WORLD INEQUALITY REPORT 2022: INDIA’S
TOP 10% HOLD 57% OF NATIONAL INCOME
·
As per the ‘World Inequality Report 2022’ released
by Paris-based World Inequality Lab, India stands out as a ‘poor and very
unequal country, with an affluent elite’.
·
In 2021 the top 10 percent and top 1
percent of the Indian population hold 57 percent and 22
percent of total national income respectively, whereas the share
of the bottom 50 percent has gone down to 13 percent.
·
Income inequality: The average national income of the
Indian adult population is Rs 204,200.
·
The bottom 50 percent of the population in India earns Rs
53,610, the top 10 percent earns more than 20 times at Rs 11,66,520.
·
Wealth inequality: Average household wealth in India is
equal to Rs 983,010.
·
The bottom 50 percent own 6 percent of the total (Rs 66,280).
·
The middle class holds 29.5 percent of the total with an
average wealth of only Rs 723,930.
·
The top 10 percent and 1 percent own 65 and 33 percent of the
total (i.e. of Rs 6,354,070 and Rs 32,449,360).
·
Gender inequality: Gender inequalities in India are very
high.
·
The female labour income share is equal to 18 percent, which
is lower than the average in Asia (21%, excluding China).

ASIA POWER INDEX 2021
·
As per the Lowy Institute Asia Power Index 2021,
India Ranked 4th most powerful country in Asia for
comprehensive power out of 26 countries, with an overall score of 37.7 out
of 100.
·
USA Is at 1st position followed by china at 2nd

JNANPITH AWARDS
·
Assamese poet Nilmani Phookan Jr &
Konkani novelist Damodar Mauzo won the
country’s highest literary award, the Jnanpith award for
their outstanding contribution to literature.
·
Assamese
poet Nilmani Phookan Jr won the 56th Jnanpith Award
and Konkani novelist Damodar Mauzo won the 57th Jnanpith
Award.
·
Damodar Mauzo is 77 years old, from
Majorda, Goa has written many well known books and
his books have been translated into several Indian languages.
·
Phookan is 90 years old from Guwahati, Assam.
·
Jnanpith award is recognized as the highest
literary award of the country for English and other
Indian languages.It is sponsored by the cultural organization
bharatiya jnanpith.
·
The Award is open only for Indian
citizens and is awarded annually.

·
Women’s Tennis Association(WTA)’s World
No.1 Ashleigh Barty, Australia has won the 2021
WTA Player of the Year Award.
·
Emma Raducanu, British professional
tennis player who made her Grand Slam main draw debut at 2021 Wimbledon has been
named the WTA Newcomer of the Year 2021.

Sitharaman has ranked 37th on the
Forbes’ list of the World’s 100 Most Powerful Women 2021
·
Falguni Nayar, founder and CEO, Nykaa was
ranked 88th on the list.
·
Roshni Nadar Malhotra, Chairperson of the HCL
Technology, the first woman to lead a listed IT company in India was ranked
52nd on the list.
·
Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, executive chairperson and
founder of Biocon was ranked 72nd on the list.

BOARD OF ADVISERS FOR IDEA
·
The former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sunil Arora has
joined the board of advisers for the International Institute for Democracy and
Electoral Assistance (IDEA), Stockholm based organization.
·
IDEA is an intergovernmental organization aimed at supporting
the framework of sustainable democracy across the globe.
·
India is one of the founding members of IDEA which currently
has 34 Member countries.
·

INDIA SUCCESSFULLY TEST-FIRES
VL-SRSAM
·
India successfully test-fired the Vertically Launched Short
Range Surface to Air Missile (VL-SRSAM) from
Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur off the
coast of Odisha for neutralising various aerial
threats at close ranges, including sea-skimming targets.
·
The
VL-SRSAM is indigenously designed and developed by Defence
Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for the Indian
Navy.

8.
INDIA SUCCESSFULLY TEST-FIRES AIR
VERSION OF BRAHMOS SUPERSONIC CRUISE MISSILE
·
India successfully test-fired the air version of
the BrahMos
supersonic cruise missile from the integrated test range
of Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha.
·
BrahMos is a joint venture between
DRDO (India) and NPO Mashinostroyeniya (Russia) for
the development, production and marketing of the supersonic cruise missile
which has been inducted into Indian Armed Forces.
·
The missile derives its name from the rivers of Brahmaputra in
India and Moskva in Russia.

The 11th
edition of joint military exercise EKUVERIN between India and Maldives was scheduled
to be held at Kadhdhoo Island, Maldives

10. RBI’S BI-MONTHLY MONETARY POLICY OF FY21-22
·
The Reserve
Bank of India’s (RBI) released its fifth bi-monthly
monetary policy statement for FY22 (April 2021 – March 2022).
·
Policy
Rates: RBI kept the rates unchanged
(maintains status quo) for the 8th consecutive time i.e it decided to continue
with the accommodative stance to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on the
economy.
·
Growth: It retained India’s real gross domestic product (GDP) growth projection for FY22 at 5 percent with
6.6 percent in Q3; and 6.0 percent in Q4. Real GDP growth for Q1 FY23 is
projected at 17.2 percent and for Q2 at 7.8 percent.
·
Inflation: Consumer Price Index (CPI)/Retail inflation was
projected at 3 percent in FY22, with 5.1 percent in Q3 and 5.7
percent in Q4. CPI inflation for Q1 and Q2 FY23 was projected at 5.0 percent.
·
RBI has
decided to launch a UPI (Unified Payments Interface)-based
payment product for feature phone users to increase digital
penetration of financial services and support them to transact digitally
without access to smartphones or reliable internet services.
·
For the
first time in 21 years, the RBI plans to revise norms for investment
portfolios of commercial banks to reflect changes in global standards
on valuation and measurement, and progress in the domestic market.
·
RBI has proposed
to increase the 14-day variable rate reverse repo (VRRR)
auction amounts on a fortnightly basis in the manner of Rs 6.5 lakh crore
on December 17, 2021, and further to Rs 7.5 lakh crore on December 31, 2021.
11. FORTUNE INDIA’S MOST POWERFUL WOMEN LIST 2021

Fortune
India released the list of most powerful women in India 2021 in which Union
Minister Nirmala Sitharaman (62), Ministry of Finance & Ministry of
Corporate Affairs ranked 1st.
·
She is
followed by Reliance Foundation Chairperson and Goodwill Ambassador Nita Ambani
(58) in 2nd position, and Soumya Swaminathan (62), Chief
Scientist, World Health Organization (WHO) at 3rd
12. OLAF SCHOLZ APPOINTED AS GERMAN CHANCELLOR
·
The
Parliament of Germany has appointed Olaf Scholz (63) as the 9th post-World
War II Chancellor of Germany succeeding Angela Dorothea Merkel who retires from
her services after 16 years (since 2005) of tenure as
Chancellor.
·
Olaf Scholz,
a member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) of Germany will lead a
three-party coalition with the Greens (Alliance 90), and the pro-business Free
Democratic Party (FDP).
13. SOUTH KOREAN UNVEILS MODEL FOR HYPERSONIC WEAPON
PROTOTYPE ‘HYCORE’
·
The Agency
for Defence Development (ADD) under South Korea’s Ministry of Defence has
unveiled a model for a hypersonic weapon prototype namely ‘Hycore’ through an
animated video. Its testing is expected to begin in 2022.
·
Hycore is a
ground-launched cruise missile with two-stage solid-fueled rocket and
scramjet engine.
·
Hypersonic
weapons are capable of traveling faster than Mach 5, or five times
the speed of sound, and have maneuvering capabilities.
·
They can be
launched from the surface, from a submarine, or by aircraft, and often have
extremely long ranges.
·
India is
also working on hypersonic missile technology. In June 2019 and September 2020,
India successfully tested its hypersonic technology demonstrator vehicle, which
speeds at mach 6.
14. ASIAN YOUTH PARA GAMES
·
Indian’s
claimed 41 medals at 4th Asian Youth Para Games
(AYPG), Asia’s biggest event held at Riffa city, Bahrain.
·
Over 700
athletes from around 30 countries participated in the event.
·
The 5th
edition of the Asian Youth Para Games 2025 will be hosted by Tashkent,
Uzbekistan.
15. INDIA’S 1ST CDS BIPIN RAWAT DIES IN IAF MI15
HELICOPTER CRASH
·
Chief of
Defence Staff (CDS) of Indian Armed Force General Bipin Rawat, India’s
most senior defence official died
in a helicopter crash near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu.
·
Gen Rawat
was on board an Indian Air Force (IAF) Mi17 V5 helicopter along
with his wife Madhulika Rawat, and 11 other defence personnel.
·
While IAF
Group Captain Varun Singh is the lone survivor in the crash.
·
He topped
during his military training and was awarded the ‘Sword of
Honour’ at the National Defence College and the Indian Military
Academy.
·
He was appointed
as India’s 1st Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) in 2019 who
served till death, and previously served as the Chief of the
Indian Army since December 2016.
·
As per the
new military rules, a CDS can serve till the age of 65 &
the all three Armed Service Chiefs have a tenure of 3-years or 62 years of age,
whichever is earlier.
16. INTERNATIONAL ANTI-CORRUPTION DAY 2021 – DECEMBER 9
·
The United
Nations (UN) International Anti-Corruption Day is observed annually on 9th December to raise
awareness of corruption and of the role of the UN convention on combating and
presenting corruption.
·
Theme of 2021 – “Your right, your role:
say no to corruption”.
