations, with 36 UCBs losing their licences.

·         Cancellations were due to inadequate capital, poor earning prospects, deteriorating financial position, and operations prejudicial to depositors' and the public's interests.

·         In 2024 (up to July), 10 UCB licences were cancelled.

·         Two each in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh.

 

5.       RBI MONETARY POLICY MEETING

·         The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das announced the third bi-monthly Monetary Policy for FY25, August 8, 2024.

·         The RBI Governor-headed six-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decided to keep the benchmark repo rate unchanged at 6.5% and maintain the policy stance of ‘withdrawal of accommodation’.

·         RBI retained real GDP growth estimates for FY25 at 7.2%, and CPI inflation projection at 4.5%.

 

6.       RBI EXTENDS INTEREST SUBVENTION SCHEME FOR AGRICULTURAL LOANS UP TO RS 3 LAKHS VIA KISAN CREDIT CARD  

·         The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has extended the Modified Interest Subvention Scheme (MISS) for short-term loans for agriculture and allied activities available through Kisan Credit Card (KCC) for the financial year 2024-25.

·         Loan Limit and Interest Rates Farmers can avail of loans up to Rs 3 lakh at a concessional interest rate of 7%.

·         An additional interest subvention of 3% per annum is provided to farmers who repay loans on time, reducing the effective interest rate to 4%.

 

7.       MICROSOFT NAMED INDIA'S MOST ATTRACTIVE EMPLOYER BRAND IN 2024

·         Microsoft has emerged as India's most attractive employer brand, securing the top position in the Randstad Employer Brand Research (REBR) 2024.

·         Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is at 2nd Place and Tata Motors at 3rd Place

 

8.       T20 MEN’S ASIA CUP 2025 & ODI MEN’S ASIA CUP 2027

·         The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has officially declared India as the host of the 2025 Men’s Asia Cup cricket tournament in the Twenty20 (T20) format and Bangladesh as the host of the 2027 Asia Cup tournament in the One Day International (ODI) format.

·         In 2015, ACC announced that Asia Cup tournaments, the biennial men’s tournament, would be played on rotation basis in ODI and T20I format.

·         The first Asia Cup tournament in T20 was held in 2016.

 

9.       CO-FLAG BEAR FOR INDIA AT PARIS 2024 CLOSING CEREMONY

·         The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has announced that hockey goalkeeper PR Sreejesh and pistol shooter Manu Bhaker will be the co-flag bearers for India at the closing ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

 

10.    ISRO SELECTED 2 NEW CREW MEMBERS FOR AXIOM-4 MISSION TO ISS

·         Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) announced that National Mission Assignment Board has selected Indian astronauts Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla and Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair, as crew members for the Axiom-4 (Ax-4) mission to the International Space Station (ISS).

·         Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla has been assigned as Prime mission pilot while Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair will be his back-up.

·         Group Captain Shukla and Group Captain Nair are among the 4 astronauts designates for the Gaganyaan mission which is expected to be launch in 2025.

·         The other 2 astronauts of Gaganyaan mission are Group Captain Ajit Krishnan, Group Captain Angad Pratap.

·         In August 2023,NASA and Axiom space signed an order for the 4th private astronaut mission (Axiom mission (Ax-4)) to the ISS.

·         Astronauts SlawoszUznaÅ„ski of Poland and Tibor Kapu of Hungary (Mission Specialist) will fly alongside an Indian astronaut on Axiom.

 

11.    INDIA’S 1ST MULTINATIONAL AIR EXERCISE ‘TARANG SHAKTI’

·         Tarang Shakti (Wave of Power) 2024′, largest multilateral air exercise began at the Sulur Air Base in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu (TN).

·         It is the first multinational air exercise to be conducted on India soil afte61 years.

·         The Tarang Shakti 2024 exercise is being conducted in two phases.

·         The first phase being held in Sular, Tamil Nadu(TN) and the second phase to be held in JodhpurRajasthan 

·         Around 30 countries, including the United States of America (USA), Germany, France, Australia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the United Kingdom (UK), and Singapore, will showcase their fighter jets.

·         10 countries which will participate with their assets, and 18 countries as observers.

 

12.    INDIAN ARMY CONDUCTS ‘PARVAT PRAHAAR‘ EXERCISE IN LADAKH

·         The Indian Army conducted ‘Parvat Prahaar‘ (Mountain Strike), a large-scale strike corps exercise, in the Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh.

·         The strategic military exercise focused on high-altitude warfare and operations, involving various military units and equipment to maintain readiness near the India-China border.

·         Chief of the Army Staff (COAS)- Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi

·         The theme of the Year 2024- Year of Technology Absorption.

 

13.    7TH INDIAN COAST GUARD SUBORDINATE OFFICERS’ CONCLAVE 

·         The 7th Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Subordinate Officers’ Conclave was inaugurated, by Director General Rakesh Pal at the ICG HQ in New Delhi.

·         The Conclave is themed 'Towards an Inclusive Approach'.

 

14.    14TH INDIAN ORGAN DONATION DAY – 3 AUGUST 2024

·         The Indian Organ Donation Day (IODD) is annually celebrated across India on 3rd August to commemorate the 1st successful deceased donor organ transplant, which was also the 1st Heart transplant in India.

·         IODD is annually celebrated by the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO).

 

15.    HIROSHIMA DAY 2024 – AUGUST 6

·         Hiroshima Day is annually observed across the globe on 6th August to commemoration of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima in Japan by the United States of America in 1945.

·         During the World War II (WWII – 1939-1945), the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) Boeing-29 (B29) Superfortress ‘Enola Gay’ dropped the first atomic bomb, nicknamed ‘Little Boy’, over the Japanese city of Hiroshima on 6th August 1945.

 

16.    10TH NATIONAL HANDLOOM DAY – 7 AUGUST 2024

·         National Handloom Day is annually observed across India on 7 August to honour the handloom weaving community engaged in the handloom sector

·         The Day is also celebrated to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement, which was launched on 7 August 1905.

 

17.    QUIT INDIA MOVEMENT DAY 2024 – AUGUST 8

·         The Quit India Movement Day, also known as August Kranti Day, is annually observed across India on 8th August to commemorate the launch of the Quit India Movement in 1942, a significant movement in India’s struggle for independence from British colonial rule, demanding the immediate withdrawal of British forces.

·         8 August 2024 marks the 82nd anniversary of the Quit India Movement Day.

 

18.    INTERNATIONAL DAY OF WORLD’S INDIGENOUS PEOPLE - AUGUST 9

·         International Day of World’s Indigenous People Day is observed annually on August 9.

·         The theme for the 2024 International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples is "Protecting the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact".

·         This day was first observed by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in December 1994.

·         This day is observed annually to recognize the first UN working group on indigenous people meeting in Geneva in 1982.

·         On December 23, 1994, the UN General Assembly observed August 9 as the International Day of World’s Indigenous People Day.

 

19.    NAGASAKI DAY 2024 - AUGUST 9

·         Nagasaki Day is observed on August 9 every year.

·         On August 9, 1945, during the Second World War, the US dropped a bomb on Nagasaki in the city of Japan.

·         The nuclear bomb that was attacked by the US in Nagasaki called the ‘FAT MAN’.

·         This bomb attack suddenly devastated Nagasaki and killed almost 70,000 people during the attack.

·         The US warplane dropped the bomb named FAT MAN in Nagasaki and this led to the surrender of Japan in the Second World War II.

 

20.    WORLD LION DAY 2024, DATE, HISTORY AND SIGNIFICANCE

·         World Lion Day, celebrated annually on August 10th, marks a crucial moment in wildlife conservation efforts.

21.    BOOK - 'CALL OF THE GIR'

·         The Prime Minister (PMNarendra Modi has received the first copy of 'Call of the Gir', a coffee table book on Gir National Park (Gujarat) and Asiatic lions,  written by Parimal Dhirajlal Nathwani, the Member of Parliament (MP), RajyaSabha (Andhra Pradesh).

·         He dedicated the book to PM for being the visionary behind ‘Project Lion and Lion@2047: Vision for Amrit Kaal’.

 

22.    FORMER WB CM BUDDHADEB BHATTACHARJEE PASSED AWAY 

·         Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, former Chief Minister (CM) of West Bengal (WB) and veteran Communist Party Leader passed away at the age of 80 in Ballygunge, Kolkata, WB.

·         Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee joined Communist Party of India (CPI) (Marxist) as a primary member in 1966 and later he was elected to the CPI(M) state committee in 1972 and became a full time member of CPI (M) in 1985.
