1.       EX AGNI DAMAN-23: CIVIL – MILITARY AGENCIES COMBAT FIRE

·         A mutual firefighting Exercise named ‘Agni Daman-23’ was conducted to raise awareness and train the personnel of both civil and military agencies on firefighting at 29 Field Ammunition Depot, Dehu Road under the aegis of Headquarter Southern Command, Pune (Maharashtra).

·         The extremely high-temperature conditions in and around Pune have severely increased the fire hazard factor. So, in order to overcome this disastrous situation this exercise was held which utilized the capabilities of combined forces of all agencies including military and civil to combat fire together.

 

2.       COMMITTEE TO RESTRUCTURE 94-YEARS-OLD ICAR

·         The Union Government has formed an 11-member high-level committee under the chairmanship of Sanjay Garg  to restructure the 94-year-old Indian Council of Agricultural Research ICAR, which was established in 1929

·         .Earlier, the union government constituted the committees under Dr MS Swaminathan and Dr RA Mashlekar. However, their recommendation was never implemented.

·         ICAR  is an autonomous organisation under the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.

 

3.       TRANSACTIONS BY CA & CS UNDER THE AMBIT OF MONEY LAUNDERING LAW

·         the Union Ministry of Finance notified changes in the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, widening its ambit to include the financial transactions facilitated by the Chartered Accountants(CA), Company Secretaries(CS), and Cost and Works Accountants (CWA).

·         Following the changes, the financial transitions by these professionals including operating and managing their client firms and trusts, and buying and selling business entities will be now covered under the anti-money laundering law.

 

4.       GLOBAL REPORT ON FOOD CRISES (GRFC) 2023’,

·         The flagship publication of the Global Network Against Food Crises (GNAFC), ‘Global Report on Food Crises (GRFC) 2023’, estimates that nearly 258 million people (i.e. 22.7% of the analysed population) in 58 food-crisis countries/territories were faced acute food insecurity at crisis or worse levels (IPC/CH Phase 3-5) in 2022, up from 193 million people in 53 countries and territories in 2021.

·         253 million people were in Stressed in 41 countries/territories with IPC/CH analyses in 2022.

·         Around 35 million people were in Emergency in 39 countries/territories.

·         European Union, World Food Programme (WFP) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) launched the Global Network Against Food Crises at the 2016 World Humanitarian Summit (WHS).

 

5.       PRET INITIATIVE BY WHO

·         WHO (World Health Organisation) launched a new initiative called PRET (Preparedness and Resilience for Emerging Threats) to ensure the world is prepared for future outbreaks like the Covid-19 pandemic.

·         PERT is a Call to Action to accelerate preparedness for pandemics and emerging threats globally.

·         The PRET Initiative’s first module focuses on respiratory pathogens, including influenza, coronaviruses, and respiratory syncytial virus.

·         The PRET initiative was announced at the Global Meeting for Future Respiratory Pathogen Pandemics held on 24-26 April 2023 in Geneva, Switzerland.

 

6.       FORBES’ WORLD’S 10 HIGHEST-PAID ATHLETES 2023

·         According to Forbes’ World’s 10 Highest-Paid Athletes 2023, Footballer Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) has become the highest-paid athlete in the world in 2023 after he moved to Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr in January 2023, after his exit from Manchester United, nearly doubling his annual salary to an estimated USD 75 million.

·         He topped the list with a total earning of USD 136 million – USD 46 million on-field and USD 90 million off-field.

·         Paris-Saint Germain (PSG)’s forward Lionel Messi (Argentina) stands 2nd with a total earning of USD 130 million.

·         24 years old PSG player and France National football team captain Kylian Mbappé is ranked 3rd with a total earning of USD 120 million.

 

7.       NASA HERC 2023 COMPETITION

·         Three student teams from India won the NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) Human Exploration Rover Challenge (HERC) 2023 competition which was held near NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, in Huntsville, Alabama, USA (United States of America).

·         Project Review Award: College/University Division: Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, Rajasthan.

·         ii.Social Media Award:High School Division: Young Tinker Educational Foundation, Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

·         College/University Division: KIET Group of Institutions, Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.

 

8.       LEIPZIG BOOK AWARD FOR EUROPEAN UNDERSTANDING

·         Maria Stepanova, a Jewish author from Russia now living in exile in Germany, has been awarded the Leipzig Book Award for European Understanding 2023 for her volume of poetry entitled “Madchen ohne Kleider“ (Girls Without Clothes).

·         She received the award on 26th April 2023, during the opening ceremony of the 30th Leipzig Book Fair at the Gewandhaus Leipzig in Germany.

·         The Leipzig Book Prize for European Understanding has been awarded annually since 1994 and is one of the most important literary prizes in Germany.

 

9.       CAROL SHIELDS PRIZE FOR FICTION

·         Fatimah Asghar, a South Asian American poet and screenwriter, won the inaugural Carol Shields Prize for Fiction for her debut novelWhen We Were Sisters”, published by One World/Random House.

·         The Carol Shields Prize for Fiction is a new English-language literary award to celebrate creativity and excellence in fiction by women and non-binary writers in Canada and the United States of America.

·         The prize was named after American-Canadian novelist Carol Ann Shields and is managed by the Carol Shields Prize Foundation.

 

10.    DOHA DIAMOND LEAGUE 2023

·         India’s javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal in Javelin Throw men’s event of the Doha Diamond League 2023 (officially known as Wanda Diamond League) by registering a distance of 88.67 metres(m).

·         Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic finished second with a best of 88.63 m and reigning world javelin champion Anderson Peters of Grenada finished 3rd with a best of 85.88 m.

·         The Doha Diamond League was held at Suhaim bin Hamad Stadium in Doha, Qatar

·         Neeraj Chopra became the 1st Indian athlete to be crowned Diamond League champion by winning the grand final in Zurich, Switzerland in September 2022.

·         Initiated in 2010, Diamond League is an annual series of athletic meets, comprising track and field events organised by Monaco-headquartered World Athletics. It was established to replace the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) Golden League, which was held since 1998. The meets are held in different cities across the globe.

 

11.    FIDE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 2023

·         Chinese chess grandmaster Ding Liren (32 years old) has become the 17th world chess champion and China’s 1st Male World Chess Champion by defeating Russia’s Ian Nepomniachtchi at the FIDE World Chess Championship 2023 in Astana, Kazakhstan. Ding Liren

·         Ding succeeds five-time champion and World’s No 1. Magnus Carlsen of Norway, who held the title since 2013.

·         With Ding’s win, China now holds the World Chess Champion title for both men and women.

·         Ju Wenjun is the current Women’s World Chess Champion.

 

12.    BOOK “SACHIN@50 – CELEBRATING A MAESTRO”

·         Boria Majumdar, a renowned sports historian and TV show host, released his new book titled “Sachin@50 – Celebrating a Maestro”, on the occasion of an Indian former international cricketer Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar’s 50th birthday (24th April 2023).

·         The book covers Sachin Tendulkar’s journey to success, beginning with his teenage debut, when he rose to fame after his bloodied nose incident in Pakistan in 1989.

 

13.    INTERNATIONAL LEOPARD DAY 2023 – MAY 3

·         International Leopard Day is annually observed across the globe on May 3 to raise global awareness about the leopards (Panthera pardus) and their plight as well as the risks that leopard populations face.

·         The day is observed to make people aware of the nocturnal big cat that is mostly found in the Indian subcontinent, Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and Southern Russia.
