INDIAN
& JAPAN COAST GUARDS CONDUCTS ‘EXERCISE SAHYOG KAIJIN’

The Indian Coast
Guard (ICG) and Japan Coast
Guard (JCG) conducted a 5-day annual joint exercise, ‘Sahyog Kaijin,’ off the coast
of Chennai, Tamil Nadu
·
This marks the 20th edition joint exercise between the
Japanese and Indian Coast Guards since its institution in 2000.

DENMARK & INDIA LAUNCHED GREEN
FUELS ALLIANCE INDIA
·
Denmark has launched “Green Fuels Alliance India” (GFAI), an initiative to boost
collaborative efforts between India and Denmark in the sustainable energy
solutions sector, at the Tamil Nadu
Global Investors Meet (GIM) 2024, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
·
The initiative is led by the Danish Embassy and Consulate
General of Denmark in India.
·
GFAI: Green Fuels Alliance IndiaThe initiative will play a pivotal
role in advancing the green fuels sector which includes green hydrogen by
fostering innovation, collaboration, and partnerships between Danish industries
and their counterparts in India.

India has set the target to achieve carbon neutrality by
2070.
·
Denmark has topped the global
Climate Performance Index (2024) and is on the path to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

IEA’S RENEWABLES 2023 REPORT
·
International Energy Agency (IEA) released the report titled “Renewables 2023” highlighted the
important finding of the report that the
world added 50% more renewable energy capacity in 2023 compared to 2022
·
Top Countries which contributed maximum in rise of
renewable energy at global level:
·
China led the overall maximum
increase in renewable energy followed by Europe,
United States of America (U.S.A) and Brazil.
·
It emphasized on the deployment
of solar and wind power to reduce dependence on fossil fuels usage in order
to achieve the goal to limit global
warming to 1.5 degree Celsius from pre-industrial levels.
·
The report projected global renewable power capacity is
expected to increase by 7300GW over 2023-2028 periods.
·
As per the report Solar
Photovoltaic and wind energy will emerged as the largest source of global
electricity by early 2025.
·
IEA is an autonomous intergovernmental
organization which provides policy recommendations, analysis and data on entire
global energy sector.

RBI IMPOSES RS.2.49 CRORE MONETARY
PENALTY ON 3 BANKS
·
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed monetary penalties of about Rs.2.49 crore
on three banks namely Dhanlaxmi Bank Limited, Punjab & Sind
Bank and ESAF Small Finance Bank Limited for contravention of regulatory norms.
·
Dhanlaxmi Bank Ltd – Rs.1.20
crores for non-compliance with certain directions issued by RBI on Loans and Advances
·
ESAF Small Finance Bank Limited –
Rs.29.55 Lakh for non-compliance with the directions issued by RBI on ‘Customer Service in Banks’.
·
Punjab & Sind Bank – Rs.1 crore
for Non-compliance
with certain directions issued by RBI on ‘Loans
and Advances – Statutory and Other Restrictions’
5.
RBI IMPOSES MONETARY PENALTY ON FIVE
CO-OPERATIVE BANKS
·
RBI has imposed monetary penalties on five cooperative banks
for deficiencies in regulatory compliance under the provisions of Banking
Regulation Act, 1949.
·
Gujarat-based Navsarjan Industrial
Co-operative Bank Limited – Rs 7 lakh for non-compliance with the directions on placement of deposits
with other banks by primary (urban) co-operative banks
·
Gujarat-based Mehsana Jilla Panchayat Karmachari Co-operative
Bank Limited – Rs 3 lakh for non-compliance with the directions issued by the RBI on ‘placement of deposits with other banks by
primary (urban) co-operative banks’
·
Gujarat-based Halol Urban
Co-operative Bank Limited – 2 lakh for non-compliance with the directions
issued by the RBI on ‘loans and advances to directors, relatives and
firms/concerns in which they are interested’ and ‘placement of deposits with other banks by primary (urban) co-operative
banks’.

Telangana-based Stambhadri Co-operative
Urban Bank Limited – Rs.50,000 for non-compliance with the directions
issued by the RBI on ‘loans and advances
to directors, their relatives, and firms/concerns in which they are interested
·
Tamil
Nadu-based Subramanianagar Co-operative Urban Bank Limited
– Rs.25,000 for non-compliance with the directions issued by the RBI on ‘loans and advances to directors, their
relatives, and firms/concerns in which they are interested’.

SWACHH SURVEKSHAN AWARDS
2023

Surat (Gujarat) and Indore (Madhya
Pradesh/MP) were jointly recognised as the cleanest city in India under category of cities with a population more than 1 lakh.

MD PATRA REAPPOINTMENT AS
DEPUTY GOVERNOR OF RBI
·
Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) headed by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi has approved
the reappointment of Michael Debabrata Patra as
Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for the second time.
·
His tenure was extended by one year with effect from 15th January 2024 or until
further orders, whichever is earlier.

·
On the occasion of 8th National Startup Day 2024 i.e. on January 16, 2024, the results of
the 4th edition of ‘States’ Startup
Ranking 2022 & 4th ‘National Startup Awards (NSA) 2023 ‘ were
declared by Startup India, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal
Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI)

INS
CHEETAH, GULDAR AND KUMBHIR DECOMMISSIONED
·
Three Indian Navy Ships (INS) namely INS
Cheetah, INS Guldar and INS Kumbhir were decommissioned simultaneously
during a ceremony conducted at Port
Blair, Andaman & Nicobar (A&N).
·
INS Cheetah was initially deployed at Kochi(Kerala) and
Chennai(Tamil Nadu) whereas INS Kumbhir and INS Guldar were based at
Visakhapatnam(Andhra Pradesh).

10. NITI AAYOG REPORT ON MULTIDIMENSIONAL POVERTY
·
According to the National
Institution for Transforming India‘s (NITI Aayog)
discussion paper on the National
Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI),
‘National Multidimensional Poverty: A Progress Review -2023,’ India’s
Multidimensional poverty, reduced from
29.17% (2013-14) to 11.28% (2022-23), with about 24.82 crore individuals
emerged from poverty during this transformative period.

At the State level, Uttar
Pradesh leads the list with 5.94 crore people escaping poverty, followed by
Bihar at 3.77 crore and Madhya Pradesh at 2.30 crore.

11. SEBI ALLOWED VOLUNTARY
FREEZING OF CLIENTS’ TRADING ACCOUNT FROM JULY 1, 2024
·
Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) notified that Investors will be allowed to freeze or
block their trading account any suspicious activity is detected.
·
The framework for the same will be laid down on or before
1st April 2024 and will be implemented from 1st July 2024.
·
Trading Account: A trading account is an
investment account which helps retail investors to buy or sell
securities. Trading account is opened with a stock broking firm which, in
turn, provides access to the trading platform of a stock exchange, and allows
the execution of trades on behalf of the account holder.
·
SEBI is the regulatory authority for the capital
market. It was established as a statutory body in 1992 and the provisions
of the SEBI India Act, 1992 (15 of 1992) came into force on January 30,
1992.

12. RBI CANCELS LICENCE OF KARNATAKA’S HIRIYUR URBAN
CO-OP BANK
·
Reserve Bank of India (RBI) cancelled the licence of Karnataka based The Hiriyur
Urban Co-operative Bank Limited as the bank
does not have adequate capital and earning prospects.
·
Upon bank liquidation, each depositor is entitled to a
deposit insurance claim of up to Rs.5
lakh from Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC),
as per the provisions of the DICGC
Act, 1961.
13. TAIWAN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
·
William Lai Ching-te (64 years) of Democratic
Progressive Party (DPP) won the
Taiwan Presidential election with 40.05%
of the vote and has been elected as the President of Taiwan.

Lai Ching-te secured 40.1% of the votes whereas Huo Yu-ih the Mayor of Taipei from
the Kuomintang (KMT) party
secured only 33.5%

14. 8TH ARMED FORCES VETERANS’ DAY – JANUARY 14 2024
·
Armed Forces Veterans’ Day is annually celebrated across
India on 14 January to
honour and recognise the service of Field
Marshal Kodandera Madappa Cariappa, the 1st Indian Commander-in-Chief (C-in-C)
of the Indian Armed Forces, who retired from
the military on 14 January 1953 and
led Indian forces to victory in the 1947 war.
15. 76TH INDIAN ARMY DAY – JANUARY 15 2024

Indian Army Day is annually observed across India
on 15 January to honour
and salute the brave soldiers of the Indian Army who fought at borders and
sacrificed their lives to safeguard the nation from the attack of enemies.

The Day also known as Bhartiya Sena Diwas, recognises the achievements of the
1st Commander-in-Chief (C-in-C) of the Indian Army General (later Field
Marshal) Kodandera Madappa (KM) Cariappa.
