1.       F1 ITALIAN GP 2024

·         Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, a Monacan racing driver, won the Formula One (F1) Italian Grand Prix (GP) 2024 held at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Monza, Italy.

·         McLaren’s Oscar Piastri (Australia) finished 2nd followed by McLaren’s Lando Norris (the United Kingdom -UK) in the 3rd position.

 

2.       61ST NATIONAL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

·         Grandmaster (GM) Karthik Venkataraman from Andhra Pradesh (AP) won the National Chess Championship 2024, the 61st edition of the annual national chess championship of Indiaheld at Gurugram, Haryana.

·         GM Ganguly Surya Shekhar finished 2nd while International Master (IM) Neelash Saha finished 3rd.

·         Along with a trophy, Karthik received a cash prize of Rs 6 lakhs

·         This marks Karthik Venkataraman’s 2nd victory in a national championship.

·         He has previously won the 59th National Chess Championship (2022), held in New Delhi in 2023.

·         With this victory, Karthik is qualified for the Federation Internationale des Echecs’s (FIDE) Chess World Cup, which will take place in 2025.

·         He became the Grandmaster at the age of 18 in 2018.

 


3.       DURAND CUP FOOTBALL 2024

·         North East United Football Club (NEUFC) won their first ever Durand Cup title by defeating defending champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG4-3 in a penalty shootout at the 133rd Indian Oil Durand Cup (2024), which was held at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK) in Kolkata, West Bengal(WB).

·         The winning team NEUFC was awarded the cash prize of Rs 60 lakhs while the runners-up MBSG was awarded the cash prize of Rs 30 lakhs.

·         Kerala Blasters FC forward Noah Sadaoui won the Golden Boot Award as the tournament’s top scorer with 6 goals. He

·         NEUFC Goal Keeper, Gurmeet Singh won the Golden Glove Award

·         NEUFC’s Jithin MS won the Golden Ball Award for scoring 4 goals and providing 3 assists.

·         The Durand Cup, established in 1888, is Asia’s oldest football tournament and the 5th oldest national football competition in the world.

 

4.       PARIS PARALYMPICS 2024

·         India sent a total of 84 athletes

·         India won 29 medals, including 7 golds, 9 silvers, and 13 bronzes.

5.       WORLD DEAF SHOOTING CHAMPIONSHIP

·         Dhanush Srikanth won three gold medals for India at the World Deaf Shooting Championship in Hanover, Germany.

·         He won the individual gold in the men's air rifle category, setting two world records in the process.

·         Dhanush secured gold in the 10m mixed team event alongside Mahit Sandhu and in the 10m air rifle men's team event with Saini and Vania, setting world records in both qualifications and finals (628.8).

·         Dhanush Srikanth and Mahit Sandhu secured the gold medal in the mixed air rifle event

 

6.       NEW SELECTOR FOR MEN'S CRICKET TEAM

·         The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed Ajay Ratra, a former India wicketkeeper, as a selector for the men's cricket team.

·         As per the convention, each of the five selectors represents a different zone. Ratra will represent the North Zone in the committee, which is headed by Ajit Agarkar.

 

7.       "RESET" PROGRAMME TO EMPOWER RETIRED SPORTSPERSONS

·         Union Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya launched the "Retired Sportsperson Empowerment Training" (RESET) Programme on National Sports Day in New Delhi.

·         The programme aims to empower retired athletes by providing them with the necessary knowledge, skills, and opportunities to enhance their employability and career development.

·         RESET Programme will serve as a bridge between generations, enabling retired athletes to share their rich experiences with the new generation of aspiring athletes.

·         Retired sportspersons aged 20-50 years who have won international medals, participated in international events, or have been national/state medallists in competitions recognized by National Sports Federations, the Indian Olympic Association, or the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports are eligible to apply.

·         The programme will cater to two levels of educational qualifications: Class 12th and above and Class 11th and below.

 

8.       RBI SCHEME FOR TRADING AND SETTLEMENT OF SOVEREIGN GREEN BONDS IN IFSC

·         The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) launched a “Scheme for Trading and Settlement of Sovereign Green Bonds (SGrBs) in International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) in India” in exercise of its powers conferred under Section 45W of the RBI Act, 1934

·         The scheme aims to facilitate investments in SGrBs issued by the Government of India (GoI) to eligible foreign investors in the IFSC.

·         SGrBs were first issued in January 2023 as part of the government’s initiative to promote sustainable finance and environmental projects.

·         Persons resident outside India as defined in Section 2(w) of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), 1999, that are eligible to invest in the IFSC.

·         Participants must comply with the Government Securities Act, 2006, the Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999, and related RBI regulations.

·         Investors eligible for the domestic market cannot transfer securities between onshore and IFSC demat accounts.

·         IBUs (IFSC Banking Units: banking units set up in the IFSC) are restricted from participating in primary auctions but can engage in secondary market trades with investors.

·         Any open positions due to settlement failures must be closed out on a T+0 basis (same-day transaction settlement) by reversing trades with the parent bank or its branch/subsidiary in India

9.       SEBI REVISED ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR ENTRY, EXIT OF STOCKS IN F&O SEGMENT

·         The Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI) revised the criteria for entry and exit of stocks in the Futures and Options (F&O) or derivatives segment to enhance market stability by ensuring only actively traded and financially robust stocks participate in the derivatives segment.

·         The circular is effective immediately, and 6 month gestation period has been granted to existing stocks to meet the requirements of new norms.

·         As per the revised guidelines, Median Quarter Sigma Order Size (MQSOS), MQSOS over the previous 6 months, on a rolling basis has been increased from Rs 25 lakhs to Rs 75 lakhs.

·         SEBI has increased Market Wide Position Limit (MWPL) of stocks over the previous 6 months, from the existing limit of Rs 500 crore to Rs 1500 crore.

10.    RBI PENALTY ON UCO BANK AND CENT BANK HOME FINANCE LIMITED    

·         The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a monetary penalty of Rs 2.68 crore on UCO Bank.

§  For non-compliance with RBI directions related to: Interest Rate on Advances,Opening of Current Accounts by Banks (Need for Discipline),Interest Rate on Deposits

·         RBI has also imposed a penalty of Rs 2.1 lakh on Cent Bank Home Finance Limited.

·         For Non-compliance with certain Know Your Customer (KYC) directions provisions.

 

11.    INCREASE IN PRIVATE SECTOR BANKS' CREDIT SHARE IN JUNE 2024

·         According to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s) quarterly BSR data, the share of public sector banks (PSBs) in total credit continued to decline and stood at 53.1% in June 2024 (55.8% a year ago) with concomitant rise for private sector banks (PvBs).

·         The share of PvBs in total credit increased to 46.9% in June 2024, up from 36.5% in March 2021, highlighting their growing market share.

·         The share of scheduled commercial banks (SCBs) deposits offering 7% and above interest rates increased to 66.9% in June 2024, compared to 45.4% a year earlier.

·         The share of savings deposits in total deposits decreased to 29.8% in June 2024 from 30.1% in the previous quarter and 31.8% a year ago.

·         Year-on-year (YoY) bank credit growth slowed slightly to 15% in June 2024, net of the HDFC-HDFC Bank merger, from 15.6% in the previous year.

·         Year-on-year (YoY) growth in bank deposits moderated to 11.7% in June 2024, net of merger (12.2% including the impact of merger), down from 13.1% (13.7% including merger) a quarter earlier.

·         The share of the private corporate sector in total bank credit increased to 26.4% in June 2024 from 25.7% a year ago.

 

12.    GOVERNMENT EXTENDS INTEREST EQUALISATION SCHEME FOR EXPORTERS

·         The government has extended the Interest Equalisation Scheme on pre- and post-shipment rupee export credit by one more month, now valid until September 30, 2024.

·         This extension aims to support the country's outbound shipments.

·         The scheme, which offers interest benefits to exporters, was initially set to expire on August 31, 2024.

·         On December 8, 2023, the Union Cabinet approved an additional allocation of Rs 2,500 crore for the continuation of the scheme up to June 30, 2024.

·         This additional outlay is above the current allocation of Rs 9,538 crore and was necessary to bridge the funding gap for the scheme's continuation.

·         The Interest Equalisation Scheme was launched on April 1, 2015, initially valid for five years until March 31, 2020. It has since been extended multiple times, including during the Covid-19 pandemic.

·         The scheme is fund-limited with a cap of Rs 10 crore per annum per Import Export Code (IEC) for individual exporters.

·         India's exports, after remaining positive for three months, saw a contraction of 1.5% to USD 33.98 billion in July.

·         Concurrently, the trade deficit widened to USD 23.5 billion.

 

13.    INDIA'S DECISION TO RETAIN CURRENT TAX STRUCTURE FOR ELECTRIC & HYBRID VEHICLES

·         The Indian government has decided to retain the current tax structure for electric and hybrid vehicles for an extended period.

·         Electric cars will continue to be taxed at a lower rate of 5%, whereas hybrid cars will face a higher tax rate of 48%.

·         The government's stance aligns with its broader goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2070.

 

14.    WORLD COCONUT DAY 2024 – SEPTEMBER 2

·         World Coconut Day is annually observed across the globe on 2 September to highlight the importance of coconuts and their contributions to agriculture, industry, cuisine, etc.

·         The 2024 theme of World Coconut Day is, “Coconut for a Circular Economy: Building Partnership for Maximum Value.”

·         The Day marks the foundation of the International Coconut Community (ICC), (formerly the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community (APCC), in 1969, with India as a founding member.

15.    SKYSCRAPER DAY 2024: SEPTEMBER 3

·         Skyscraper Day is celebrated on September 3 every year.

·         The day marks the birth anniversary of Louis H. Sullivan, known as the 'father of modern skyscrapers'.

·         The world's first skyscraper was the Home Insurance Building in Chicago, completed in 1885.

·         The term "skyscraper" was first used in the 19th century to describe buildings over 10 stories tall.

 

16.    NATIONAL TEACHERS’ DAY 2024 – SEPTEMBER 5

·         National Teachers’ Day is annually observed across India on 5 September to commemorate the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a great philosopher and scholar, who served as the 1st Vice-President and the 2nd President of Independent India.

·         The 1st National Teachers’ Day was observed on 5 September 1962

·         On the occasion of National Teachers’ Day 2024, President Droupadi Murmu conferred the National Teachers’  Award  2024  (NTA 2024) to 82 recipients, at Vigyan Bhawan, in New Delhi, Delhi.

 

17.    INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY 2024- SEPTEMBER 8

·         UNESCO officially declared 8th September as International Literacy Day during its 14th General Conference in 1967
