1.
PRESIDENT 3 DAY VISITS TO WEST BENGAL, JHARKHAND AND BIHAR
i.
Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, President of India is on an official visit to Jharkhand,
West Bengal, and Bihar.
ii.
1st April – Kolkata, West Bengal: President was the Chief Guest at 52nd Annual
Convocation of Indian Institute of Management – Calcutta.
iii.
2nd April – Jharkhand: In the capital city Ranchi, President laid foundation
stone of Rabindra Bhawan and Haj House.
iv.
Other functions and ceremonies attended by President in Jharkhand included:
Inauguration of 44 Kms Deoghar – Basukinath Solar Street Light Project, laying
foundation stone of Software Technology Parks of India, Centre and Employees
State Insurance Corporation Hospital.
v.
3rd April – Bihar: President concluded his 3-day tour by visiting Vikramshila
University Monument, Shyama Charan Lahiri Peeth, Museum at Vikramshila and
Gurudham-Bounsi in Bihar.

CENTRE SANCTIONS RS. 98 CR FOR TOURISM SECTOR DEVELOPMENT IN ASSAM
i.
Union Ministry of Tourism has sanctioned Rs 98.35 cr for tourism development in
Assam.
ii.
The information was announced by Union Minister of State for Tourism and
Culture Dr. Mahesh Sarma while meeting Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal.
iii.
The amount sanctioned will be used under the scheme of Swadesh Darshan. The
cities to be developed are Majuli, Tezpur and Sivasagar.
iv.
The 1st installment of Rs. 19.67 cr against the sanctioned amount was released
by the Central government on March 31.
v.
The Tourism Ministry has decided to work collectively to enlist Majuli in the
coveted list of World Heritage Site.
3.
FIRST BIO-GAS BUS WITH FLAT RE 1 FARE INAUGURATED IN KOLKATA
i. Phoenix India Research and Development Group
in Kolkata have designed a bus that will run on biogas produced from cow dung.
ii.
The company has tied-up with Ashok Leyland to manufacture the bus. The 1st bus
will be flagged off on April 7 and will run between Ultadanga in the First
bio-gas bus with flat Re 1 fare inaugurated in Kolkatanorth and Garia in the
south in Kolkata.

MEGA-CONFERENCE OF WORLD PARLIAMENTARIANS HOSTED BY BANGLADESH
i.
The 136th Mega-Conference of World Parliamentarians has begun in Dhaka. The
conference was inaugurated by PM of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina. She will also
release a commemorative postage stamp and launch Inter-Parliamentary Union web
television.
ii.
The main focus of this conference was to provide ways and means to end
political and economic inequality for upholding democracy and human rights.
iii.
The mega-conference was organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad.
iv.
Nobel Peace Prize laureate Kailash Satyarthi was the keynote speaker during the
opening session of the debates.
v.
The 137th conference is to be held at St. Petersburg, Russia on 14-18 October
2017.
5.
TAX EVASION OVER RS 5 CR IS A NON-BAILABLE OFFENCE UNDER GST REGIME.
i.
The Central government has decided to make tax evasion of over Rs 5 cr under
the proposed Goods and Services Tax regime as a non-bailable offence.
ii.
Earlier, the tax evasion of over Rs 2.5 cr was proposed by the Goods and
Services Tax regime.
iii.
This was mentioned in the Central GST Bill as, “if the offences relating to
taxable goods and/or services where the amount of tax evaded exceeds Rs 5 cr,
it shall be treated as cognizable and non-bailable”.
iv.
Cognizable offence: A serious category
of offences in respect of which a police officer has the authority to make an
arrest without a warrant and to start an investigation with or without the
permission of a court.
v.
The Deputy (or) Assistant Commissioner of CGST and SGST has the power to provide
bail to the person arrested under tax evasions.

DAWIT ISAAK TO RECEIVE UNESCO/GUILLERMO CANO WORLD PRESS FREEDOM PRIZE, 2017
i.
An imprisoned Eritrean-Swedish journalist, Dawit Isaak has been chosen for the
UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2017 dedicated to promoting
press freedom.
ii.
Dawit Isaak is a Swedish-Eritrean playwright, journalist and writer.
iii.
In 2016 it was won by Khadija Ismayilova of Azerbaijan.
7.
VIPUL TAKES CHARGE AS NEW CONSUL GENERAL OF DUBAI.
i.
Diplomat Vipul, a 1998 batch Indian Foreign Service officer succeeded Anurag
Bhushan and took charge as the new Consul General of Dubai.
ii.
Prior to this, he was working at the office of External Affairs Minister of
India, Sushma Swaraj.
iii.
He had also served at the India’s diplomatic missions in Sri Lanka and Egypt to
bring peace among two nations.
8.
LENIN MORENO TO SWORN IN AS THE ECUADOR PRESIDENT
i.
Alianza PAIS, Ruling Party of Ecuador, candidate Lenin Moreno won the Ecuador’s
presidential election.
ii.
Moreno defeated conservative former banker Guillermo Lasso who demands a
recount after three exit polls.
iii.
Lenin Moreno was nominated as Presidential candidate by former President Rafael
Correa.
iv.
Out of 94% of voting acts counted, the National Electoral Council declared
Moreno has defeated Lasso by 51% to 49%.

MIAMI OPEN 2017 – AN OVERVIEW
i.
The 33rd edition of 2017 Miami Open presented by Itaú was a professional men
and women’s tennis tournament being played on outdoor hard courts which took
place from March 20 to April 2. All men and women events took place at the
Tennis Center at Crandon Park, Florida in USA.
i.
Roger Federer won Men’s single title after beating Rafael Nadal.
ii.
Women’s single title was won by Johanna Konta. She defeated Caroline Wozniacki.
iii.
Łukasz Kubot (Poland) and Marcelo Melo (Brazil) won Men’s doubles title.
iv.
Women’s doubles won by Gabriela Dabrowski and Xu Yifan.
11.
P V SINDHU WON WOMEN’S SINGLES CHAMPION OF INDIA SUPER SERIES TOURNAMENT
i.
Rio Olympics silver medalist P V Sindhu won championship in India Super Series
tournament.
ii.
She defeated the Olympic champion Carolina Marin from Spain. This was her 2nd
Super-series title win.
iii.
The men’s championship title was won by Viktor Axelsen from Denmark. He
defeated Chou Tien-Chen from Taiwan.
