WOMEN SAFETY MOBILE APP ‘HIMMAT' LAUNCHED
Ø Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh launched India's first
integrated mobile application for women safety called ‘Himmat', in the presence
of Delhi's Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung.
Ø The ‘Himmat' application will strengthen women safety. Person
who will download this smart phone-based application can alert the police in
the hour of need by either shaking the phone or pressing the power button
twice.
Ø It is directly linked to the Police Control Room and they will
get an indication immediately
5) STAMPEDE
KILLS 35 IN SHANGHAI ON NEW YEAR'S EVE
Ø 35 people were killed and 42 injured in a stampede at the China’s
city.
Ø The celebrations went astray at the Chenyi Square of Shanghai's
popular riverfront Bund area when people reportedly rushed to collect coupons resembling
US Dollars.

REJECTS PALESTINIAN STATEHOOD BID
Ø The
UN Security Council rejected a Palestinian resolution calling for an Israeli
withdrawal from the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem and the establishment
of a Palestinian state by late 2017.
Ø The
resolution called for a peace deal within 12 months.
Ø There
were eight votes in favour, including France, Russia and China, two against and
five abstentions, among them Britain. Australia joined the US in voting against
the measure.

SPLITS CMD POST NAMES NEW CHIEFS FOR 4
PUBLIC SECTOR BANKS
Ø In
a significant decision the government today split the post of chairman and
managing director (CMD) of public sector banks seeking to create a new
management structure.
Ø The
government said it has decided to now separate the post of chairman and MD
& CEO.
Ø Apart
from the SBI, in the new appointments of PSBs, the chairman will be a part-time
Board member who would preside over the Board meetings and will not be an
executive chairman.
Ø As
part of the new process, the government appointed four new CEOs of banks.

Koteeswaran has been appointed as MD and CEO of Indian Overseas Bank

will head Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC)).
