1. COUNCIL OF SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH SIGNS
AGREEMENT WITH THE METAL INDUSTRIES DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE), ETHIOPIA
i. The
Council of Scientific and Industrial Research has signed an agreement with
Europe-based Metal Industries Development Institute to implement a twinning
programme.
ii. The
twinning is one of the largest programs between a CSIR institute and a foreign entity.
The deal aims to bring opportunities for CSIR’s future collaborations with
African organisations.
iii. CSIR
will enhance the capacity and capability of MIDI to enable it to contribute
more efficiently towards the development of Metals and Engineering sectors in
Ethiopia.
iv. Saini has
also invited the industry to collaborate with CSIR and its counterparts in
respective African countries to deploy the technology for benefitting the
masses in the region.
2. WORLD’S LARGEST FLOATING SOLAR FARM LAUNCHED IN CHINA
i. China has
launched world’s largest floating solar farm consisting 160000 panels. It is a
waterborne plant and is expected to generate 40 megawatts at one time and could
supply electricity for over 15,000 homes.
ii. The plant
has been built in Huainan city, Anhui Province, by Sungrow Power Supply, a
Chinese company specialized in renewable energy.
iii. The cool
air near the surface of the water would help reduce the heat generated from the
solar panels and lower the risk of battery malfunction.
3. INDIA EMERGES AS 7TH LARGEST EXPORTER OF AGRI-PRODUCTS
GLOBALLY – COMMERCE SECRETARY
i. At 22nd
Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority Annual
Award Function in New Delhi, Commerce Secretary Mrs Rita Teaotia, mentioned that
India has emerged as 7th largest exporter of agri-products globally.
ii. Total
merchandise exports during 2016-17 stood at $276.28 billion out of which agri
exports comprised of $33.38 billion, representing 08% of the total exports.
iii. APEDA
presented 82 awards to Indian Agro and Processed Food exporters for
distinguished export services during years 2014-15 and 2015-16.The awards were
presented in 3 categories viz. Diamond (2 awards), Gold (33 awards) Silver (29
awards) and Bronze (18 awards).
4. INDIAN GIRL PADMALAYA NANDA BAGS LITTLE MISS UNIVERSE
INTERNET 2017 CROWN AT LITTLE MISS UNIVERSE IN GEORGIA
i. A 12 year
old Padmalaya Nanda from Odisha has created history by becoming the youngest
girl to bag the “Little Miss Universe Internet 2017” and “Little Miss Actress”
crowns at the Little Miss Universe 2017.
ii. The
Little Miss Universe Internet 2017 held at port city of Batumi in Georgia.
Padmalaya Nanda studies in the 8th standard at a school in Cuttack, Odisha.
iii. This is
the 1st time that a 12 young Indian girl has won this beauty pageant title. She
will now participate in the “Little Miss World 2017” competition that will be
held at Greece.
iv. The
silver crown was won by Thailand.
4. LEWIS HAMILTON WINS IN CANADA FOR 6TH TIME
i. Lewis
Hamiltonwon the Canadian Grand Prix for the 6th time.Lewis Hamilton won against
Sebastian Vettel’s overall championship.
ii. It was
Hamilton’s 3rd victory of the season and also his third in a row. It was the
3-time champion’s sixth victory at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
iii. It was
the Mercedes team’s first one-two finish of the year.
5. VETERAN TELUGU POET, WRITER C NARAYANA REDDY PASSES AWAY
i. Legendary
Telugu poet and writer C Narayana Reddy passed away in Hyderabad.
ii. He had
several publications to his credit which include poems, lyrical dramas, songs,
ballets, essays, travelogues, ghazals – original and in translation – and
literary criticism.
iii. He was
passionate about preserving and popularising Telugu language and culture,
especially among the young generation. His works have been regarded as
trend-setters.
iv. He was
honoured with Padma Shri in 1977 and Padma Bhushan in 1992 by Government of
India.
v. He had
received the Jnanpith Award for the year 1988.
6. WORLD DAY AGAINST CHILD LABOUR: JUNE 12, 2017
i. World Day
against Child Labour 2017 is observed globally on 12th of June.
ii. The World
Day against Child Labour theme was In conflicts and disasters, protect children
from child labour.
iii. The Day
focuses on the impact of conflicts and disasters on child labour.
iv. The
International Labour Organization has launched the World Day against Child
Labour in 2002.
v. It aims to
focus attention on the global extent of child labour and the action and efforts
needed to eliminate it.
