1. DEFENCE MINISTRY APPOINTS PANEL TO EXPEDITE CAPITAL ACQUISITION
FOR ARMED FORCES MODERNISATION
i. Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman
has constituted a 13-member advisory committee to monitor and expedite capital
acquisition projects for the modernisation of the armed forces. The committee
will be headed by Vinay Sheel Oberoi, former secretary in the government.
ii. Under the terms of reference of the
committee, the Ministry has to undertake an independent review and check the
status of ongoing critical projects worth more than Rs 500 cr.
2. PM MODI 3 NATION VISIT- LEAVES FOR PALESTINE
i. PM Narendra Modi left for his 3-nation
visit to Palestine, the United Arab Emirates and Oman.
ii. This is the first ever visit by an
Indian Prime Minister to Palestine, and PM Modi's second visit to UAE and first
to Oman.
iii. PM would be addressing the 6th
World Government Summit being held in Dubai, UAE at which India has been
extended 'Guest of Honour' status.
3. INDIA RANKS 44TH IN GLOBAL INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY INDEX, US TOPS
i. India has increased “substantially”
its score in the International Intellectual Property Index, ranking 44th among
50 nations, according to the US Chambers of Commerce report. Last year, India
ranked 43rd out of 45 countries in the Index.
ii. The top 3 countries on the list
are- The USA, The United Kingdom and Sweden.
iii. India’s overall score has
increased substantially from 25% in the 5th edition of the Index to 30% in the
6th edition, according to the annual report prepared by the Global Innovation Policy
Centre of the US Chambers of Commerce.
4. SOUTH CENTRAL RAILWAY BECOMES 1ST RAIL ZONE WITH 100% LED
LIGHTING AT STATIONS
i. The South Central Railway has become
the first railway zone in the country to complete 100% LED lighting at all the
stations under its jurisdiction.
ii. It has attained the status of
becoming the first zone in the Indian Railways to complete 100% LED lighting in
all the 733 stations under its jurisdiction.
5. NHAI TO START 'PAY AS YOU USE' PILOT PROJECT ON DELHI-MUMBAI
NATIONAL HIGHWAYS
i. The National Highways Authority of
India will start a pilot project called "pay as you use" on the
Delhi-Mumbai Highway to study and implement the ability of the system in the
country.
ii. The project to be run for one year
involves implementing a satellite-based electronic toll collection system
running on GPS/GSM technology for around 500 commercial vehicles on the Delhi-Mumbai
National Highway.
6. CCI SLAPS RS 136 CR FINE ON GOOGLE FOR UNFAIR BUSINESS PRACTICES
i. The Competition Commission of India
has imposed a fine of around Rs. 136 cr on search engine major Google for
unfair business practices in the Indian market for online search.
ii. The penalty is being imposed on
Google for infringing anti-trust conduct. It was alleged that Google is
indulging in abuse of dominant position in the market for online search through
practices leading to search bias and search manipulation, among others.
7. RK SINGH LAUNCHES ASH TRACK MOBILE APP FOR BETTER MANAGEMENT OF
FLYAASH
i. Union Minister of State (I/C) for
Power and New & Renewable Energy, Shri R.K Singh, launched a Web-based
monitoring System and a Fly Ash mobile application named ASH TRACK.
ii. These platforms will enable better
management of the ash produced by thermal power plants by providing an
interface between fly ash producers (Thermal Power Plants) and potential ash
users such as – road contractors, cement plants etc.
8. PEPSICO CEO INDRA NOOYI BECOMES ICC'S 1ST INDEPENDENT FEMALE
DIRECTOR
i. PepsiCo Chairman and CEO Indra Nooyi
has been appointed as the International Cricket Council's first-ever
independent female director. Nooyi will join the cricket body in June 2018 for
a 2-year term.
ii. The introduction of an Independent
Director, who must be female, was approved by the ICC in June 2017, aimed at
improving the global governance of the sport.
9. INDUSIND BANK LAUNCHES NEW SONIC IDENTITY, A MUSICAL LOGO
i. IndusInd Bank launched its new Sonic
Identity, which is essentially a musical logo called 'MOGO', as part of its branding initiatives.
ii. The objective for associating to a
sonic identity is building the Bank's brand imagery with the strategic use of
music and sound for brand experiences and audience connection.
10. KHELO INDIA SCHOOL GAMES CONCLUDES; HARYANA TOPS MEDAL TALLY
i. The 1st Khelo India School Games
concluded in New Delhi with sports powerhouse Haryana topped the overall medal
tally. The state won 102 medals which include 38 gold and 26 silver.
ii. Maharashtra with 110 medals (36 of
them gold) finished second while Delhi with 94 medals came third. Sports
Minister, Col Rajyavardhan Rathore presented the top State Haryana with the
glittering trophy.
11. HARDAYAL PRASAD APPOINTED SBI CARD MD & CEO
i. SBI Card, the country's
second-largest credit card issuer, has appointed Hardayal Prasad as new
Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer of the company.
ii. He has replaced Vijay Jasuja.
