1.       ROMANIA’S INTERIM PRESIDENT

·         Ilie Bolojan has been appointed as Romania’s interim President following the resignation of Klaus Iohannis on February 12, 2025, ahead of a planned impeachment vote led by far-right parties, which controlled 35% of the parliamentary seats.

·         Klaus Iohannis, who served as Romania’s President since 2014, announced his resignation due to increasing political turmoil.

·         Senate speaker Ilie Bolojan will serve as interim president until May’s rerun election.

2.       NEW PRIME MINISTER OF VANUATU

·         Jotham Napat was elected as Vanuatu’s Prime Minister (PM), receiving 50 votes in Parliament.

·         He becomes the country’s fifth PM in four years. 

·         Napat leads a five-party coalition government, which includes his own Leaders Party (which secured nine seats in the January snap election), along with the Vanua’aku Party, Graon Mo Jastis Party, Reunification Movement for Change, and Iauko Group.

·         Vanuatu is a South Pacific Ocean nation ,Capital: Port Vila.


 

3.       IN CHIEFS’ CONCLAVE 2025

·         The Indian Navy (INChiefs’ Conclave 2025 took place at Nausena Bhawan, the IN headquarters in New Delhi.

·         The conclave gathers eight Former Chief of Naval Staffs (CNS) alongside the current CNS, Dinesh Kumar Tripathi.

·         It took place as the IN works towards full self-reliance by 2047, focusing on strengthening its capabilities in the Indian Ocean region (IOR).

·         A book titled “Legacy of Leadership: Naval Chiefs through Time” was released during the Conclave, showcasing the inspiring journeys of former CNSs.

 

4.        ‘FORT WILLIAM’ RENAMED AS ‘VIJAY DURG’ 

·         The Indian Army’s (IA) Eastern Headquarters, Fort William in Kolkata, West Bengal was renamed as ‘Vijay Durg’ to eliminate colonial influences.

·         The fort was built by the British in 1781, originally named after King William III of England.

·         The new name draws inspiration from an ancient Vijaydurg fort in Maharashtra, that was a key naval base for the Marathas under Chhatrapati Shivaji.

·         Fort William became the Eastern Army Command’s headquarters in 1963 after the Sino(China)-India War.

·         ‘Kitchener House’ within the fort was renamed as Manekshaw House, and the South Gate, previously known as St. George’s Gate was renamed as Shivaji Gate. 

 

5.       ZOMATO REBRANDS AS ‘ETERNAL’

·         Leading Indian food and grocery delivery giant Zomato announced that it will rename its parent company to Eternal Limited., accompanied by a new logo.

·         Eternal will oversee four major divisions Zomato,Blinkit, District (Live events),Hyperpure: Restaurant supply chain services.

 

6.       INDIA ACHIEVED MILESTONE OF 100 GW SOLAR POWER CAPACITY

·         Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) announced that India has achieved a historic milestone of surpassing 100 Giga Watt (GW) installed solar energy capacity.

·         This achievement reflects India’s commitment to a cleaner, greener future and marks a major step toward realizing its ambitious target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity by 2030 set by the Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi.

·         As per MNRE, India’s solar power sector has witnessed an exponential increase of 3450% in capacity over the last 10 years, increasing from 2.82 GW (in 2014) to 100 GW (in 2025).

·         Top 5 performing Indian states, contributing significantly to India’s total utility-scale solar installations are: Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu (TN), Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh (MP).

 

7.       INDIA INTRODUCES NEW HS CODE FOR GI-RECOGNISED RICE VARIETIES 

·         Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Minister of Finance (MoF) proposed an amendment to the Customs Tariff Act to assign Harmonized System of Nomenclature (HSN) codes to Geographical Indication (GI) recognized rice varieties during the Union Budget for the financial year 2025-26 (FY26).

·         The HSN code is a numerical classification used in global trade.

·         The newly introduced HS codes are:1006-30-11 for Parboiled rice and 1006-30-91 for White rice.
These codes pertain to rice varieties that have received GI recognition, facilitating their export without the need for special notifications from the MoF.

·         The HS is a globally recognized product classification system developed by the World Customs Organization (WCO).

·         HS assigns specific 6-digit codes to various commodities, facilitating international trade.

·         The HS is governed by “The International Convention on the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System.”

8.       FIRST-EVER BIMSTEC YOUTH SUMMIT IN GUJARAT

·         Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, (MoYA&S) inaugurated the first-ever Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Youth Summit in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

·         The summit is jointly organized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), with New Delhi (Delhi) based-Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Young Indians (YI) as the knowledge partner.

·         India put forward a proposal for BIMSTEC to function as a “Youth Bridge”, a multi-dimensional initiative aimed at empowering young leaders.

 

9.       PM SURYA GHAR: MUFT BIJLI YOJANA COMPLETED ONE YEAR

·         The Prime Minister Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY), the world’s largest domestic rooftop solar initiative marked its 1st anniversary, celebrating the year of empowering households with affordable solar energy and boosting India’s transition to a sustainable future.

·         The scheme was launched by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi on February 13, 2024.

·         It is being implemented by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).

·         The scheme aims to provide free electricity of 300 units per month to 1 crore households in India by March 2027.

·         The rooftop solar installations will be implemented in a phased manner, expected to cross 10 lakh by March 2025, 20 lakh by October 2025, and reach 40 lakh by March 2026.

·         Gujarat topped among all states in terms of highest number  households benefitted from the scheme, accounted 41.47% of the total number of households, followed by Maharashtra (22.79%), Uttar Pradesh (UP) (8.69%), Kerala (7.73%), and Rajasthan (3.14%).

 

10.    INDIA & PANAMA SIGNS MOU TO IMPLEMENT QIP

·         India signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Panama for the 1st time to implement Quick Impact Projects (QIP) in Panama. T

·         He MoU aims to provide tangible benefits to Panama’s local communities and improve socio-economic infrastructure.

·         The QIP will be supported by grant assistance from the Government of India (GoI) and these projects are designed to deliver immediate and visible benefits to local communities in Panama.
