1.
JHARKHAND CM RAGHUBAR DAS LAUNCHES UJALA SCHEME
i. Jharkhand CM Raghubar Das launched energy
efficient fans and LED tube lights under the ‘Unnat Jeevan by Affordable LEDs
and Appliances for All’ scheme in the
state.
ii. The UJALA scheme is being implemented by
Energy Efficiency Services Limited, a JV under the administration of Ministry
of Power, Government of India.
iii. EESL plans to distribute more than 25
lakh LED tube lights and 1 lakh energy efficient fans to people on upfront
payment. It is estimated that over 5.5 lakh consumers will benefit from the
scheme.

CABINET APPROVALS-FEBRUARY 8, 2017
i. The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime
Minister Shri Narendra Modi approved the ‘Pradhan Mantri Gramin Digital
Saksharta Abhiyan’ to make 6 cr rural households digitally literate by March
2019 .The outlay for PMGDISHA is Rs.2,351.38 cr.
ii. The Union Cabinet chaired by the PM Shri
Narendra Modi has been apprised of the Framework Agreement between India and
Vietnam on cooperation in the exploration and uses of outer space for peaceful
purposes.
iii. The Union government 2017 approved
signing a Memorandum of Understanding between India and Senegal in the field of
Health and Medicine.

2017 DESERT FESTIVAL BEGINS IN JAISALMER
i. The 3 day long International Desert
Festival 2017 started with great enthusiasm in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.
ii. The festival was inaugurated by Jaisalmer
MLA Chhotu Singh Bhati and district collector
Matadin Sharma by flagging-off the shobha yatra.
iii. A cavalcade of 48 camels of Border
Security Force was the major attraction on 1st day of the festival. Famous folk
artists coming from different parts of the country performed as the procession
moved further.
iv. The major attraction of 2017 is the women
wrestling which has been introduced for the 1st time.
v. Other interesting events include camel
polo race, kite flying competition, camel tattoo competition, the panihari
matka race, shan-e-marudhara competition, camel decoration competition, tug of
war, air warrior drill show by the Indian Air Force among others.

INDIA RANKS 43 AMONG 45 NATIONS IN INTERNATIONAL INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY INDEX
i. In the 5th Annual International
Intellectual Property Index released by US Chambers of Commerce’s Global
Intellectual Property Center, India has been ranked very poor at 43rd position
out of 45 countries.
ii. The 2017 International Intellectual
Property Index titled ‘The Roots of Innovation’ revealed that though India
showed slight improvement its performance, still it continued to lag behind the
rest of the world in IP protections.

GOVERNMENT APPOINTS 3 NON-OFFICIAL DIRECTORS ON RBI CENTRAL BOARD
i. The central government appointed 3
part-time Non-Official Directors on the Central Board of the Reserve Bank of
India for a 4-year term after an approval from the Appointments Committee of
the Cabinet.
ii. The Cabinet has appointed economist Ashok
Gulati, economist and former FICCI secretary general Rajiv Kumar and chairman
of services provider Teamlease Manish Sabharwal and as part-time Non-Official
Directors on the Central Board.
iii. Earlier, government had appointed
current Tata chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran,former Gujarat chief secretary
Sudhir Mankad and Mahindra & Mahindra non executive chairman Bharat Doshi
as non official directors in March 2016.
iv. The ACC has also approved the proposal of
Department of Financial Services for appointment of 3 Members on the Local
Board of RBI.
v. Therefore Prasanna Kumar Mohanty
(Southern, Vallabh Roopchand Bhanshali (Western) and Sunil Mitra (Eastern) have
been appointed for 4 years on the local board of RBI.

ABDULLAHI MOHAMED FARMAJO ELECTED NEW PRESIDENT OF SOMALIA
i .Former PM Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo was
declared the new President of Somalia.
ii. Farmajo won the seat after two rounds of
voting and quickly took the oath of office.
iii. The dual Somali-US citizenship holder
Farmajo defeated the incumbent President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
iv. Earlier, Farmajo had been appointed the
country’s PM in 2010 and stayed on the job for 8 months.

NATIONAL DEWORMING DAY: FEBRUARY 10
i. The Natonal Deworming Day, a School and
Anganwadi based Mass Deworming Programme was observed in all the states and
Union Territories of India on February 10.
ii .The day is celebrated annually on
February 10 since 2015 in all the schools across India to stop the infections
due to Soil Transmitted Helminths or worms infections among the children.
iii. NDD is implemented through combined
efforts of Department of School Education and Literacy under Ministry of Human
Resource and Development, Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation and
Ministry of Women and Child Development.
iv. Infections due to Soil Transmitted
Helminths or worms cause morbidity by adversely affecting nutritional status,
impairing cognitive processes and causing complications that may require
surgical intervention.
v. it aims to cover 7.8cr children in private
schools under the one-day programme. Besides, the overall target for 2017 is to
cover 34cr children. About 4.3 cr out-of-school children will be covered
through Anganwadi workers and ASHAs.
vi. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare
has also developed a National Deworming Day app for quick and easier data
collection and reduce the probability of reporting errors.
