1. UN’S SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT REPORT (SDR)
·
According
to the 9th edition of
the “Sustainable Development Report (SDR)” released
by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), the world is significantly behind schedule in
achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations (UN) in 2015, such as poverty reduction, hunger
eradication, and environment
protection.
·
As
per the SDR 2024 report, none of the 17
SDGs are on track to be achieved by 2030.
·
The
report highlighted that globally, on an average only 16% of the SDG targets are on track to achieved
by 2030.
·
While,
remaining 84% of the SDG
targets showed a reversal of progress.
·
The
report noted that at the global level,
SDG progress has been stagnant since 2020, particularly some SDG
targets are off-track such as: Zero
Hunger (SDG 2), Sustainable
Cities and Communities (SDG 11), Life Below Water (SDG 14), Life on Land (SDG 15) and Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions (SDG 16).
2. CENTRAL BANKING AWARDS 2024

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) won the ‘Risk Manager
of the Year Award (2024)’ at the Central Banking Awards 2024, the 11th edition of the annual awards,
presented by the Central Banking
Publications, a London(the United Kingdom-UK) based financial publisher
owned by Infopro Digital.
·
Mumbai
(Maharashtra) based IRIS Business
Services Limited has also won the prestigious ‘Global Central Banking
Award 2024’ for Technology
Services in London.

3. ‘NELSON MANDELA LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD’
·
Vinod Ganatra, a globally renowned filmmaker and editor from Gujarat,
now based in Mumbai, Maharashtra has become the 1st Indian to be honoured with the ‘Nelson Mandela Lifetime Achievement Award‘ of South Africa for his contribution
to films.
·
He
was conferred with the award at the 7th
Nelson Mandela Children’s Film Festival in Johannesburg, South
Africa for his outstanding contribution to children’s cinema.
·
18 July is observed as Nelson Mandela International Day.
4. WORLD REFUGEE DAY 2024 – JUNE 20
·
The
United Nations (UN)’s World Refugee Day is annually
observed across the globe on 20
June to honour refugees worldwide and recognise the strength and
courage of people forced to flee their home countries to escape conflict or
persecution.
·
The theme of World Refugee Day 2024 is
“For a World Where Refugees Are Welcomed”.

5. WEF’S ENERGY TRANSITION INDEX 2024
·
The
World Economic Forum (WEF) in
partnership with Accenture released its annual report titled “Fostering Effective Energy Transition
2024”.
·
According
to the report, India has been ranked 63rd on the global Energy
Transition Index (ETI) 2024.
·
The
report noted that India has improved its rank by 3 places (India was ranked at 67th spot in 2023)
·
Sweden reclaimed the top spot in the ETI 2024 with an ETI
score 78.4, followed
by Denmark (75.2)
and Finland (74.5)
in 2nd and 3rd rank
respectively.
·
According
to the report, Estonia,
Ethiopia, and Lebanon have
seen the fastest improvements in last 5 years.
6. RBI CANCELS CITY CO-OPERATIVE BANK’S LICENCE IN
MAHARASHTRA
·
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI)
has cancelled the licence of the City Co-operative Bank Limited, Mumbai
(Maharashtra) for lacking adequate
capital and earning prospects and has failed to comply with the requirements
of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.
·
On
liquidation, every depositor will be eligible to receive deposit insurance
claim amount of his/her deposits up to Rs
5 lakh only from Deposit
Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC).
·
About
87% of depositors are eligible to collect their whole deposit amount from
DICGC.
7. PAAVO NURMI GAMES 2024
·
Olympic
and World Champion Neeraj Chopra secured
a gold medal with 85.97m
in the third attempt in men’s
javelin throw at Paavo
Nurmi Games 2024, a World Athletics Continental Tour (Gold level) event in Turku,
Finland (Europe).
·
Finland’s Toni Keranen claimed the silver
medal with a personal best throw of 84.19m, and Oliver Helander (Finland) won the bronze medal with 83.96m.
8. STEPAN AVAGYAN MEMORIAL RR CHESS TOURNAMENT 2024
·
Indian
Grandmaster (GM) Arjun Erigasi won
the title of the 2024 Stepan
Avagyan Memorial 17th-category Round Robin(RR) Chess Tournament held
at Jermuk, Armenia
·
With
this victory, India’s No. 1 Arjun
became the World No.4 with
a career-high rating of 2771.2 Elo.
·
The
live rating list is topped by Norway’s
Magnus Carlsen, followed by the United States of America(USA)’s Hikaru
Nakamura (2nd) and Fabiano Caruana (3rd).
9. 10TH INTERNATIONAL DAY OF YOGA – 21 JUNE 2024
·
The
United Nations (UN)’s International Day of Yoga (IDY) is
annually observed across the globe on 21
June to raise awareness about the benefits of practicing yoga, a
5,000-year-old ancient practice that originated from India.
·
21st June 2024 marks the observance of the 10th IDY.
·
The 2024 theme of IDY is “Yoga for Self and Society.”
10. WORLD MUSIC DAY – JUNE 21 2024
·
World Music Day is annually observed across
the globe on June 21 to
recognises the power of Music.
·
This
day is also known as ‘Fete de
la Musique’, which means ‘Festival
of Music’ in French.
11.
MSP FOR KHARIF CROPS FOR 2024-25 SEASON
·
The Union Cabinet,
chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved an increase in the
Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for all 14 Kharif crops for the
2024-25 crop season, which spans from July to June.
·
Nigerseed and sesamum
saw the highest MSP increase by ₹983 and ₹632, set at ₹8,717 and ₹9,267 per
quintal, respectively.
·
Pulses: Tur
(arhar) received a substantial hike of ₹550, now standing at ₹7,550 per
quintal.
·
Paddy: Raised
by ₹117 to ₹2,300 per quintal for the common grade variety and to ₹2,320 for
grade A.
·
Cereals: Jowar,
bajra, ragi, and maize MSPs have been increased to ₹3,371-3,421, ₹2,625,
₹4,290, and ₹2,225 per quintal, respectively.
·
Pulses: Moong
(green gram) and urad (black gram) MSPs are now ₹8,682 and ₹7,400 per quintal,
increased by ₹124 and ₹450, respectively.
·
Oilseeds: Groundnut,
sunflower seed, and yellow soybean MSPs are now ₹6,783, ₹7,280, and ₹4,882 per
quintal, increased by ₹406, ₹520, and ₹292, respectively.
·
Cotton: MSP
for medium staple and long staple varieties increased by ₹501 to ₹7,121 and
₹7,521 per quintal, respectively.
12.
INAUGURATION
OF NEW NALANDA UNIVERSITY CAMPUS
·
Prime Minister Shri Narendra
Modi inaugurated
the new campus of Nalanda University near Rajgir, Bihar.
·
The modern Nalanda University (NU) is situated near the ancient ruins of
Nalanda, Bihar.
·
It was established by an Act of the Parliament of India with the aim to
revive the historical glory of Nalanda as an international institution for intellectual,
philosophical, historical, and spiritual studies.
·
Historical Context: The foundation for NU was laid during
the 2nd East Asia Summit (Philippines, 2007) and furthered in the 4th East Asia
Summit (Thailand, 2009).

WORLD
HYDROGRAPHY DAY 2024: JUNE 21
·
Every
year on June 21st, World Hydrography Day is
commemorated to promote awareness about the importance of hydrography, safe
navigation, and maritime environmental conservation
·
The
theme of 2024 is “Hydrographic
Information - Enhancing Safety, Efficiency and Sustainability in Marine
Activities”.
