1.
NARENDRA MODI INAUGURATE ANNUAL CONFERENCE ‘RAJASWA GYAN SANGAM’
IN NEW DELHI
i.
PM Narendra Modi has inaugurated the annual conference – Rajaswa Gyan Sangam,
2017 in New Delhi. He addressed the tax administrators during the conference.
ii.
The Conference have been jointly organised by the Central Board of Direct Taxes
and the Central Board of Excise and Customs.
iii.
The objective of the Conference is to enable a two-way communication between
the policy-makers and the senior officers in the field offices.
iv.
Its aim is to increase revenue collection and facilitate effective
implementation of law and policies in key result areas.
v.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Ministers of State for Finance Santosh Kumar
Gangwar and Arjun Ram Meghwal will also be present on the ocassion.
2.
INTERNATIONAL HINDU CONFERENCE HELD IN NEPAL
i. The 3-day
International Hindu Conference began on 31st Aug 2017. Its aim is to
reinstitute Kathmandu as the global capital of Hinduism.
ii. The
theme of the conference is ‘Emerging spiritualism: Renaissance of Hinduism’. Hindu
scholars, religious leaders, Hindu activists and officials from different
countries including India, the US, Bangladesh, Pakistan and the UK are
attending the conference.
iii. The aim
of the conference is to make Kathmandu the global capital of Hinduism. The
opening of the conference is addressed at the Pashupatinath temple premises.
iv. The
conference will discuss papers on various contemporary issues including,
scientific basis of Hinduism, climate change and global warming.

KONKANI WRITER MAHABALESHWAR SAIL RECEIVES 2016 SARASWATI SAMMAN
i. Prominent
Konkani writer Mahabaleshwar Sail was presented with the Saraswati Samman 2016
for his novel 'Hawthan'. The novel 'Hawthan', published in 2009, captures
cultural lives of traditional potter community in Goa.
ii. He was
awarded the Sahitya Akadami Award in Konkani language for his short story
collection ‘Taranga’ in 1993. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 15 lakh, a
citation and a plaque of goddess Saraswati.
4.
SUNIL ARORA APPOINTED AS ELECTION COMMISSIONER
i. Former
IAS Officer Sunil Arora was appointed as the Election Commissioner. While Achal
Kumar Jyoti is the Chief Election Commissioner and Om Prakash Rawat is the
other Election Commissioner.
ii. Before
taking charge Sunil Arora was the Information and Broadcasting Secretary, and
Secretary in the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.
iii. Senior
bureaucrat Rajiv Kumar was appointed Secretary in the Department of Financial
Services while Anita Karwal was named CBSE chairperson.
iv. Karwal,
a Gujarat-cadre IAS officer, was appointed in place of Rajesh Kumar Chaturvedi,
who will now be the director general of National Skill Development Agency.

RELIANCE FOUNDATION AWARDED RASHTRIYA KHEL PROTSAHAN PURASKAR
i. The
Reliance Foundation was rewarded with the prestigious Rashtriya Khel Protsahan
Award at Rashtrapati Bhawan. Chairperson of the foundation, Nita Ambani
collected the award from President Ram Nath Kovind.
ii. For its
contribution to the promotion of sports, the award went to Reliance Foundation.
Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan also
received the Rashtriya Khel Protsahana Purushkar for its ‘Identification and
Nurturing of Budding and Young Talent’ program.

FORMER HOME SECRETARY RAJIV MEHRISHI APPOINTED AS COMPTROLLER
AND AUDITOR GENERAL OF INDIA
i. Former
Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi has appointed the next Comptroller and Auditor
General of India. Shashi Kant Sharma completes his term as the CAG of India by
September-end.
ii. The CAG
is appointed for a term of 6 years or till the incumbent attains the age of 65
years, whichever is earlier.
7.
RAJIV KUMAR TAKES CHARGE AS NITI AAYOG VICE-CHAIRMAN
i. Rajiv
Kumar has taken over as the vice-chairman of government think tank Niti Aayog. Kumar
replaced Arvind Panagariya, an Indian-American economist.
ii. Kumar
was a senior fellow at the Centre for Policy Research. He holds a DPhil in
economics from Oxford and a PhD from Lucknow University.

INDIAN-ORIGIN CIVIL SERVANT J Y PILLAI APPOINTED SINGAPORE’S
ACTING PRESIDENT
i. Indian-origin
veteran civil servant JY Pillay has appointed Singapore’s acting President on
1st of Sept 2017. He has appointed until a new head of the state is elected.
ii. Pillay
took over from Tony Tan Keng Yam who completed a 6-year term. He acted as
president in May, when Tan made state visits to Europe.
iii. According
to the report this is the first time the office has fallen vacant since the
elected presidency was introduced in 1991.

SAMURAI TETE 1ST WOMAN FROM JHARKHAND TO WIN DHYAN CHAND AWARD
i. On the
occasion of National Sports Day Former India Women’s Hockey captain Sumurai
Tete was awarded Dhyan Chand Award 2017 by the President Ramnath Kovind at a
function held at Rasthrapati Bhawan in New Delhi.
ii. Sumurai
has become the 1st woman from Jharkhand to bag the prestigious national award. She
received statuettes, certificates and cash prize of Rs 5,00,000 each for her
achievements and contribution to Field hockey in India.
iii. Sumrai
is currently working as an office superintendent at Hatia station under South
Eastern Railway.
iv. Chief
Minister Raghubar Das announced earlier, Sumrai Tete as the brand ambassador
for Jharkhand hockey.

UNESCO DECLARES WINNERS OF 2017 INTERNATIONAL LITERACY

i. The UN
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization has announced the winners of
the 2017 International Literacy Prizes on the occasion of International
Literacy Day, celebrated on 8 Sept.
ii. It has
been given to honors excellence and innovation in the field of global literacy.
The awards will be handed out to five laureates from Canada, Jordan, Colombia,
Pakistan and South Africa.
iii. The
prize-giving ceremony will be organized at UNESCO Headquarters and has pledged
to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning for
all. This year’s Literacy Prizes and celebration will focus on literacy in a
digital world.
11.
IMMORTAL INDIA BOOK BY AMISH TRIPATHI
i. Amish, a bestselling
writer who has entertained readers with his mythological series on Lord Shiva
and Lord Rama, has announced to launch his new book “Immortal India” in
non-fiction category.
ii. It was
published by Westland and Tranquebar Press. “Immortal India” brings together
Tripathi’s fascinating style with his distinctively including original thoughts
on a wide array of subjects like religion, LGBT rights, history, and feminism.
