1. FREE ONLINE SKILL TRAINING THROUGH NCS PORTAL

·        The Union Ministry of Labour and Employment in partnership with TCS iON offers free online career skills training through the National Career Service(NCS) project to enhance the corporate etiquette, interpersonal skills, presentation skills and other softs skills of the job-seekers.

·        NCS in partnership with HireMee, online assessment and hiring service provider, offers creation of video profiles for job-seekers.

 

2. UN EXTENDS ARMS EMBARGO ON SOUTH SUDAN

·        The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has extended the individual sanctions, travel ban and an arms embargo in South Sudan until May 2021.

·        An arms embargo is a restriction or a set of sanctions that applies solely to weaponry.

·        This extension has been drafted by the United States (US), which received 12 votes in favour while Russia, China and South Africa abstained it.

·        The resolution will encourage developments in South Sudan’s peace process as the nation is emerging from a brutal six-year civil war that left 380,000 dead and millions displaced.

 

3. FORBES TOP 100 HIGHEST PAID ATHLETES 2020

·        Virat Kohli, Indian Cricket Team Captain becomes the only cricketer and the only Indian to feature in the Forbes’ Top 100 highest paid athletes of 2020.Kohli ranked 66 with Forbes Magazine estimated earning of around 26 million USD (24 million from endorsements and 2 million from salary/winnings).

·        Tennis player Roger Federer Tops the list for the first time with estimated earnings 106.3 million USD.

·        He placed 4th in the 2019 list with the estimated earnings of 95million USD.

 

4. FINANCE MINISTRY APPOINTS PR JAISHANKAR AS MD OF IIFCL

·        The Ministry of Finance appointed PR Jaishankar as the MD (Managing Director) of the India Infrastructure Finance Company Limited (IIFCL) for 3 years.

·        The appointment comes after the recommendation of PS Jaishankar by the Bank Boards Bureau (BBB) on March 15, 2020.

·        Since the post remained vacant for 3 years before the appointment (No one was found suitable from among the list of applicants in 2017.

·        Subsequently, another failed attempt was made in 2018 when Pankaj Jain was chosen).

 

5. ARUN SINGHAL BECOMES NEW CEO OF FSSAI

·        The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), Government of India (GoI), has approved the appointment of Arun Singhal, a 1987-batch IAS (Indian Administrative Service officer) of Uttar Pradesh cadre, as chief executive officer (CEO) of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

·        Mr Singhal, currently serving as Special Secretary in the Department of Health and Family Welfare, will succeed GSG Ayyangar who was briefly appointed to the post.

 

6. IRRAWADDY DOLPHIN POPULATION AT ODISHA ‘S CHILIKA LAKE INCREASED

·        A research project undertaken by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, a public technical and research university located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu (TN),  has helped triple the number of Irrawaddy dolphins in Odisha’s  Chilika lake, asia’s largest natural water reservoir.

·        As per the IIT team involved in the project, the research benefited more than 200,000 fishermen living in 132 villages as now seven times more fish can be caught.

·        Chilika lake is more than four 4,000 years old and extends to Puri, Khurda and Ganjam districts of Odisha.
