1. INDIA’S BIGGEST
DEFENCE EXPO 2016 BEGINS IN GOA
i. India’s biggest ever land, naval and
homeland security exhibition Defence Expo 2016 began in Goa.
ii. It was inaugurated by the Union
Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar.
iii. This for the first time, the Expo
is being held outside the national capital New Delhi.
iv. The 2016 theme is “Rise of
Futurism” and its vision is to make India prosperous by establishing world
class science and technology base in defence sector.
2. SERGEY KARJAKIN
WON 2016 WORLD CHESS CANDIDATES TOURNAMENT
i. Russian grandmaster Sergey Karjakin
won the FIDE World Chess Candidates Tournament held in Moscow.
ii. He
defeated American grandmaster Fabiano Caruana to won the award.
iii. He holds the record for the
world's youngest Grandmaster ever.
3. USAID AND ADB
SIGNED MOU TO DEVELOP SOLAR PARKS IN INDIA
i. The U.S. Agency for International
Development and the Asian Development Bank signed a Memorandum of Understanding
to facilitate 848 million US dollars in funding to develop solar parks across
India.
ii. This agreement will help to finance
the development of solar parks in support of the Government of India’s
renewable energy targets.
4. ZAHEER KHAN
APPOINTED CAPTAIN OF DELHI DAREDEVILS FOR 2016 IPL SEASON
i. Zaheer Khan was appointed as captain of the Delhi Daredevils
team for 2016 Indian Premier League season.
ii. He would replace South African
all-rounder JP Duminy who was captain in the last season.
5. WORLD BANK
APPROVED $250 MILLION LOAN TO SUPPORT ELECTRICITY DISTRIBUTION SECTOR REFORMS
IN RAJASTHAN
i. The World Bank Board approved a 250
million US dollar Development Policy Loan for Rajasthan.
ii. The loan was granted to support the
government of Rajasthan in improving the performance of its electricity
distribution sector under the State’s 24x7 Power for All program.
iii. It will support in:
a.
Strengthening
governance in the distribution sector in the state by giving more operational
autonomy to the utilities
b.
Establishing
targets for reducing the gap between the cost of supply and revenue recovery
c.
Providing
incentives to employees for improving performance
d.
Improving the
operational performance of the DISCOMs
6. ISRO SET TO LAUNCH
RECORD 22 SATELLITES IN SINGLE MISSION
i. The Indian Space Research
Organisation is set to made a record by launching a record number of 22
satellites in a single mission in May 2016.
ii. These satellites will be launched
using ISRO’s workhorse Polar rocket PSLV C34 from the Satish Dhawan Space
Centre at Sriharikota.
iii. The world record for sending
highest number of satellites in single launch is hosted by USA of sending 29
satellites to the orbit in a single launch in 2013.
