1.              INDIA’S 1ST MULTIPURPOSE GREEN HYDROGEN PILOT PROJECT

·                Geeta Kapur, Chairman and Managing Director(CMD) of SJVN Limited inaugurated India’s 1st multipurpose(combined Heat and Power) green hydrogen pilot project at the 1,500 megawatt (MW) Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (NJHPS) in Jhakri, Himachal Pradesh(HP).

·                The state of the art green hydrogen pilot project has the capability to cater to the high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) coating facility of NJHPS to meet its combustion fuel requirements.

·                The green hydrogen plant will utilise a alkaline electrolyzer of 20 Nm^3/Hr (normal meter cubed per hour) capacity which enables the production of hydrogen gas by splitting hydrogen and oxygen from water.

 

2.              RBI RAISES MINIMUM CAPITAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ARCS TO RS 300CR

·                The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued Master Direction – Reserve Bank of India (Asset Reconstruction Companies) Directions, 2024 

·                Under this, RBI raised the Minimum Capital Requirement for ARCs from Rs 100 crore to Rs 300 crore.

·                The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has re-appointed T. Rabi Sankar as Deputy Governor of RBI for a period of one year w.e.f. May 03, 2024, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

·                RBI has imposed a monetary penalty of Rs 10 Lakh on NABFINS Limited based in Bengaluru, Karnataka which is a subsidiary of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD).

 

3.              RBI RESTRICTS KOTAK MAHINDRA BANK FROM ADDING NEW CUSTOMERS ONLINE

·                Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in exercise of its powers under Section 35A of the Banking Regulation (BR) Act, 1949, barred Kotak Mahindra Bank Limited from on boarding of new customers through its online and mobile banking channels and issuing fresh credit cards.

·                The RBI’s Information Technology (IT) examinations for 2022 and 2023 revealed serious deficiencies in the bank’s IT management, which the bank failed to promptly address

·                The banks barred by RBI in the last three months included Paytm Payments Bank Limited (PPBL) from new deposits, IIFL (India Infoline Finance Limited) Finance from new gold loans, and JM Financial from undertaking any business related to shares or bond funding.

 

4.              NASA HUMAN EXPLORATION ROVER CHALLENGE 2024 AWARDS

·                Indian student teams from the Delhi National Capital Region (NCR) area and Mumbai (Maharashtra) have won awards from NASA‘s (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) 30th Human Exploration Rover Challenge (HERC) 2024.

·                The Krishna Institute of Engineering & Technology (KIETGroup of InstitutionsDelhi-NCR has won the “Crash and Burn” award;

·                The Kanakia International School from Mumbai won the “Rookie of the Year” award.

·                Parish Episcopal School from Dallas, USA secured 1st place in the high school division.

·                University of Alabama in Huntsville, USA won the college/university category.

 

5.              UN RESIDENT COORDINATOR IN INDONESIA

·                Gita Sabharwal of India took charge as the United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator (UN RC) in the Republic of Indonesia. 

·                She was appointed as UN RC of Indonesia by the UN Secretary-General António Guterres with prior approval from the government of Indonesia(host).

 

6.              USAIN BOLT APPOINTED AMBASSADOR OF ICC MEN’S T20 WORLD CUP 2024

·                International Cricket Council (ICC) named Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, an eight-time Olympic gold medallist, as the ambassador of the 9th edition of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 which will be played in West Indies and the United States of America (USA)

·                Usain Bolt currently holds world records in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m with times of 9.58 secs, 19.19 secs and 36.84 secs.

 

7.              WORLD MALARIA DAY 2024 – APRIL 25

·                World Malaria Day (WMD) is annually observed across the globe on 25 April to raise awareness of the global efforts to control and eradicate malaria, a mosquito-borne disease caused by Plasmodium parasites.

·                The theme of WMD 2024 is “Accelerating the fight against malaria for a more equitable world”.
World Malaria Day was instituted by WHO member states during the World Health Assembly (WHA) of 2007.

8.              UNHCR LAUNCHES CLIMATE RESILIENCE FUND

·                The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) launched the UNHCR Climate Resilience Fund, aiming to raise USD100 million by 2025 for protecting refugees and displaced communities from climate change impacts and promoting their inclusion in climate-related measures.

·                Contributions to the Fund will extend UNHCR’s climate action to countries grappling with conflict-related displacement, including Bangladesh, Chad, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Mozambique.

·                It will also support a range of activities in line with UNHCR’s Focus Area Strategic Plan for Climate Action 2024-2030.Four objectives of the plan are: protection, solutions, resilience, and adaptation

9.              INDIA’S 1ST NIFTY NON-CYCLICAL CONSUMER INDEX FUND

·                Groww Mutual Fund, an asset management company (AMC), has received approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to launch India’s inaugural Nifty Non-Cyclical Consumer Index Fund.

·                This open-ended scheme bench-marked against the Nifty Non-Cyclical Consumer Index TRI (Total Return Index), comprising top 30 stocks from sectors like consumer goods and services, telecom, textiles, entertainment, etc.

 

10.          CHINA LAUNCHED SHENZHOU-18 CREW TO ITS SPACE STATION

·                China launched its Shenzhou-18 spacecraft, also known as the “Divine vessel”, aboard the Long March 2-F rocket with 3 astronauts to its space station “Tiangong space station”.

·                Shenzhou-18 was launched from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center on the edge of the Gobi Desert in northwestern China.

·                China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) held the send off ceremony of Shenzhou-18 crew.

·                The 3 member crew of  Shenzhou-18 are Mission Commander Ye Guangfu(43), and former fighter pilots Li Cong (34) and Li Guangsu (36).

 

11.          RESERVE BANK OF INDIA FINES 5 COOPERATIVE BANKS RS 60.3 LAKHS FOR VIOLATING REGULATIONS

·                The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed penalties totalling Rs 60.3 lakhs on 5 cooperative banks for contravention of various regulatory norms.

·                Rajkot Nagarik Sahakari Bank : A penalty of Rs43.30 lakh has been imposed for non-compliance with RBI directions on 'ban on loans and advances to directors and their relatives

·                The Kangra Co-operative Bank (New Delhi), Rajdhani Nagar Sahkari Bank (Lucknow), and Zila Sahakari Bank, Garhwal (Kotdwar, Uttarakhand): Each of these banks has been fined Rs 5 lakh.

·                District Co-operative Bank (Dehradun): A penalty of Rs 2 lakh has been imposed.

·                The penalties are based on deficiencies in regulatory compliance, such as non- compliance with RBI directions

 

12.          ADISESHIAH AWARDS 2024

·                Malcolm and Elizabeth Adiseshiah Trust has announced the annual Dr Malcolm Adiseshiah National Award 2024 for two professors.

·                Professor Surinder S Jodhka, School of Social Sciences, JNU, was selected for the Malcolm Adiseshiah Award (2L & citation) while Vikas Kumar, associate professor, Azim Premji University, will get the Elizabeth Adiseshiah Award (1L & citation).

 

13.          IRDAI REMOVES THE AGE LIMIT OF 65 YEARS FOR INDIVIDUALS BUYING HEALTH INSURANCE

·                To widen the market and foster adequate protection from healthcare expenses, insurance regulator IRDAI has

·                removed the age limit of 65 years for individuals buying health insurance policies.

·                Under the earlier guidelines, individuals were allowed to purchase a new insurance policy only till the age of 65.

14.          NET DIRECT TAX COLLECTIONS EXCEED THE 2023-24 TARGET

·                India’s net direct tax collections grew 17.7% in 2023-24 to hit Rs 19.58 lakh crore

·                Net collections of income and corporate taxes, which make up for most of the direct taxes, in the 2023-24 financial year exceeded the Budget estimates by Rs 1.35 lakh crore (7.40 per cent) and the revised estimates by Rs 13,000 crore.

·                The gross collection (provisional) of Direct Taxes (before adjusting for refunds) for the FY 2023-24 stood at Rs 23.37 lakh crore, showing a growth of 18.48 per cent over the gross collection of Rs 19.72 lakh crore in FY 2022-23.

·                The gross corporate tax collection (provisional) in FY 2023-24 was up 13.06 per cent to Rs 11.32 lakh crore as compared to the gross corporate tax collection of Rs 10 lakh crore of the preceding year.

·                The Net Corporate Tax collection (provisional) in FY 2023-24 at Rs 9.11 lakh crore showed a growth of 10.26 per cent over the net corporate tax collection of Rs 8.26 lakh crore of the preceding year.

 

15.          NAIMA KHATOON APPOINTED FIRST WOMAN VICE-CHANCELLOR OF ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY

·                Naima Khatoon has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) for a term of 5 years, making her the first woman to hold the top post in over 100 years.

·                AMU was established in 1875 as Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College and became Aligarh Muslim University after the Aligarh Muslim University Act in 1920.

 

16.          INDIA PIPS CHINA TO BECOME THE LARGEST ELECTRIC 3W MARKET GLOBALLY IN 2023

·                India overtook China in sale of electric three-wheelers in 2023, at over 5.8 lakh units, according to a report by the International Energy Agency (IEA).

·                Electric 3W sales grew 65 per cent year-on-year
