1. KOLKATA TO GET INDIA’S FIRST UNDERWATER METRO
i. Kolkata will launch an underwater Metro which will pass through tunnels several feet under the Hooghly.
ii. The 1st underwater transportation tunnel of India has been constructed 30 meters below riverbed.
iii. It will be connecting 2 main terminals: Sealdah and Howrah – each of which has a footfall of about 10-12 lakh passengers per day.
iv. It is just a few meters away from the famous Howrah Bridge, built in the last century to connect Howrah and Kolkata.


2. 22ND EDITION OF EUROPEAN UNION FILM FESTIVAL BEGINS
i. The 22nd European Union Film Festival has opened at Siri Fort auditorium New Delhi on 10th June with the screening of Estonian film Cherry Tobacco.
ii. The 5-day event is being organized by the Delegation of the EU and Embassies of EU Members.
iii. It is in collaboration with Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Tomasz Kozlowski, ambassador of European Union to India said it is believed that cinema has a universal appeal and helps to bring people and cultures together.
iv. The festival includes the story of inner struggle of a father, and his complicated relationship with his son; the coming of age of a 17-year-old girl, who has to take decisions that even a grown up woman will find difficult to make.

3. IOB LAUNCHES RETAIL MART IN THIRUVANANTHAPURAM
i. Indian Overseas Bank, the Lead Bank for Thiruvananthapuram district, has launched the Retail Mart, a retail lending concept, in Kerala’s capital city.
ii. The exclusive facility that handles retail products has started functioning at the main branch. The Retail Mart has been designed with an aim to complete all the pre-release formalities at the customer’s doorstep.
iii. The bank will also sanction quality retail loans at a competitive rate of interest with a minimum turnaround time.

4. SOUMITRA CHATTERJEE TO GET FRANCE’S LEGION OF HONOUR
i. Veteran Bengali film actor Soumitra Chatterjee has been conferred with the highest French civilian honour, the Legion d’Honneur.
ii. Ambassador of France to India Alexandre Ziegler will be in Kolkata to present the honour.
iii. Exactly 30 years ago, Bengali filmmaker Satyajit Ray was awarded the Legion of Honor by then French President Francois Mitterrand in 1987.

5. 2017 FRENCH OPEN – OVERVIEW
i. 116th edition of the French Open tennis tournament took place at Stade Roland Garros, Paris, France from 28th May to 11th June 2017.
ii. Rafael Nadal won Men’s Singles title by defeating Stan Wawrinka and Jelena Ostapenko won Women’s Singles title by Simona Halep.
iii. Men’s Doubles won by Ryan Harrison & Michael Venus and Women’s Doubles by Bethanie Mattek-Sands & Lucie Safarova.
iv. Gabriela Dabrowski & Rohan Bopanna won Mixed Doubles by defeating Anna-Lena Grönefeld & Robert Farah.

6. KUTWAL WINS GOLD AT WORLD CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP FOR DIFFERENTLY-ABLED
i. Shashikant Kutwal has won the gold medal at the 17th World Individual Chess Championship for differently-abled.
ii. Shashikant Kutwal is a railway employee with Pune Division. The World Chess Championship held in Slovakia.

7. FEDERATION CUP NATIONAL SENIOR ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS HELD IN PUNJAB
i. 21st Federation Cup National Senior Athletics Championships was held from 1st – 4th June in Patiala, Punjab.
ii. The event was organized by Athletics Federation of India with support from Punjab Athletics Association and Sports Authority of India.
iii. The championship provided an opportunity to Indian track and field athletes to qualify for the Asian Athletics Championships which is scheduled to be held in Bhubaneswar in July 2017.

8. RAMESH’S BOOK ON THE NATURALIST IN INDIRA GANDHI LAUNCHED
i. The book “Indira Gandhi – A life in Nature” was launched by Congress president Sonia Gandhi at the Indira Gandhi Memorial.
ii. The former Union minister Jairam Ramesh, who has authored the book published by Simon & Schuster, presented the 1st copy of the book to the Congress President.
iii. The book showcases how Indira Gandhi led India to the path of conservation and made it a priority of economic development. The book brings out some of the unpublished works sourced through archives and personal sources material.
iv. Ramesh also highlighted how the former PM brought the Project Lion 1st and then Project Tiger for conservation of the big cats.
