THE STATE OF THE WORLD’S FOREST 2024-FAO
·
According to
the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO)’s report“The State of the World’s Forest 2024(SOFO
2024): forest-sector innovations towards a more sustainable future”,India secured 3rd spot among the top 10 countries with most significant forest area
gains during 2010 to 2020 period.
·
India has
gained 2.66 lakh hectares
(ha) of forest area annually from 2010 to 2020.
·
While, China topped among the top 10 countries with the maximum forest area
gainof 19.37 lakh ha, followed
by Australia with forest area
gain of 4.46 lakh ha.
·
The report
was released at the 27th session of the Committee on Forestry (COFO) held at FAO headquarters in
Rome, Italy.
·
The theme of COFO 2024 is “Accelerating
forest solutions through innovation.”
·
FAOIt is of the specialized agencies of United Nations (UN), to make
international efforts to combat hunger and to achieve food security for all.

Indian fencer Shreya Gupta, hailing from Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) won
the bronze medal in the Sabre category at the Commonwealth
Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships (CJCFC) 2024 held in Christchurch, New
Zealand
·
She
previously won 2 bronze
medals in the team events of
CJCFC held in 2018 (Newcastle, the United Kingdom – UK) and in 2022 (London, UK).

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, an Australian
racing driver won his first Formula
1 (F1) title by winning the Hungarian
Grand Prix (GP) 2024 held
at the Hungaroring in Budapest, Hungary.

McLaren’s Lando Norris, a British-Belgian racing driver,
finished 2nd followed
by Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, a
British racing driver, who finished 3rd.

FRENCH ALPS TO HOST 2030 OLYMPIC AND
PARALYMPIC WINTER GAMES

During the
142nd International Olympic Committee (IOC)
Session held in Paris, France, IOC
members elected French Alps (known
as Alpesfrançaises) in France as
the host of the XXVI Olympic and
Paralympic Winter Games 2030, and Salt Lake City (SLC)-Utah of the United States of America (USA) as the host of the XXVII Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games
2034.
·
French Alps 2030: delegation was led by Emmanuel Macron,
President of France, and the games will be held in the 2 regions namely
Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.

NATIONAL FLAG ADOPTION DAY 2024 – JULY 22
·
National Flag Adoption Day is annually observed across India on July 22 to commemorate the adoption of the Tricolour (India’s National Flag)
by the Constituent Assembly of India on July
22, 1947.
·
The first
Indian flag was designed by Pingali Venkayya, a freedom
fighter from Andhra Pradesh (AP).
·
The flag
featured a horizontal tricolour of red,
yellow, and green, with a white crescent and star in the centre.
·
In
1921, Mahatma Gandhi proposed
a new design featuring a spinning wheel (charkha)
to symbolise progress and it also included the tricolour of saffron, white, and
green.
·
The Ashoka Chakra replaced the spinning wheel, or “Charkha,” .
·
This change
was suggested by Badr-ud-Din
Tyabji .
·
The Indian
National Congress (INC) formally adopted the tricolour flag as
its official flag, representing the unity and diversity of India’s freedom movement in 1931.
·
On July 22,
1947, the Constituent Assembly of India chaired by Dr.Rajendra Prasad adopted the National flag
featuring the tricolour of saffron,
white, and green with the Ashoka Chakra (a 24-spoke wheel) in navy blue at its centre, which came
just before India’s independence on
August 15, 1947.
·
Indian
National Flag is known as the ‘Tiranga’ or
‘Tricolor’, which symbolises India’s
independence, sovereignty, and unity.
·
Saffron (Kesari) – Represents courage, sacrifice, and strength,White (Shwet)- Signifies peace, truth, and purity,Green (Harit) – Signifies prosperity,
fertility, and growth,Ashoka Chakra
– Represents the Buddhist concept Wheel of Law (DharmaChakra).
·
The ratio of the length to the height (width)
of the Flag shall be 3:2.
·
On January
26 2002, the Flag Code of India was modified and allowed the citizens of India
to hoist them in their homes, offices on any day and not just on National Day
as was the case earlier.
·
In 1906, Pingali Venkayya hoisted the Indian National flag for the
first time in India at the Parsee Bagan Square in Calcutta (now Kolkata, West
Bengal-WB).

WORLD BRAIN DAY 2024 – JULY 22
·
World Brain Day (WBD) is annually observed across the
globe on 22 July, to raise
awareness and promote education for brain health and neurological disorders
that affect individuals and prevent brain diseases worldwide.
·
The theme/tagline of World Brain Day 2024
is “Brain Health and Prevention:
Protecting Our Future”.
·
The
date 22 July marks
the establishment of
the WFN in 1957, in Brussels, Belgium, as an association of neurological member
societies, and the crafting of the WFN’s first constitution.

·
National Broadcasting Day is annually observed across India on 23 July to commemorate the establishment of the Indian Broadcasting
Company (IBC), a Bombay (now
Mumbai, Maharashtra)-based private radio station, becoming the 1st radio company in India, which came
into existence on 23 July 1927.
·
2024 marks
the 97th anniversary of
establishing the All India Radio (AIR),
formerly IBC.
·
Prasar Bharati, India’s
Public Service Broadcaster, was established under the Prasar Bharati
Act of 1990 and came into existence on 23rd November 1997.

10. INCOME
TAX DAY 2024 – JULY 24
·
Income Tax Day or Aaykar Diwas is
annually observed across India on 24
July to commemorates the introduction of Income Tax (IT) in India in 1860.
·
In 2010, the Government of India (GoI)
officially designated 24 July as Income Tax Day to honour the 150th anniversary
of the introduction of the IT
system in India.
·
The CBDT is the apex policy-making body for the IT department and is a part of
the Department of Revenue in the Ministry of Finance (MoF).
·
It came into
effect in 1964, functioning under the Central Board of Revenue Act of 1963.

DROWNING PREVENTION DAY 2024 – JULY 25
·
The United
Nations (UN)’s World Drowning Prevention Day is
annually observed across the globe on 25
July to highlight the tragic impact of drowning on families and
communities and promote life-saving prevention measures.
·
The theme of World Drowning Prevention
Day 2024 is “Anyone can
drown, no one should”.
·
Under this
theme, the World Health Organization (WHO)
has chosen the slogan “Seconds can save a life”.
·
The WHO was established on 7 April 1948, as a specialized agency of the UN to improve
international public health.

12. KARGIL VIJAY DIWAS –
JULY 26, 2024
·
Kargil Vijay Diwas or Kargil Victory
Day is annually observed across India on 26 July to mark the victory of the Indian Army over Pakistan
in the Kargil War of 1999.
·
The Day also
pays tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of the Indian Armed Forces during the
Kargil War.
·
During the
25th Kargil Vijay Diwas, Prime Minister (PM) NarendraModi, virtually witnessed the first blast of the Shinkun La Tunnel Project in
Ladakh, which will be the world’s highest tunnel when completed.
·
During the
Kargil War, the Indian Army carried out an offensive armed action named Operation VIJAY to evict Pakistani
intruders from the Indian Territory.
