1.         WORLD’S WEALTHIEST CITIES REPORT 2024

·           According to the 2024 World’s Wealthiest Cities Report published by international wealth migration specialists Henley & Partners, New York City, New York, the United States of America (USA) has retained its title as the Wealthiest City in the World.

·           California’s The Bay Area (USA) is ranked 2nd followed by Tokyo (Japan); Singapore(Singapore) and London(The United Kingdom-UK) at 3rd, 4th and 5th position respectively.

·           Mumbai (Maharashtra) (24th) and Delhi (37th) were the only Indian cities featured among the top 50
With 11 cities in the Top 50, the USA has emerged as the World’s richest country.

·           China dominates the 2024 list. 5 cities in mainland China, along with Hong Kong (Special Administrative Region-SAR) and Taipei are featured among the top 50.

·           Shenzhen (China) has emerged as the fastest-growing city in terms of number of millionaires and saw an increase of 140% in the last 10 years.

 

2.         INDIA RECEIVED OVER USD 111 BILLION IN REMITTANCES IN 2022

·           United Nations (UN) agency, International Organization for Migration(IOM) released the report titled “World Migration Report 2024”.

·           The report revealed that India received over USD111 billion in remittances in 2022.

·           Thus, India becomes the 1st country to surpass the USD 100 billion mark.

·           The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is the top destination for Indian migrants, according to a report by a United Nations agency. 

·           International remittances surged by 650%, from USD 128 billion to USD 831 billion between 2000 and 2022.

·           Top 5 countries which received highest remittances in 2022: India, Mexico, China, The Philippines, France.

·           India (1st ), Pakistan(6th ) and Bangladesh(8th )are among the top 10 recipients of international remittances in the world.

·           United States of America (U.S.A.) is the largest source of destination country for international mobile students.

·           India – United Arab Emirates, India– the US, India–Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh–India were among the top 10 international country-to-country migration corridors.

3.         2024 PULITZER PRIZES

·           The Pulitzer Board announced the winners of 108th Pulitzer Prize (2024) under the categories such as: Journalism, Books, Drama and Music, and Special Citations.

·           Pulitzer Prize is highest national honor in United States of America (USA) in the field of journalism, literature, and music composition.

·           ProPublica won the 2024 Pulitzer Prize in Journalism under the Public Service category.

·           Hannah Dreier of New York Times won 2024 Pulitzer Prize in Journalism under the Investigative

·           David E. Hoffman of the Washington Post won 2024 Pulitzer Prize in Journalism under the Editorial Writing category.

·           Photography Staff of Reuter won the 2024 Pulitzer Prize in Journalism under the Breaking News Photography

 

4.         WORLD ASTHMA DAY 2024 – MAY 7

·           World Asthma Day (WAD) is annually observed across the globe on the 1st Tuesday of May to raise awareness of Asthma, one of the most common chronic non-communicable diseases (NCD), affecting both children and adults.

·           The annual observance of WAD is led by Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA).

·           The theme of WAD 2024 is “Asthma Education Empowers”.

·           The 1st World Asthma Day was observed by GINA in 1998.

·           The day was observed in conjunction with the first World Asthma Meeting in Barcelona, Spain which witnessed the participation of over 35 countries.

·           GINA was launched in 1993 in collaboration with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health, United States of America (USA), and WHO.

5.         INDIA OVERTAKES JAPAN TO BECOME WORLD’S 3RD LARGEST SOLAR POWER GENERATOR 

·           As per the report “Global Electricity Review 2024” by the international energy analytics agency Ember, in 2023, India surpassed Japan to become the world’s third-largest producer of solar power, generating 113 Terawatt-hour (TWh) compared to Japan’s 110 Terawatt-hour (TWh).

·           This marked India’s significant rise from being 9th in solar energy deployment in 2015.

·           India’s solar generation increased 17 times from 0.5% in 2015 to reaching 5.8% in 2023. India’s wind generation increased slightly from 2.5% to 4.2% in 2023.

·           India witnessed the world’s fourth-largest increase in solar generation in 2023, with a growth of 18 terawatt hours (TWh), following China (+156 TWh), the United States (+33 TWh), and Brazil (+22 TWh).

·           In terms of installed power capacity, India ranked 5th globally at 73 Gigawatts (GW), while Japan stood at third place with 83 GW.

·           China led global solar production in 2023, producing 584 Terawatt-hour (TWh), surpassing the combined output of the United States, Japan, Germany, and India.

·           Also, India was the third largest power sector emitter globally, emitting 1,404 million tonnes of CO2 from electricity generation, behind China (5,491 MtCO2) and the US (1,570 MtCO2).

·           India is one of the few countries planning to triple renewable capacity by 2030, aiming for 509 GW.

 

6.         INDIA CONTRIBUTES USD 500,000 TO U.N. TRUST FUND FOR COUNTER-TERRORISM

·           India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) Ambassador RuchiraKamboj presented a voluntary financial contribution of USD 500,000 to the UN Trust Fund for Counter-Terrorism, and handed over to Under Secretary General, United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) Vladimir Voronkov.

·           With this latest contribution, India’s cumulative financial support to the trust fund reaches USD 2.55 million.

·           Qatar tops the UN Trust Fund for Counter-Terrorism with USD 139,530,303.

·           The Fund was established in 2009 by the Secretary-General and transferred to UNOCT in 2017 following General Assembly resolution 71/291.

7.         SEBI EXTENDS SETTLEMENT SCHEME PERIOD TILL JUN 10 IN STOCK OPTION CASES

·           SEBI has extended the settlement scheme period until June 10, 2024 for entities involved in reversal trades in the stock options segment on BSE in 2014 and 2015.

·           Originally scheduled to end on May 10, 2024 the scheme provides an opportunity for settlement to entities facing adjudication proceedings.

·           The ISO Settlement Scheme 2024 targets entities involved in trade reversals on BSE (formerly Bombay Stock Exchange) between April 1, 2014, and September 30, 2015, with pending adjudication proceedings.

·           After the scheme period ends, actions under securities laws will continue against entities not participating in settlement.

 

8.         WORLD RED CROSS AND RED CRESCENT DAY 2024 – MAY 8

·           World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is annually observed across the globe on 8th May to honour and thank the volunteers and staff of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

·           The theme of World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day 2024 is “Keeping Humanity Alive”.

·           During the 14th International Conference of the Red Cross held in London, England, in 1938, the delegates decided to observe 8th May of every year as the International Red Cross Day.

9.         RUSSIAN PRIME MINISTER

·           Russian President Vladimir Putin has reappointed Mikhail Mishustin as the Prime Minister of Russia, subject to approval by the lower house of parliament, the State Duma.

·           This decision comes as part of the legal procedure following Putin’s inauguration for his fifth presidential term.

 

10.      CHAD’S PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

·           Mahamat Idris Deby Itno, Chad’s military dictator and interim president, has secured victory in the presidential election

·           This provisional result, announced by the National Election Management Agency is poised to extend Deby’s rule for another six years.

 

11.      FREE HOSPITAL CARE UNDER PM-JAY TOUCHES RS 86,000 CRORE

           Free hospitalisation benefits worth Rs 86,000 crore have been provided to beneficiaries of the PradhanMantri Jan ArogyaYojana (PM-JAY) since the scheme was rolled out in September 2018.

           More than 65 million people have so far benefited from the PMJAY scheme which offers Rs 5,00,000-a year free health cover. 

           The scheme was made available for 107 million poor households in the country, roughly covering the bottom 40% of the population.

 

12.      ATANU CHAKRABORTY REAPPOINTED AS HDFC BANK CHAIRMAN

           The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the reappointment of AtanuChakraborty as the Part-Time Chairman of HDFC Bank for a period of 3 years

·           Chakraborty served the Government of India for 35 years as a member of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in the Gujarat cadre.

 

13.      OFFICIAL ANTHEM FOR ICC MEN’S T20 WORLD CUP 2024,

·           The International Cricket Council (ICC) released the official anthem for the Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. 

·           The anthem titled ‘Out Of This World’ features Grammy award winning artist Sean Paul and Soca superstar Kes.

·           The ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 will be held in which 20 international teams will play 55 matches from June 1-29 in the West Indies and USA.

·           The anthem, produced by Michael "Tano" Montano, was launched with a music video.

 

14.      DIVIDEND FROM RBI IN FY25 EXPECTED THE GOVERNMENT TO YIELD RS 75,000-85,000 CRORE

·           The central government is likely to receive a dividend of Rs 75,000-85,000 crore from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in the current financial year.

·           This is slightly lower than the Rs 87,416 crore surplus transfer in FY24.

·           The Centre has budgeted Rs 1.02 trillion in surplus transfer from the RBI and public sector banks (PSBs) for FY25, but has not specified the breakup.

16.      SCOTLAND'S FIRST MINISTER

·           Scottish National Party (SNP) veteran John Swinney was elected as its new leader and is set to replace HumzaYousaf as Scotland’s first minister after he emerged as the sole contender in the contest to pick a new premier.

·           He has served as an ally to former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, holding the position of her deputy for a record 9 years.

 

17.      SUNITA WILLIAMS TO PILOT BOEING'S STARLINER ON HER 3RD SPACE MISSION

·           The National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA’s) Boeing Crew Flight Test will launch Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams and her colleague Butch Wilmore on their third space mission to the International Space Station (ISS).

·           The astronauts will launch aboard Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft atop an Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral’s Space Launch Complex-41

·           This mission marks the first crewed trip on Boeing's Starliner spacecraft and its third orbital flight test overall.

·           Previous orbital flight tests, Boe-OFT and Boe-OFT 2, were unmanned and conducted in 2019 and 2022, respectively.

 

18.      PM VISHWAKARMA: WOMEN OUTSHINE MEN IN SKILL TRAINING

·           Under the PradhanMantri VishwakarmaYojana, women surpassed men in participating in skills training, with over 95 per cent of them choosing tailoring as their preferred trade.

·           Introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 17, 2023, the initiative has provided training to 350,000 individuals so far. 

·           Among them, 240,000 (68.76 per cent) are women, and 110,000 (31.3 per cent) are men.

·           The states with the most beneficiaries under the programme are Karnataka (83,067), Gujarat (56,221), Jammu and Kashmir (55,856),

·           PM Vishwakarma is implemented as a Central Sector Scheme, fully funded by the Government of India, with an initial outlay of Rs 13,000 crore.

·           The Scheme will be conjointly implemented by the  Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MoMSME),  the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) and the Department of Financial Services (DFS), Ministry of Finance (MoF), Government of India.

 

19.      CHINESE NEW AMBASSADOR TO INDIA

·           Chinese President Xi Jinping has appointed XuFeihong as the new Ambassador to India after a delay of 18 months.

·           Xu, previously serving as Ambassador to Afghanistan and Romania

·           He will succeed veteran Chinese diplomat Sun Weidong who completed his tenure in India in October 2022.

 

20.      ISL 2024  MUMBAI CITY FC BEAT MOHUN BAGAN SUPER GIANT

·           Mumbai City FC beat Mohun Bagan Super Giant 3-1 at the Salt Lake Stadium to emerge as the Indian Super League (ISL) 2023-24 Cup Winners at the final in Kolkata. 

·           Indian Super League (ISL) 2023-24 was 10th season of ISL.

21.      DHARAMSHALA CRICKET STADIUM GETS INDIA’S FIRST ‘HYBRID PITCH’

·           India’s first-ever “hybrid pitch” was unveiled at the picturesque Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) stadium in Dharamshala

22.      RBI  INSTRUCTS NBFCS TO MAINTAIN THE RS 20,000 LIMIT FOR CASH DISBURSEMENT IN GOLD LOANS

·           The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued a caution to nonbanking finance companies (NBFCs) that offer gold loans, warning them against exceeding the Rs 20,000 limit for cash loan disbursal.

·           The advisory refers to Section 269 SS of the Income Tax Act, 1961, which prohibits any individual from receiving more than Rs 20,000 as a loan amount in cash.

·           Reason for Cap: This move by the RBI aims to discourage cash transactions, promoting transparency and traceability in financial transactions.

 

23.      INFOSYS RECEIVES ISO 42001:2023 CERTIFICATION

·           Infosys announced that it has been certified with ISO 42001:2023, the world’s first international standard on AI management systems, by TUV India (part of TUV Nord Group)

·           Infosys is among the first IT services companies globally to have earned the certification for implementing an Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS) framework that fosters responsible AI practices

 

24.      EXERCISE GAGAN STRIKE-II IN PUNJAB

·           The Indian Army’s Kharga Corps, part of the Army’s Western Command, concluded a 3-day joint military exercise Gagan Strike-II with the Indian Air Force (IAF) in Punjab.
