1.       VACCINATION PORTAL ‘U-WIN’ FOR PREGNANT WOMEN & CHILDREN

·         The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare(MoHFW) launched the ‘U-WIN’, an online vaccine management portal to captures every vaccination record of all pregnant women and children up to 6 years under the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP).

·         This portal designed to digitises the UIP which is a part of the Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) Program under the National Health Mission (NHM), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoH&FW).

 

2.       NPCI LAUNCHES 'UPI ONE WORLD' WALLET

·         National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has introduced the ‘UPI One World’ wallet, aimed at enhancing the digital payment experience for international visitors to India.

·         This service simplifies transactions in real-time, empowering tourists to explore India without the need to carry cash or deal with foreign exchange complexities.

 


3.       PRESIDENT OF VENEZUELA 

·         Nicolas Maduro Moros has been re-elected as the President of Venezuela for the third six-year term (2024-2030). He has been serving as the President of Venezuela since April 2013.

·         He won the presidential election by securing 51% of the vote with 80% of the ballot votes counted while the Opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia finished 2nd with 44% of the vote.

·         He has been a member of United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) since 2007.

4.       46TH WORLD HERITAGE COMMITTEE MEETING - NEW DELHI

·         The 46th session of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Committee (WHC), hosted by India for the first time, was held at the Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi

·         The 46th session of WHC inscribed 26 new World Heritage Sites viz. 19 cultural, 4 natural, and 1 mixed property and 2 Significant modifications to existing boundaries.

·         PM NarendraModi announced a USD 1 million grant to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre.

·         The Government of India (GoI) and the Government of the USA signed the first ever ‘Cultural Property Agreement’ to prevent and curb the illicit trafficking of antiquities from India to the USA.

·         Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat inaugurated the Humayun’s Tomb World Heritage Site Museum in New Delhi

 

5.       APPOINTMENT OF 9 NEW GOVERNORS IN 9 STATES

·         President of India, DroupadiMurmu, has appointed new Governors in 9  states (Sikkim; Meghalaya; Jharkhand; Telangana; Chhattisgarh; Rajasthan; Manipur (Additional charge); Assam; Punjab; and Maharashtra;) and a new Lieutenant Governor (Lt Gov)of the Union Territory (UT) of Puducherry.

6.       NEW CHAIRPERSON OF UPSC

·         Preeti Sudan, the former Secretary of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW), took oath as the New Chairperson of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). 

·         She became the 2nd woman to head the UPSC after RM Bathew who served as UPSC Chair from 1992 to 1996.

·         She succeeds Manoj Soni, who resigned from the post in July 2024 almost 5 years before his tenure ends in 2029.

·         The appointment was approved by Droupadi Murmu, President of India, under clause (1A) of Article 316 of the Constitution for performing the duties of Chairman, UPSC.

·         The UPSC was established as the Public Service Commission (PSC) in India for the first time in 1926.

·         In 1937, the PSC became the Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC), and in 1950, the (FPSC) came to be known as the UPSC.

·         UPSC is a constitutional body as mandated under Articles 315-323, Part XIV, Chapter II of the Constitution.

·         The Commission is headed by a chairperson and it can have a maximum of 10 members.

 

7.       GANDHI MANDELA AWARD 2020

·         Rigoberta Menchu Tum, the renowned Nobel Prize winner and Guatemalan human rights activist and Victor Gonzalez Torres, a Mexican politician and businessman have received the prestigious Gandhi Mandela Award 2020 which was presented on Nelson Mandela’s 106th birth anniversary (July 18 2024).

·         Menchu received the award in recognition of her lifelong commitment to advocating indigenous rights and promoting peace and social justice.

·         Torre received the Award for his exceptional contributions to healthcare. 

·         According to the Gandhi Mandela Foundation, Gandhi Mandela Award is awarded to the individual who promotes the values ​​of Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela which includes community service, social development and promotion of peace and harmony.

·         The award is instituted on the 150th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation, MK Gandhi in 2019.

·         The award comprises a gold medal made by the Indian Government Mint, a pine wood box, and a certificate.

·         Dalai Lama received the Gandhi Mandela Award for the year 2019 for his outstanding contributions in spreading peace and harmony amongst the world.

·         Rigoberta Menchu Tum was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992 for her continuing efforts to achieve social justice and mutual reconciliation in Guatemala. 

 

8.       INDIA ELECTED AS VICE-CHAIR OF SUPPLY CHAIN COUNCIL IN IPEF INITIATIVE

·         India has been elected as vice-chair of the Supply Chain Council(SCC), one of the three supply chain bodies set up by the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF) partners  pursuant to the Supply Chain Resilience Agreement.

·         The United States of America (USA) was elected as the Chair of SCC.

·         The chair and vice chair of the SCC were elected during the inaugural virtual meetings of the 3 supply chain bodies: SCC; the Crisis Response Network (CRN); and Labor Rights Advisory Board (LRAB)

·         The elected chairs and vice chairs of CRNare : Republic of Korea(Chair) and Japan (Vice Chair).

·         The elected chairs and vice chairs of LRAB are The USA (Chair) and Fiji (Vice Chair).

·         IPEF was launched on 23rd May 2022 in Tokyo, Japan.

·         14 partner countries: Australia, Brunei, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and U.S.A.

 

9.       PM MODI TO LAUNCH WORLD’S HIGHEST SHINKU LA TUNNEL IN LADAKH

·         Prime Minister Narendra Modi will initiate the first blast for the Shinku La tunnel.

·         The tunnel will provide all-weather connectivity from Manali to Leh.

·         The tunnel will be 1 km long and situated at an elevation of 15,800 feet, making it the world’s highest, surpassing China’s Mila tunnel.

 

10.    ISRO ‘LANDSLIDE ATLAS’

·         Wayanad, Kerala, recently experienced a devastating landslide on July 30, highlighting the district's vulnerability to such natural disasters.

·         The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) had identified Wayanad as a high-risk area for landslides based on various socio-economic parameters in a 2023 national-level database.

·         The Landslide Atlas of India, prepared by the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) of ISRO in February 2023, ranked Wayanad 13th among 147 districts in 17 States and two Union Territories based on landslide exposure.

 

11.    EAM JAISHANKAR’S VISIT TO VIETIANE

·         Union Minister Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India (GoI) was on a 3-day official visit to Vietiane, Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) 

·         Dr. S. Jaishankar attended the 57th ASEAN-Foreign Ministers Meeting (AMM) chaired by Lao PDR under theme ASEAN: Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience in Vietiane, Lao PDR.

12.    TIME’S ‘WORLD’S GREATEST PLACES OF 2024’

·         TIME’s The World’s Greatest Places of 2024 featured 3 Indian destinations namely the Museum of Solutions (MuSo), Mumbai, Maharashtra; Manam Chocolate, a chocolate factory in Hyderabad, Telangana; and Naar, a restaurant in Himachal Pradesh.

·         The 2024 list recognised 100 extraordinary destinations to visit and stay. The list compiles places including hotels, cruises, restaurants, attractions, museums, parks, etc, from across the globe.

·         The 3 Indian destinations were listed under the Place to Visit category of the list.

 

13.    WTO-UNCTAD WTP 2024

·         The World Trade Organization (WTO), in collaboration with the International Trade Centre (ITC) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), released a report ‘World Tariff Profiles (WTP) 2024’ in Geneva, Switzerland.

·         India ranked as the second-largest user of Non-Tariff Measures (NTMs) among WTO members in 2023, primarily through the initiation and imposition of anti-dumping duties.

·         The United States of America (USA) took the 1st position.

·         NTMs are policies, other than regular customs tariffs, that affect international trade in goods by altering traded quantities, prices, or both.

·         India’s average tariffs decreased to 17% in 2023 from 18.1% in 2022.

·         Established in 1995, WTO is the sole global organization that governs trade rules between nations.

14.    CURACAO JOINS AS 6TH ASSOCIATE MEMBER OF CARICOM

·         Curacao has become the 6th Associate Member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the oldest surviving integration movement in the developing world.

·         With this, CARICOM now consists of 15 full member countries and 6 associate members.

·         CARICOM, originally The Caribbean Community and Common Market, was established by the Treaty of Chaguaramas executed by Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) on 4th July 1973 and came into effect on 1st August 1973.

 

15.    RBI INTRODUCED NEW PCA FRAMEWORK FOR URBAN CO-OPERATIVE BANKS

·         The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) introduced new Prompt Corrective Action (PCA) framework for Urban Co-operative Banks (UCBs).

·         Its provisions will be effective from 1st April 2025.

·         This will replace the Supervisory Action Framework (SAF), which had been in place since 6th January 2020.

·         As per new framework , capital, asset quality and profitability will be the key areas for monitoring the financial health of the UCBs.

·         The PCA framework eliminates the limit of Rs 25,000 on capital expenditure restrictions that was imposed under the SAF.
