1. GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES 4 NEW SCHEMES TO PROMOTE YOUNG SCIENTISTS
i. Central Government launched 4 new
schemes to promote young scientists and researchers in India. All the schemes
focus on empowering, recognising and motivating youth. Teacher Associateship
for Research Excellence Scheme will connect the educators to leading public
funded institutions like Indian Institute of Technology, Indian Institute of
Science or national institutions like Council of Scientific & Industrial
Research to pursue research.
ii. Overseas Visiting Doctoral
Fellowship scheme, support will be offered to 100 PhD scholars for training at
foreign universities/laboratories up to 12 months during their doctoral
research. Distinguished Investigator Award scheme, 100 fellowships will be
offered to principal investigators of Science and Engineering Research
Board/Department of Science and Technology projects.
iv. Augmenting Writing Skills for
Articulating Research scheme aims to encourage science writing.
2. KOLKATA BECOMES 1ST INDIAN METRO TO GET A FLOATING MARKET
i. Kolkata has become the first Indian
Metro to get a Floating Market. The market will be located on a water-body with
boats doubling up as shops. The market, located on the eastern fringes of the
city, was inaugurated by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
ii. The aim is to rehabilitate over 200
shopkeepers from a nearby market that was demolished for the widening of the
Eastern Metropolitan Bypass. The market will host at least 114 boats, each one
accommodating two shops.
3. INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ‘INCLUSION OF PERSONS WITH
DISABILITIES IN THE ELECTION PROCESS’ IN NEW DELHI
i. Election Commission of India hosted
a one-day International Conference on ‘Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities
in the Election Process’ in New Delhi.
ii. The Conference was organized under
the VoICE.NET platform, a common knowledge/resource sharing network for 25
Election Management Bodies and International Organisations. It was attended by
representatives from five Election Management Bodies viz. Australia, Bhutan,
Guinea, Moldova & Zambia and Heads of two International Organisations viz. International
Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance and International Foundation
of Electoral Systems.
iii. During the conference,
representatives from EMBs and international organisations shared their
experiences, initiatives and best practices for electoral engagement, enrolment
and active participation of Persons with Disabilities in ballot exercise.
iv. On the sidelines of the Conference,
ECI signed Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation in the field of election
management with Central Election Commission of Moldova, with National
Independent Electoral Commission of Guinea and also with International
Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance.
4. PUNJAB CM LAUNCHES BENEFITS UNDER 'MAHATMA GANDHI SARBAT VIKAS
YOJANA'
i. Punjab chief minister Amarinder
Singh launched the release of benefits under 'Mahatma Gandhi Sarbat Vikas
Yojana' aimed at the inclusive growth of the distressed sections of the
society.
ii. He appealed to the state's
debt-ridden farmers not to commit suicide since his government was committed to
the total implementation of its farm debt waiver scheme by November 2018.
5. SUSHMA SWARAJ INAUGURATES BHARAT-ASEAN MAITRI PARK IN DELHI
i. External Affairs Minister Sushma
Swaraj inaugurated the Bharat-ASEAN Maitri Park in Delhi. The Bharat-ASEAN
Maitri Park was inaugurated a day before the ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit.
ii. The ASEAN-India Commemorative
Summit will enhance India-ASEAN cooperation in areas such as counter-terrorism,
security and connectivity.
iii. ASEAN consists of the following
countries: Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore,
Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos and Brunei.
6. INDIA, VIETNAM RELEASE FIRST-EVER COMMEMORATIVE STAMPS
i. India and Vietnam released first
ever set of commemorative postage stamps to mark the long-term friendly
bilateral relationships between the two countries.
ii. The stamp was released by AN Nanda,
Secretary, Department of Posts. The two set of stamps released carry picture of
Sanchi Stupa and Thien Mu Pagoda.
7. PADMA AWARDS 2018 ANNOUNCED: FULL LIST OF RECIPIENTS
i. The President has approved the
awards for 85 individuals, which includes 3 Padma Vibhushan, 9 Padma Bhushan
and 73 Padma Shri.
ii. In sports personalities, former
India cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and multiple world champion cueist
Pankaj Advani have been conferred with the third-highest civilian award, Padma
Bhushan.
iii. The 2017 World Weightlifting
Champion Saikhom Mirabai Chanu and former Asian Games gold medallist tennis
player Somdev Devvarman have been conferred with the Padma Shri. The awards are
announced on the eve of the Republic Day every year.
8. NATION CELEBRATES 69TH REPUBLIC DAY
i. The Country celebrates its 69th
Republic Day on 26th January in Rajpath, New Delhi to be resplendently displaying
the country's pride and glory. Heads of ten ASEAN countries are chief guests at
Republic Day.
ii. The family members of Corporal
Jyoti Prakash Nirala (Posthumous) of the Indian Air Force, who died fighting
militants in Kashmir valley, received India’s highest peacetime gallantry
award, Ashok Chakra.
