INDIA BECOMES CHAIR OF INTERNATIONAL SUGAR
ORGANISATION FOR 2024
·
India became the Chair of International Sugar
Organisation (ISO), apex international body on sugar and relating products, for 2024 during
the 63rd council meeting of ISO in
London, United Kingdom (UK).
·
India is the largest consumer and second
largest producer of sugar in the world with 15% share in global sugar consumption and about 20%
production of sugar
·
India is the 3rd largest country in the world in ethanol production
after the United States of America (USA) and Brazil.
·
The National Sugar Institute in Kanpur, Uttar
Pradesh (UP) has
extended its influence globally, collaborating with countries such as
Indonesia, Nigeria, Egypt, and Fiji.
·
Ethanol blending percentage in India has increased from 5% in 2019-20 to
12% in Ethanol Supply Year (ESY) 2022–23 (December 2022–October 2023) while the
production has increased from 173 crore litres to more than 500 crore litres
during the same period.
·
The target for ESY 2023–24 (November 2023–October 2024) is 15%.

UNEP’S EMISSIONS GAP REPORT 2023
·
As per the 14th edition of Emissions
Gap Report 2023:Broken Record: Temperatures hit new highs, yet world fails to
cut emissions (again), released by the United Nations Environment Programme
(UNEP) the world must reduce greenhouse
gas (GHG) emissions by at least 28-42% by 2030 to limit warming to 2°C and
1.5°C, respectively.
·
The report warns that if countries fail to reduce GHG emissions, then
global temperatures will be increased by 2.5 to 2.9 degrees Celsius above
pre-industrial levels.
·
The global implementation gap for 2030 is
projected to be around 1.5 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO2e) for unconditional
Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)
·
Under current policies, global warming is projected to reach 3 degrees
Celsius above pre-industrial levels by 2100.

RBI SUPERSEDES ABHYUDAYA CO-OPERATIVE BANK
BOARD
·
Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in exercise of the powers conferred
under Section 36 AAA read with section 56 of the Banking Regulation (BR) Act,
1949 (As Applicable to Co-operative Societies), has superseded the board of directors of Abhyudaya Cooperative Bank
Limited for 12 months (1 year) amid poor
governance standards of the latter.

RBI appointed Satya Prakash Pathak, former Chief General Manager of State Bank
of India (SBI), as the administrator of
the bank.
·
RBI has imposed a monetary penalty on three banks viz. Citibank N.A. (Rs 5 crore), Bank of
Baroda/BOB (Rs 4.34 crore) and Indian Overseas Bank/IOB (Rs 1 crore) for
non-compliance with some of its Directions.

Indian Para Archery team has topped the medal tally with a total of 9 medals (4 gold; 4 silver;
1 bronze) at the 2023 Asian Para Archery Championships and CQT(Continental
Qualifying Tournament) 2024 in Bangkok,
Thailand

South Korea finished in 2nd place with 5 medals(3 Gold, 1 Silver & 1
Bronze), and China finished 3rd with
4 medals(2 Gold, 1 Silver & 1 Bronze).

World No. 5 Rakesh Kumar,
hailing from Jammu and Kashmir(J&K), who led the Indian team secured 3 Gold medals in 3 categories.

Sheetal Devi has won a total of 3 medals, 2 gold and 1
silver during the event.
·
Sheetal Devi is the only female international archer to shoot with her feet.

INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF
VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN 2023- NOVEMBER 25
·
The United Nations (UN) International Day for the Elimination of
Violence against Women is annually observed across the globe on 25 November to
raise public awareness about the global problem of violence against women.

The 2023 global theme of UNiTE campaign is, “UNITE! Invest to prevent violence against women and girls”.

NON-VEG’ DAY

Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh (UP) government has declared November 25 as “no non-veg day” to mark 144th
birth anniversary of Sadhu Thanwardas Lilaram Vaswani.

The day coincides with the observance of International Meatless Day on November 25.

ADB GRANTED USD 170MN LOAN TO MODERNIZE
KOCHI’S WATER SUPPLY SERVICES
·
Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved USD 170 Million loan for the
modernization of water supply services in Kochi, Kerala.
·
Project includes upgrading five water treatment plants (325 Million
Litres Per Day/MLD)) and constructing a new one (190 MLD).
·
Upgrading 146,000 water meters and implementing preventive maintenance
through a performance-based contract.

INDIGO, THE FIRST AIRLINE TO OPERATE FLIGHTS
FROM NOIDA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

Noida International Airport (NIA) has signed a Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) with IndiGo Airlines to become the launch carrier for the
under-construction airport which is scheduled to open at the end of 2024.
·
In 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of Noida International Airport (NIA) at Jewar in Gautam Buddha Nagar district,
Uttar Pradesh (UP).
·
The NIA, a greenfield airport will be India’s first net zero emissions airport.

Irish author Paul Lynch won 2023 Booker Prize for his novel, ‘Prophet Song’ published by
Oneworld.

In 2022, Shehan Karunatilaka won for ‘The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida’,

Prophet Song a dystopian novel is set in a future Ireland that descends into tyranny and civil
war. The story follows a woman’s struggle to protect her family.

Booker Prize is awarded to the best novel of fiction by writers of any nationality, written in
English and published in the UK or Ireland. It was first awarded in 1969

INDIA ORGANISED FIVE-DAY MILLETS FESTIVAL IN
INDONESIA

The Indian Mission to Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in
collaboration with Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare (MoA&FW)
organised the ASEAN-India Millet Festival 2023 in Indonesia.
·
ASEAN:It is an intergovernmental organization of ten Southeast Asian countries namely Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos,
Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
·
India is part of the ASEAN Plus Six grouping, which includes China, Japan, South Korea,

Central Depository Services (India) Limited (CDSL) had become the first Indian depository to hold 10
crore(100 million) active dematerialisation (demat) accounts.

CDSL attained this position by surpassing the National Securities
Depository Limited (NSDL).
·
CDSL is the largest and only listed
depository of India.
·
It provides services to Market participants such as Exchanges, Clearing
Corporations, Depository Participants (DPs), Issuers and Investors.
·
CDSL maintains and services demat accounts of investors or beneficial
owners (BOs).
·
There are only two depositories in India
namely CDSL and NSDL.
·
NSDL:It is the first depository in India which was
established in 1996.
