1. PRESIDENT OF ACC
·
Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi, Chairman of Lahore (Pakistan)-based
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), was appointed as the new Chairman of
the Asian Cricket Council (ACC),
during the ACC’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held virtually.
·
He replaced Shammi Silva of Sri Lanka
Cricket (SLC),who assumed the ACC presidency in December 2024 after Jay Shah
from India.
2. 6 PRODUCTS FROM TN GETS GI TAG
·
Chennai (TN)-based Geographical Indication (GI)
Registry granted Geographical Indication (GI) tag to 6 more
products from Tamil Nadu (TN) Panruti
cashew, Panruti jackfruit,
Chettikulam shallot (small onion),
Puliyangudi acid lime, Virudhunagar samba vathal, and Ramanathapuram chithiraikar rice.

With this recognition, the total number of GI tag products
from TN reaches to 69 which consolidate its position as
the 2nd highest Indian state in terms of number of
GI-certified products, only after Uttar Pradesh (UP), which leads the county
with 79 GI products.
3. GI RECOGNITION FOR 7 NEW WEST BENGAL
PRODUCTS

Geographical Indication (GI) Registry granted Geographical
Indication (GI) tag to 7 more products from West
Bengal (WB) including "Nolen
Gur Sandesh" (a sweet made with date palm jaggery) , Baruipur's guavas ,Kamarpukur's "bonde" (a type of sweet),
Murshidabad's "Chhanabora,"
Bishnupur's "motichur laddoo,"
Radhunipagal rice, and Malda's Nistari silk yarn.

WB now has 32 products with GI tags.
·
A Geographical Indication (GI) is a sign used on products
that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation
inherent to that location.
4. IMMIGRATION AND FOREIGNERS
BILL, 2025
·
The President of
India, Draupadi Murmu gave assent to ‘Immigration
and Foreigners Bill, 2025’ which deals with issues related to
foreigner and immigration and it was subsequently notified through a gazette
notification, with this, the bill has now become a new law.
·
The new act has repealed
4 British- colonial era laws, including the Foreigners Act, 1946; the Passport
(Entry into India) Act, 1920; the Registration of Foreigners Act, 1939; and the
Immigration (Carriers’ Liability) Act, 2000.
·
The Act has specified that any foreigner who poses threat to national security, sovereignty or the
integrity of India will not be allowed into the country or will be denied the permission to stay in India.
·
As per the Act, foreigners
on their arrival in India are required to register with a Registration Officer.
·
It also contains certain provisions which may restrict their movement, name
changes, and access to protected and
restricted areas.
·
The Act has provision to impose penalties on foreigners
entering without valid passport or other
travel documents with maximum imprisonment of 5 years,
fine up to Rs 5 lakh or both.
5. 6TH BIMSTEC SUMMIT IN
BANGKOK
·
Thailand,
the current chair,
hosted the 6th Summit of the Heads of
State/Government of the member States of BIMSTEC (Bay
of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) in
Bangkok
·
Theme
“Prosperous, Resilient, and Open BIMSTEC” (PRO BIMSTEC).
·
The summit was chaired by
Thailand Prime Minister(PM) Paetongtarn Shinawatra.
·
Prime Minister (PM) Narendra
Modi represented India at the 6th
BIMSTEC Summit.
·
One of the key outcomes of the Summit was the launch of
the BIMSTEC Bangkok Vision 2030, the first-ever vision
document of BIMSTEC that outlines a strategic plan to build a “PRO BIMSTEC” by
2030.
·
PM Modi proposed a 21-point action plan at
the BIMSTEC summit, aiming to enhance engagement and cooperation among member
nations
·
It includes a pilot study on Digital Public
Infrastructure (DPI) needs and efforts to link the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with BIMSTEC payment systems.
·
India proposed to host
the BIMSTEC Athletics Meet in India
(2025); and the first BIMSTEC Games
in 2027 on BIMSTEC’s 30th anniversary.
·
Bangladesh, a founding member of BIMSTEC, assumed the Chairmanship of
BIMSTEC for a 2-year term (2024–2026).

6. AMALSAD CHIKOO FROM GUJARAT
GETS GI TAG
·
“Amalsad Chikoo” (sapodilla), a
horticultural fruit from South Gujarat, became the first agricultural product from the region to receive the
Geographical Indication (GI) tag, granted by the Chennai
(Tamil Nadu, TN) based GI Registry, under the Department for Promotion of
Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and
Industry(MoC&I).
·
It is the 3rd
fruit in Gujarat to get the GI tag after the GirKesar Mango and Kutchhi
Kharek (date).
7. WAQF (AMENDMENT) ACT, 2025
·
President Droupadi Murmu
gave her assent to the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025.
·
The Bill was passed by
Parliament after three days of intense debate in both the Lok Sabha and the
Rajya Sabha.
·
The objective of
the Waqf (Amendment) Act,2025, is to amend the Waqf
Act, 1995, to redress the issues and
challenges in regulating and managing Waqf properties.
·
The Amendment Bill seeks
to improve the administration and management of waqf properties in India.
·
Waqf: It refers to properties dedicated exclusively for religious or charitable purposes under Islamic law,
and any other use or sale of the property is prohibited.
·
It means that the ownership of the property is now taken away
from the person making Waqf and transferred and detained by Allah.
·
Irrevocable: Once the ownership of the property is transferred to
Allah, the property cannot be taken back from Allah, once a property becomes
Waqf, it will always stay Waqf, making it irrevocable.
·
India has the largest waqf holding in the World. Further,
Waqf Board is the largest landowner in India after the Armed Forces and the
Indian Railways.
8. ‘ONE STATE, ONE RRB’
IMPLEMENTATION FROM MAY 01, 2025
·
The Department of
Financial Services (DFS), Ministry of Finance (MoF)
announced ‘One State-One RRB’ through official
notification for amalgamation of 26 Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) across 11
States which include 10 states and 1 Union Territory (UT), effective
from May 01, 2025.
·
Among states that will
see consolidation of RRBs include Andhra
Pradesh(AP), which has the maximum number of RRBs (4), Uttar Pradesh(UP)
and West Bengal(WB) (3 each), and Bihar, Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir(J&K),
Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh(MP), Maharashtra, Odisha and Rajasthan (2 each).

The consolidation process was initiated in 2005,
stemming from the recommendations of the
Dr. Vyas Committee.
9. ALL-WOMEN SAILING
EXPEDITION “SAMUDRA PRADAKSHINA”
·
India’s first
all-women tri-services circumnavigation sailing expedition, “Samudra
Pradakshina”, started from the Indian Naval Watermanship Training
Centre (NWTC) in Colaba, Mumbai
·
This initiative aims
to promote gender parity in maritime endeavors and
showcases the indomitable spirit of Nari Shakti (women power).
·
The expedition will cover a 55-day voyage sailing
approximately 4,000 nautical miles from Mumbai
to Seychelles and back aboard the
Indian Armed Services Vessel (IASV) Triveni, and
will conclude with a Flag-In Ceremony scheduled in Mumbai on 30th May 2025.
·
It involves a 12-member all-women crew from
41 volunteers across the Indian Army (IA), Indian Navy(IN), and Indian Air
Force (AIF) and underwent two years of rigorous ocean sailing
training..
10. STEEL SUSTAINABILITY
CHAMPION 2025
·
Mumbai based Tata Steel Limited(TSL) was recognized as
a Steel Sustainability Champion 2025 by Brussels,
Belgium based World Steel Association (worldsteel) for
the eighth consecutive year since 2018.
