FIRST-EVER EMRS IN KARNATAKA
·
Air Chief Marshal Vivek Ram Chaudhari,
the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) of Indian Air Force (IAF) has
inaugurated the first-ever Emergency Medical Response System (EMRS) at
Command Hospital Air Force (CHAF) in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
·
The EMRS is a 24/7 telephonic medical helpline for
serving IAF personnel and their families across India.

OXFORD ECONOMICS’ GLOBAL CITIES INDEX
2024
·
According to the Oxford Economics’
Global Cities Index 2024, Delhi has ranked 350th among
the world’s largest 1,000 cities and emerged as the highest-ranked Indian city.
·
New York City,
the United States of America(USA) has topped the 2024 Index followed
by London, The United Kingdom(UK) and San Jose, USA
at 2nd and 3rd rank.
·
As per the index, 1000 largest cities in
the world accounted for 60% of global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in
2023.

SPAIN BECOMES 99TH MEMBER
OF INTERNATIONAL SOLAR ALLIANCE (ISA)
·
Spain officially
became the 99th member of the International Solar
Alliance (ISA) which shows its commitment to promote solar
energy in the energy sector.
·
At present, 119 countries
have signed the ISA framework and 99 countries have signed as
well as ratified ISA framework.
·
In March 2024, Panama became the 98th country
to ratify ISA framework.
·
International Solar Alliance (ISA)is
an inter-governmental organisation jointly formed by India and France in 2015
·
It is a coalition of solar-resource rich
countries which lie either completely or partly between Tropic of Cancer and
Tropic of Capricorn.
·
It was launched by Prime Minister (PM) of
India, Narendra Modi and the former President of France, Francois Hollande on
30th November, 2015 at 21st Conference of Parties (CoP21) to
United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) held
in Paris, France.
·
ISA’s “Towards 1000” strategy
targets mobilizing USD 1 trillion investments in solar energy by 2030,
providing clean energy access to 1 billion people, and installing 1
TeraWatt (TW) or 1000 GigaWatt (GW) of solar
energy capacity.
·

RBI BOARD APPROVES DIVIDEND
OF RS 2,10,874 CRORE TO CENTRAL GOVERNMENT FOR FY24
·
The Central Board of Directors of Reserve
Bank of India (RBI) approved the transfer of Rs 2,10,874 crore (~Rs
2.11 Lakh crore) as surplus to the Central government for the fiscal year
2023-24 (FY24).
·
This is around 141% higher than surplus
transferred in FY23 (Rs 87,416 crore.).
·
This is above the budgeted figure of Rs
1.50 lakh crore in the Interim Budget for FY2025 under dividends and
profits, which includes dividends from Public Sector Undertaking (PSUs).
·
This decision was taken during the 608th
meeting of the Central Board of Directors of RBI held
at Mumbai, Maharashtra under the Chairmanship of Shaktikanta Das,
Governor of RBI.
·
RBI wasestablished
on April 1, 1935, in accordance with the provisions of the Reserve Bank of
India Act, 1934
·
The Central Office of the Reserve Bank was
initially established in Calcutta but was permanently moved to Mumbai in
1937.

WEF FOUNDER KLAUS SCHWAB TO STEP BACK
FROM EXECUTIVE ROLE
·
Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of
the World Economic Forum (WEF), will be stepping down from executive
role and transition to non-executive role by January 2025.
·
Klaus Martin Schwab is a German mechanical
engineer and economist who founded World Economic Forum (WEF)(formerly
known as European Management Forum), non-profit organisation which aims to
improve the states of the world, in 1971.
·
At present, WEF is guided by a Board of
Trustees, who oversees the WEF’s work in promoting global citizenship.
·
The Managing Board of WEF, chaired
by Børge Brende, President of WEF, acts as its executive
body.
·
WEF, received the status of an
international organization for public-private cooperation from
the Swiss authorities in 2015.

WORLD TURTLE DAY 2024 – MAY 23
·
World Turtle Day is
annually observed across the globe on 23 May to celebrate and
protect turtles and tortoises, one of the world’s oldest creatures, and their
disappearing habitats worldwide.
·
The theme
of World Turtle Day 2024 is “Let’s Party” with rescue
favourites Bunkl, Spinner, and Evil waking up from hibernation.
·
World Turtle Day was launched in 2000 by
American Tortoise Rescue (ATR), a nonprofit organization based in Malibu,
California, the United States of America (USA).

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF VESAK OR BUDDHA
PURNIMA 2024 – MAY 23
·
The United Nations (UN) International
Day of Vesak, (also known as Buddha Purnima or Buddha
Jayanti in India) is annually observed across the globe on the Day
of the Full Moon in May. It is the most sacred day for millions of
Buddhists globally.
·
This Day acknowledges the birth of
Prince Siddharta Gautama, who later became known as the Buddha and
founded Buddhism.
·
Buddha Purnima 2024 marks
the 2586th birth anniversary of Gautam Buddha.

SHAW PRIZE IN ASTRONOMY FOR 2024
·
Indian-Origin American Scientist Shrinivas Ramchandra Kulkarni has
been conferred the prestigious 2024 Shaw Prize in the category
of Astronomy.
·
He was born in 1956 in Maharashtra,
India and he is the brother of renowned Indian Philanthropist and
Padma Bhushan Awardee, Sudha Murthy.
·
At present, he is working as Professor at
Ellery Hale Professor of Astronomy and Planetary Science , Division of Physics,
Mathematics and Astronomy at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), U.S.A.
·
Peter Sarnak (USA)
is awarded 2024 Shaw Prize in Mathematical Sciences category.

NEW PRIME MINISTER OF CHAD
·
The Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno has
appointed Chad’s former ambassador Allamaye Halina as the
new Prime Minister(PM) of the Republic of Chad.
·
Allamaye Halina replaced the
opposition leader Succes Masra, who resigned from the post on
22nd May 2024.
·
Deby was sworn in as President of Chad for
a five-year term after winning the presidential election on May 6 2024.
10. INDIAN
COMMONWEALTH DAY 2024 – MAY 24
·
Commonwealth Day (formerly
Empire Day) is annually observed by people all over the Commonwealth in Africa,
Asia, the Caribbean and Americas, the Pacific, and Europe on the 2nd
Monday of March.
·
But, India and certain
other Commonwealth nations observes the Commonwealth Day on 24th May.
·
Indian Commonwealth
Day 2024 was observed on 24th May 2024.
·
Commonwealth Day 2024 was
be observed on 11th March 2024.
·
The theme
for Commonwealth Day 2024 is ‘One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our
Common Wealth’.
·
The Commonwealth is an

equal member states, representing 2.5 billion people—about one-third of the

VENEZUELA BECOMES 1ST COUNTRY TO LOSE
ALL GLACIERS
·
In a grim milestone, Venezuela has
become the 1st country in modern history to lose all
of its glaciers after the Latin American country lost its last remaining
glacier on the Pico Humboldt peak which was downgraded by climate
scientists as an ice field.
·
Venezuela had been home to six glaciers in
the Sierra Nevada de Mérida mountain range, which lies at about 5,000m
above sea level, but lost five of them by 2011.

MARBLE FROM GUJARAT RECEIVES GI TAG
·
Ambaji has
been awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the
Central Government.
·
Ambaji Marble is renowned for its stunning
white appearance and unique natural patterns.
·
A GI, a kind of Intellectual
Property Rights (IPR), is primarily an agricultural, natural or
manufactured product (handicraft and industrial goods) originating from a
definite geographical territory.
·
A GI is a label that is applied to
products that have a specific geographical origin and that have characteristics
related to a particular location.
·
The tag is valid for a period of 10
years after which it is renewed.
13. SULTAN AZLAN SHAH TROPHY TITLE
·
The Japanese men's hockey team made
history when it won the Sultan Azlan Shah Trophy for the first time.
·
Japan triumphed, defeating Pakistan 4-1
in a nail-biting shootout at the Azlan Shah Stadium in Ipoh, Malaysia.
·
The 2024 edition of the famous competition
featured six teams: Japan, Pakistan, Canada, South Korea, New Zealand,
and Malaysia, who hosted the event.
·
Malaysia came in third, followed by New
Zealand, South Korea, and Canada in the final standings.
·
India, a regular participant and five-time
winner of the Sultan Azlan Shah Trophy (1985, 1991, 1995, 2009, 2010), did not
compete in this year's competition.
·
The Indian team elected to focus their
preparations on the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics, which begin on July 26, 2024.
