1.     INDIA’S 1ST GRAPHENE INNOVATION CENTRE TO BE ESTABLISHED AT THRISSUR, KERALA

·         The Digital University Kerala (DUK) has announced partnership with the Centre for Materials for Electronics Technology (C-MET) in Thrissur, Kerala to establish India’s first Graphene Innovation Centre in Kerala.

·         The project will provide a wide range of commercial and industrial applications in biomedical, defense, electronics, energy, and sensors.

·         Graphene is an allotrope of carbon consisting of a single layer of atoms arranged in a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice nanostructure.

·         The graphene has the potential to replace indium and it will lower the cost of OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screens in smartphones.

·         Graphene is the thinnest and strongest material in the world. It also has good chemical stability, high electrical conductivity and a large surface area while being transparent and lightweight.

 

2.     TRANSPARENCY INTERNATIONAL’S CPI 2021 – INDIA RANKS 85TH

·         According to the 2021 edition of the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) released by Berlin-based non-profit organisation Transparency International, India has ranked 85th on the index (CPI score: 40) that ranks 180 countries and territories based on their perceived levels of public sector corruption on a scale of zero to 100 (where 0 implies highly corrupt and 100 implies very clean).

·         Denmark, Finland and New Zealand (Score: 88) have shared the 1st rank followed by Norway (Score: 85) in the 4th rank.

 

3.     RBI CONDUCTS OVERNIGHT VRR AUCTION OF WORTH RS. 75,000 CRORE

·         The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) offered  overnight liquidity to the banking system of India with Rs 75,000 crore against banks bid of around Rs 1.37 lakh crore through variable rate repo (VRR) auction under liquidity Adjustment Facility (LAF) and 25th January 2022 will be the date of reversal.

·         The auction will be conducted on Core Banking Solutions (CBS) (e-Kuber) platform with Rs.1 crore as minimum bid amount for the auction and the allotment would be in multiples of Rs.1 crore.

·         Banks must place their bids in percentage terms with up to 2 decimal places and can also place multiple bids.

·         Repo rate – Repo rate is the rate at which RBI gives loans to commercial banks against government securities.

·         Reverse repo rate – A reverse repo rate is a rate at which RBI borrows money from commercial banks.

4.     PENCILTON LAUNCHES INDIA’S 1ST DEBIT CARD WITH NCMC FOR TEENS

·         Pencilton, a teen-focused fintech company in partnership with Transcorp has launched PencilCard, India’s 1st debit card with National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) for teens.

·         PencilCard is an NCMC – compliant RuPay debit card specially designed for the teenager which will serve as an all-in-one card (debit card, metrocard & bus card) for multiple needs for both online & offline payments.

 

5.     ICC AWARDS 2021

·         The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the 2021 edition of ICC awards where India’s Smriti Mandhana (25) won Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy for ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year.

·         Pakistan’s wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan (29) named ICC Men’s T20I (Twenty 20 International) Cricketer of the Year 2021

·         England’s Tammy Beaumont (30) named the ICC Women’s T20I Cricketer of the Year.

·         Babar Azam (27) of Pakistan named ICC Men’s ODI (One Day International) Cricketer of the Year

·         Lizelle Lee (29) of South Africa (SA) named ICC Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year.

6.     META BUILT WORLD’S FASTEST AI SUPERCOMPUTER ‘RSC’

·         Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced the development of an AI (Artificial Intelligence) supercomputer i.e AI Research SuperCluster (RSC) to train machine learning systems across company’s businesses.

·         It will be the world’s fastest supercomputer once it is completed later in 2022.

·         The RSC includes algorithms on content moderation for detecting hate speech and explicit content on Facebook and Instagram. It will be used to design things or run programs for the Metaverse.

·         Traditional supercomputer’s performance is measured in 64-bit floating point operations per second (FLOPs), whereas AI Supercomputer are often measured in 32-bit or 16-bit FLOPs.

 

7.     NATIONAL TOURISM DAY 2022 – JANUARY 25 

·         The National Tourism Day is annually observed across India on 25th January to create awareness of the importance of travelling and protecting nature.

·         The theme of National Tourism Day 2022 is ‘Rural and Community Centric Tourism’.

·         The Ministry of Tourism celebrates the National Tourism Day 2022 under the aegis of “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav”.

 

8.     NATIONAL VOTERS’ DAY -25TH JANUARY

·         The Election Commission of India (ECI) celebrated the 12th edition of National Voters’ Day (NVD) across India, to spread awareness about the importance of voting, and participating in the electoral process.

·         Theme of 2022 NVD – ‘Making Elections Inclusive, Accessible and Participative.’

·         The ECI launched two publications: ‘Leap of Faith: Journey of Indian Elections’ and ‘Pledging to Vote – A Decadal Journey of The National Voters Day in India’, during the 12th NVD Celebration.

·         The ECI was founded on January 25, 1950, as an autonomous body under the Ministry of Law and Justice, to give every Indian citizen the right to vote in the country’s democratic election process.

·         The Constitution (61st Amendment) Act, 1989, lowered the voting age of elections to the Lok Sabha and to the Legislative Assemblies of States from 21 years to 18 years.

·         Article 324 to 329 of the constitution deals with powers, function, tenure, eligibility, etc of ECI.

·         Election Commission is a 3 member body, consisting of the CEC and 2 Election Commissioners.
